This is enough children to replace the populations of London, Paris and Sydney
all at the same time!
What is the use?
When you read a statement like the one
mentioned above you may be tempted to just
throw in the towel and walk away. There are just
too many. Stop right there! you can make a
difference! When you pick up your
needles and turn yarn into a square,
not only are you creating a gift that
will go towards warming a poor or
sick child you are preforming a simple
but one of the most beautiful acts in
this world, the act of down to earth
love.
Not everyone can hop on a plane and
give their time and talents to these in
children in person but that does not
mean we are helpless when it comes
to helping these children. Knitting
squares sewn into blankets is your way of putting a
protective arm around one of these children. It
truly does make a difference in a little one who no
longer has parents to wrap their protective arms
around them.
YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
What Can I do to Help out?
There are four things you can do.
1.Knit, Knit, and Knit or crochet lots of Squares!
There is nothing on television anyway. What
better use of your spare time then to contribute
to a growing swell of wonderful
contributers from over 33
countries around the world.
2.You can also help joining other
knitters on the Square circle forum
found at www.knit-a-square.com .
This forum is abuzz with ideas on
how to help the children further.
3.Spread the word. Know anyone
else who knits? Introduce them to
the knit a square charity.You can
finds loads of information on
www.knit-a-square.com .
4.Involved with a children’s club? Think about
sharing this project with them. The kids will learn
a new craft and can help make a difference in the
life of someone their own age. Again see the

how to introduce this project to kids.
HOW DO I START?
To Knit an 8” (20 cm) square.
Grab some yarn scraps (Worsted Weight or
#4 medium yarn only please) and a pair of
5.5 mm or 6 mm knitting needles. Your
tension should be approximately 16
stitches to 4” (10 cm). Cast on 32-36
stitches and knit every row until the
square measures 8”/20 cm. Cast off . Be
sure to leave at least a one metre length
of yarn for a tail. This is for the assembly
of the squares which will be done in
Africa.
To Crochet an 8” (20 cm) Square
Grab some yarn scraps (Worsted Weight
or #4 medium yarn only please)
Hook Size: J/10 6.00mm
Gauge: 11.5 sts x 5.5 rows = 4"
Abbreviations: Ch(s)-chain(s), dc-double
crochet, rep-repeat.
Row 1. Ch 24, dc in 3rd ch from hook &
each ch to end (23 sts including chs), turn.
Row 2. Ch 2 (counts as 1 dc here and
throughout), dc in each dc across, turn.
Rep last row 11 times. Finish off, leave 2
yard (2 metre) tail for sewing up.
These are just basic squares but don’t let
your creativity end there. You are only
limited to your own imagination. These
squares are a great excuse to try out a new
