THE ORIGINS OF JAZZ

Jazz is America's contribution to popular music. In

contrast to Classical music, which follows formal Euro-
pean traditions, Jazz is spontaneous and free-form. It
bubbles with energy, expressing the moods interests
and emotions of the people. Brash, unhibited, exciting,
it has a modern sound.

In the 1920's Jazz sounded like America. And so it

does today. The origins of this music are as interesting
as the music itself. Jazz was invented by American Negroes, were brought to the
Southern states as slaves. They were sold to plantation owners and forced to
work long hours in the cotton and tobacco fields and as these people settled to
their new life, they made up work songs and singing them made the hard work go
faster.

The work was hard and life was short and when one of them died his friends and
relatives formed a procession to carry the body to the cemetery. In New Orleans,
a band often accompanied the procession .On the way to the ceme- tery the band
played slow, solemn music suited to the occasion. But on the way home the
mood changed, spirits lifted, and everybody was happy. Death had removed one
of their numbers, but the livings were glad to alive The band played happy music,
improvising on both the harmony and the melody of the tunes presented at the
funeral. This music made every one want to dance. was an early form of jazz. But
there were other in ences, too.

THE TWIN QUESTION

Mark and Gerald are identical twins, mirror images of each other; they also share many similarities in
lifestyle. Mark hasn't even been married and Gerald hasn't either. Mark is a firefighter, and so is Gerald,
Mark likes hunting, fishing, going to the beach, eating Chinese food, and watching John Wayne movies,
Gerald does too.
These similarities might not be unusual in identical twins, except for one fact: Mark and Gerald were
separated when they were five days old and grew up in different families. Neither Mark nor Gerald knew
that they had a twin brother. The two men found each other accidentally when they were thirty-one, and
they discovered their almost identical lifestyles at that time.
Average people are fascinated by twins like Mark and Gerald, so are serious researchers. Identical
twins share the same genes; therefore they offer researchers the chance to study the effect of genetic
inheritance on disease, length of life and personality. However identical twins who are separated at birth
and grow up in different environments offer researchers a way to investigate the age-old question:
Which has more effect on our lives heredity (the genes we receive from our parents) or environment (the
social influences in our childhood). Some starting coincidences have turned up in recent studies of
identical twins separated at birth. Perhaps the most astonishing twins of all are the Springer and Lewis
brothers, who were adopted by different families soon after they were born. The Springer family named
their adopted son Jim and so did the Lewis family. When the two Jims met for the first time as forty-year-
old adults, they discovered that their similarities went way beyond their identical names and looks. Jim
Lewis had worked as a gas station attendant and a law enforcement agent, so had Jim Springer Lewis
chewed his fingernails when he was nervous, and Springer did too. Both men had dogs. Lewis had
named his dog Toy; so had Springer. And believe it or not, Lewis married a woman named Betty. So had
Springer.
Do our genes really determine our names, the people we marry, the jobs we choose, even the pets we
adopt? Clearly heredity isn't the only force that governs our lives and neither is environment. The lives of
twins separated at birth suggest that we have a lot to learn about the complex role these two powerful
forces play in our lives.
