My Study in Electrical Engineering

Engineers are viewed as the backbone of modern society. The innovation and the
creativity that drives our society forward are inspired by the teachings of engineering,
whether it is transporting on a bus or making a phone call, the work of an engineer is
knowledgeable. Engineers satisfy both themselves and humanity which is the reason for my
passion in engineering. There are some majors in engineering such as mechanical
engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, chemical engineering, etc. One of my
favourite that I’m picking it right now is electrical engineering. Since high school, I really
enjoyed at studying physic and math, especially in various electrical topics. Even I usually
got great mark on those subjects. Three years ago, when I entered Gadjah Mada University, I
wanted to apply my knowledge in physic and math to help people in making many
innovations. Then, I thought that electrical engineering departement could help me to achieve
that goals. So, I decided to choose electrical engineering as my major. Now, I’m really
grateful for making that choice!

Although I’m happy to study in electrical engineering at Gadjah Mada University, for
me, life in college is tougher than life in high school. First year study is not so easy for me.
At that time, I needed to adapt to college environment. Including in society and learning
style. One of most difficult topic to learn in my first year is fundamentals of electrical
engineering. To make it more difficult, the lecturer is so strict in teaching that topic. Even
once I got scoled by him because I couldn’t answer his question about the topic. But, the
toughness in my first year didn’t make me sad because I got a lot of friends. They would
support and help me in any occasion. At the same time, I also decided to join college student
organization and many events. I felt that life in college would be so flat and boring if I didn’t
actively work in student organization and events. Joining those activities made me got closer
with many lecturers and known to many people in my department. At the end, I was trusted
to be leader in human resource development division at student organization and I was asked
to be lecturer and laboratory assistant in various subjects. I spent my second and third year in
college with those activities and also intense studying. For me, there must be no time wasted
when I study in electrical engineering, student activities and academic studying are important.
So, I couldn’t choose one over another. As a result, I worked very hard to maintain my good
GPA while joining student activities. I really loved my struggle at that time.
Now, I’m on my last year in college. I’m no longer participating in many student
activites anymore. In final year, student in electrical engineering must pick one of five
submajors. There are power system engineering, telecommunication engineering, control
engineering, computer engineering, and biomedic engineering. I’m picking
telecommunication engineering because I like communication system especially in wireless
technology and I think right now communication research is massively developed by many
top universities in the world. So, it must be very important for humans to develop
communication technology at these days as the need of it is growing. Currently, I focus my
effort to publish some papers and of course, one of those papers is intended to be my final
project in college. The first paper I ever created in college is about wireless power transfer
along with my lectrurer. Wireless power transfer is actively researched these days. Industries
like automotive and telecommunication need that kind of technology. That paper is submitted
to CITEE International Conference 2019 by my lecturer in last July but unfortunately I
wasn’t able to presenting it because I was in Bali to fulfill Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN). Right
now, I’m doing another paper for my final project about cognitive radio. Again, my lecturer
asked me to help him do this research together. It’s so challenging for me and every week I
need to report my progress to my lecturer. But I love my work and research. It makes me
think that even we are living in modern era, there are so many undiscovered things. Those
things are meant to be discovered to improve the quality of human’s life. As engineer, I’m so
excited to be the part of it. I want to be someone that pioneering innovation in modern
society.
