Good Day Everyone, in this video we will talk about the field of Engineering Management.

Our objective today is to analyze the different functions of an engineer, identify the different
classifications of firms according to the degree of engineering jobs performed, define the meaning of
engineering management, and compare project management from engineering management.

Let us first define who and what is an engineer, according to Wikipedia, Engineers, as practicioners of
engineering, are professionals who invent, design, analyze, build and test machines, complex systems,
structures, gadgets and materials to fulfill functional objectives and requirements while considering the
limitations imposed by practicality, regulation, safety and cost.

In the Philippine setting, in order to become an engineer, you must have at least, a four or five year degree
program in various fields of engineering such as Civil Engineering, Electrical, Electronics, Computer,
Industrial, Mechanical, and others. After becoming as such, some requires licenure exams from the
Philippine Regulations Comission after graduating from your specific field.

That means, after you graduate you still have to go undergo various tests and practice, to become a full-
fledged engineers. In my opinion, graduating from college doesn’t mean that you will also stop from
learning. In the field of engineering, there are still a lot to learn even just for the specific field you choose.

In the field of engineering management, engineers are expected to perform a variety of task depending
on one owns specialization and job. For example, In the different branches of engineering, such as civil
engineering, there are still sub-branches like structural, construction engineering, water resource,
geotechnical, and transportation. Each of these sub-branches is a specialize field in civil engineering. Each
have their own responsibility and functions. Even other fields have also their own functions like in the
field of mechanical, electrical, and electronics. Therefore it is important to the engineer that he knows
what is expected of him so that he may be able to do his functions effectively.

His next concern will be to identify the skills that is required but which he does not have. As new engineers
engaged in their respective field. There are still many unknowns even though they are already
knowledgeable. Because of this, they need to identify what is lacking and make way to improve their skills
to solve specific problems. Especially to beginning engineers who needs to a constant improvement to be
able to adapt from school-to-work knowledge.

A brief history to Engineering, In the 6000 to 3000BC, the stone bladed axe which was a very useful tool,
and the irrigation system used to promote crop growing. In 3000 to 600BC, the pyramids of Egypt was
made, from 600BC to AD400, the road building was introduced by the Romans. In 100AD to 1600AD, the
paper and gunpoweder was produce by the Chinese. In 1601AD to 1799AD, steam engine was made and
the industrial era begun. In the modern times, we are already at the stage of innovation and production
of new technology to make life easier.

Because of this advancement in technology, problems also occurs. Through this, engineers will still always
have a room to help the society. Some of the problems are introduce in this presentation such as growing
population means more demand for food production, therefore, it is always an opportunity for the
engineer to show off his skill on how to innovate things to give solution to this problem.

Engineers, are also engaged in various functions in different industry such as: Research, Design and
Development, Testing, Manufacturing, Construction, Sales, Consulting, Government, Teaching, and
Management. Once you become an engineer, you will be going to choose what functions are you going
to consider.

Going to the classification of firms according to engineering functions. Organizations may be classified in
accordance to the degree of its engineering jobs performed: The first one is the first level where it is
classified with minimal engineering jobs like retailing firms. On the second level, transportation companies
are considered since not all personnel are considered as engineers. The level three example is a
construction firm in which most function requires the specific field and knowledge of an engineer.

Engineering Management is defined as “the activity combining technical knowledge with the ability to
organize and coordinate worker power, materials, machinery, and money.” We have to take note that
when the engineer is assigned to supervise the work of even a few people, he is already engaged in the
first phase of engineering management. In large companies, the top position that an engineer manager
may hope to occupy is the general manager or presidency. In fact, when he scales the management ladder,
he finds that the higher he goes up, the less technical activities he performs, and the more management
task he accepts.

When I was studying management in engineer, I encountered two different types which is the project
manager and the engineering manager. Among the two, the latter is define as the one that supervises the
progress of a specific company project, such as a construction project or an IT development project. The
scale in which he lead could be small or large. And once the project is complete, the project manager will
move on to the next one.

On the other hand, the engineer manager integrates management and engineering for leadership in
technical, scientific, or industrial field. The engineering manager has the authority to issue promotions or
terminations, or to coordinate with human resources directly. An engineering manager may also oversee
research and development or a specific project, but unlike that of a project manager, his position is
permanent.

To summarize the difference between the two, in terms of position, they are the same however, in terms
of duration, the project manager is temporary while the engineering manager is permanent. Also, the
project manager is dependent as to the duration of a certain project while the latter is managing a specific
business unit within an organization
