The Green Book

The Philosophy of Self

[A Reconstruction]

Teachings from the “Master” through George Wright

as reconstructed from Theon Wright, The Open Door

Prefatory Note
The present document gathers the communicated scripts presented in Theon Wright, The Open
Door: A Case History of Automatic Writing (New York: John Day Co., 1970). This book is, in its
own description, “the narrative of a sustained series of experiments, carried on by three generations
of the same family, seeking to establish a form of communication between the living and the dead.”
[p.10] At the book’s core are a series of more than thirty spirit communications received by George
Williams Wright and his wife Nella Wright during the period between late 1900 and late 1911.
Following George Wright’s death, a final message from the same source was received by his son
Stowell Wright in 1960, nearly a half-century later.
The nature of these communications is what makes The Open Door so remarkable. They are, quite
possibly, the most metaphysically significant set of spirit communications to have ever been
received. Bearing close similarity to the metaphysical vision of Advaita Vedanta as well as the
Perennial Philosophy generally (cf., for example, Aldous Huxley, The Perennial Philosophy), it
coordinates this understanding with a cosmological vision that encompasses both physical and
discarnate realities. In his introduction to Swami Prabhavananda and Christopher Isherwood’s
translation of the Bhagavad Gita, Huxley summarizes the Perennial Philosophy as follows:
At the core of the Perennial Philosophy we find four fundamental doctrines.
First: the phenomenal world of matter and of individualized consciousness—the world of
things and animals and men and even gods—is the manifestation of a Divine Ground within
which all partial realities have their being, and apart from which they would be non-existent.
Second: human beings are capable not merely of knowing about the Divine Ground by in-
ference; they can also realize its existence by a direct intuition, superior to discursive reasoning.
This immediate knowledge unites the knower with that which is known.
Third: man possesses a double nature, a phenomenal ego and an eternal Self, which is the inner
man, the spirit, the spark of divinity within the soul. It is possible for a man, if he so desires,
to identify himself with the spirit and therefore with the Divine Ground, which is of the same
or like nature with the spirit.
Fourth: man’s life on earth has only one end and purpose: to identify himself with his eternal
Self and so to come to unitive knowledge of the Divine Ground.

1
The overarching teaching contained in the communicated scripts may be readily judged by the
reader to concur with this summary articulation of the Perennial Philosophy in all essential re-
spects.
The method of communication was via automatic writing [cf. pp.320-32], a method established as
in principle veracious through such evidential examples as the Cross-Correspondences—arguably
the finest sustained demonstration of posthumous human survival we have—as well as Geraldine
Cummins’ Swan on a Black Sea and Grace Rosher’s Beyond the Horizon.
The source of these communications is altogether more problematic to determine. Referred to as
the “Master Mind,” or simply “the Master,” the best notion as to the source’s identity may be
gleaned from the communicated scripts themselves. On the one hand, the discarnate “Master”
appears to have been a once-incarnate human with a particular individuality, as noted in the
following script:
You may still wonder as to my identity. I have told you that I am not personal in the sense that
you mean, except while manifesting. Take that to mean that at one time I was individualized
as a human ego and followed the Path until I attained the ultimate of that process. My role is
to help others along the path I have trod…for each Master has his pupils, and each has a slightly
different process of training and instruction for them to pass through….You wish to know why
I have come to you rather than any other Master, and I will say that I am drawn to you because
your individualization is along lines similar to my own. [pp.185-6]
On the other hand, the “Master-Mind” is described as nothing less than that Intelligence that was
embodied by Christ:
In the Christian Era or Dispensation, which was the external indication of one such great
spiritual wave in its revivifying influence, the Master-Mind was embodied with the man, Jesus,
who as a man typified the ideal of a soul. But such a Jesus as the common people of today
worship as a God never existed and never could exist. [p.147]
The Intelligence that is manifesting through this medium tonight is one of the departments of
the Spiritual Wave in its expression on the earth plane; it is called by the medium’s band the
Master-Mind, by other mediums Jesus, the Christ. It embodied Christ, and it works today
through many mediums all over the world to user in the New Dispensation, or the New
Philosophy. [pp.183-4]
As yet another complicating factor, the “Master” often refers to “Masters” in the plural in the
parting blessings of the scripts in question, suggesting, of course, that the title is not singular or
unique. An insight into this conundrum comes from a statement by another discarnate personality:
As to your question about Jesus, Stowell, know that advanced souls who have learned to see
the Underlying Reality, or God, may go on to become teachers on this plane, and those most
advanced are called Masters. There are many, each with certain areas of responsibility, not
only for this earth and its people. Jesus was a Master who returned to earth as a man, born in
the usual manner, to bring a higher teaching of One-ness, of God and of Man as an entity,
separate as to experience and knowledge, but One as to essence. [p.291]
Further insight may be gleaned from another statement of the “Master”:

2
Now I, who am individualized, yet not personal in the sense you mean, can manifest as a
personal spirit, and thus some of you will look upon me in the one light and some in another.
[p.184]
The nature of the “Master”, it would seem, can only be grasped in the context of the non-dual
metaphysical vision communicated, for the “Master” may perhaps be best understood as a once-
humanly incarnate, discarnate spirit who has achieved At-one-ment, or Self-realization, and has
taken on, within the context of that realization, certain teaching functions. As a Master among
other such Masters, the “Master” may be understood as an individualized being, but as the “Master-
Mind”, the “Master”—through At-one-ment—is not other than the Ultimate Reality. Taken most
essentially, the “Master” might be grasped in human terms as a discarnate realized sage.
As an additional point of interest regarding the “individuality” of the “Master”, the being in
question was never referred to by or made use of a personal name, but rather make use of a symbol-
referent, approximated in the present document as ֆ:
During the twelve years in which George and Nella Wright received messages from the source
they referred to as the “Master Mind,” or simply “the Master,” there were no messages signed
by a name. In each case the source was identified by the symbol [see p.122 for reproduction],
except for a few instances in which a continuous message seemed to have been carried through
several sessions, with the symbol appearing at the end of the last message in the series. [p.121]
The purpose of these communications is perhaps presented most clearly in the following statement:
You are studying a system of philosophy that is used by many of the egos that are far advanced
along the path… [p.185]
The aim of the path mentioned is specified in another statement of the “Master”:
I have promised to give you more knowledge and other lessons, as you are prepared for them,
and be assured that I will keep my word; but you must not be impatient. You are on the Path
toward Higher Life, which is a realization of Self in All. This leads to complete realization and
enables you to attain your ultimate, so that you will be in a position similar to mine. [p.186]
So, the communications form a body of instruction in a system of philosophy intended to lead to
Self-realization. Again, in similar human terms, the communications may be understood as the
teachings of a discarnate realized sage instructing others in the process of spiritual maturation to
become realized sages in turn.
The communicated scripts of the “Master” were gathered by George Wright into what he termed
the Green Book, the name “derived from the color of the green leather cover in which the written
digest of the messages of the Master had been bound.” [p.51] George Wright began work on organ-
izing the Green Book in June 1911:
During this period, in which we had little to do except wait, George began to assemble the
material he had written over the years, for the purpose of putting all the lessons of the Master
into a single bound book that might be distributed to many people. [pp.226-7]
He organized the Green Book along subject lines, while no doubt eliding specifically personal
material that had been received:
Since the lessons were for the most part given in response to certain specific questions, or
needs, expressed by George and Nella Wright, some effort to correlate and organize the

3
material for general application is needed. Our father provided that in the digest, which we
have called the Green Book, which divides the messages into twelve chapters, or lessons. In
synthesizing the messages, this method will be followed; that is, the messages will not be
discussed in the order they were received but rather in the sequence of the Green Book. [p.337]
However, to the best of our knowledge, the Green Book was never published or even privately
distributed. Rather, it appears that only a single copy, for private family use, was ever prepared.
The Green Book is the book behind The Open Door, and is consulted extensively by George
Wright’s son Theon Wright in the third section of that work, but the Green Book is not presented
in toto in The Open Door and the reader is left hanging, unable to consult this key source. What
the reader of The Open Door is granted is the communicated scripts of the “Master”. An immediate
question is whether The Open Door reproduces all of these scripts. Theon Wright, in his discussion
of the first script, notes that it,
…set forth the basic philosophy contained in a score or more subsequent messages received
from the same source during the dozen years that followed.…these seemed to provide a
“master plan” of the Universe, the later ones amplifying the first long message. [p.123]
In fact, in the text of The Open Door, there are thirty-four communicated scripts associated with
the “Master”—well over the “score or more” specified above—thirty-three of which were
communicated through George Wright. Of these, thirty are complete scripts, the remaining three
being fragments or portions thereof. Thirty of the scripts are in the second, historical section of the
book, between pp.119-293. However, three additional scripts—one complete script and two
fragments—appear in the final, analytical section and find no mention in the book previously. As
they are specifically mentioned by Theon Wright as being included in the Green Book, this
suggests that there may be other possible scripts apart from those included in the second section
of The Open Door that may also be included in the Green Book. We have no way of knowing from
The Open Door whether this is the case.
Even if we assume we have all of the scripts that comprise the Green Book—and it seems
reasonable to assume that if we do not have all then we have nearly so—the structure that George
Wright gave to the text has—in the absence of the Green Book itself—been lost. We know from
The Open Door that the Green Book was divided into twelve chapters arrange by topic. We may
infer that seven of these topical chapters were based upon the following “leading truths” com-
municated in a late script:
The Truth of the Underlying Reality.
The Truth of the reality of Appearance.
The Truth of the Inherent Law of Necessity.
The Truth of the nonexistence of Evil.
The Truth of the possibility of At-one-ment, or Self-realization.
The Truth of Universal Brotherhood.
The Truth of the persistence of Individuality. [pp.232-3]
However, we have no listing even of chapter headings to establish what the other five chapters
may have been. Of course, a topical arrangement of the general themes of the collective com-
municated scripts could well be attempted, but these would by no means necessarily align with the
original arrangement of the Green Book. The best we can do, in the present circumstances, is to
focus upon the content of the communicated scripts and present them together, as found in more
or less temporally received sequence in The Open Door. It is this that we present in what follows.

4
The Green Book: Introduction
We must go beneath the surface of Reality back of expression if we wish to come in touch with
All, and to do this it is necessary to find some starting point that is common to the human race. We
cannot find this common ground in our environment, which sets us one against the other in
contrasting conditions, nor in our personality, which is largely an outgrowth of our diversified
experiences. So we turn at last to that which lies within us, confident that it also forms the found-
ation of every other human life and is in itself integral in its essence even though it manifests itself
as different individual members of the human race. It is that which lies beyond the threshold of
our consciousness and forms the vast continent of Life, on the hither shores of which we are but
pioneers.
The reaching up or down, or in or out to Reality, of which we are but manifestations, in the cause
of all religions and philosophies, and the diversity of results that we observe is due to the various
directions in which this reaching acts. All cults and systems of the past and present have limited
their activity to the one direction, and so have failed to realize the greater field that lies outside the
narrow angle of their vision… [Thus] we have developed institutions that foster intolerance,
bigotry, superstition and oppression.
There has always been a tendency to separate this material world from that which we call spiritual,
and to regard them as diametrical opposites; so we have two points of view, the material and the
spiritual—that which looks on physical matter as the only positive fact in the universe, and that
which spurns the material as unworthy of thought, striving to reach upward to that which is con-
sidered “higher.”
Now the true spiritual impulse is as old as the race itself, and dates from the time when prehistoric
man first recognized within himself the elements of something eternal and indestructible. The
earliest type of religion was that which had its foundation in the faith or hope that this eternal
Something retained its individuality and consciousness after the change called death had been
wrought upon the body.
But in common with all else in the universe this primitive relation, which had its origin in the
Underlying Reality, was subject to the Law of Periodicity. The rise and fall, the ebb and flow,
mark the ever-swinging vibrations of the Universal Pendulum, and all things move in conformity
with this law of change which comprises involution and evolution and work through the medium
of cause and effect to bring about the progressive development of the universal structure.

The Green Book: Communicated Scripts
My Children, Back of and beyond the Universe you know, permeating and transcending it, there
exists an Underlying Reality, the nature of which you cannot conceive or express in terms of your
ordinary everyday experiences or language.
It is a Cosmic Consciousness that is aware of its own Being. It is intelligent, universal, integral in
its essence and in its manifestation. It is coherent, indivisible, and a complete Whole that expresses
its potentialities in a diversity of individual manifestations.
The realization of your One-ness with this Cosmic Consciousness constitutes a Higher Selfhood,
an extension of your individualized ego beyond the physical limitations of the universe in which
you live, and a contact with and awareness of the Underlying Reality.
This Underlying Reality is in constant flux and evolution. It creates by manifesting itself and ex-
pressing its potentialities under a category of conditions that give rise to the phenomenal universe,
which thus becomes the Appearance, or concrete projection of the Underlying Reality in terms of
Space, Time, Form, Motion, Matter and Force.
The Appearance, or manifestational universe, is thus the dynamic phase of the Underlying Reality
or Cosmic Consciousness.
Since it is the concrete expression of an unfolding and evolving Reality, it must exist in varying
degrees and planes.
The modes of manifestation, Space, Time, Form, Motion, Matter and Force, are not entities in
themselves. They are not limitations in the sense of being obstructions or interferences. They are
rather the vehicles or instrumentalities through the agency of which the abstract becomes concrete,
the Reality becomes Appearance, the Cosmic Consciousness individualizes and gives expression
to its inherent potentialities.
The dynamic, or manifestational phase of Cosmic Consciousness operates to create the phen-
omenal universe, or the Appearance which is the projection under the conditions of Space, Time,
Form, Motion, Matter and Force of that which exists a priori in the Underlying Reality.
The compulsion or urge to manifest and express itself is an inherent necessity of the Cosmic
Consciousness. The awareness of Being becomes an awareness of Becoming. The process of
manifestation results in the fulfillment and Self-realization through experience.
The various stages and degrees of Self-realization marking the progress of the Underlying Reality
toward the goal of ultimate fulfillment are represented by different planes of development, from
the crudest, densest physical expression through graduated and overlapping levels of con-
sciousness to the highest spiritual individualizations.
On these higher levels consciousness has so expanded and merged as a result of accumulated ex-
perience that it becomes less individualized or differentiated and approaches unification with the
Universal Self, the Cosmic Consciousness, or the Underlying Reality.
The physical universe in which you live, and of which you are aware through your senses,
comprises the lower, denser levels of manifestation. This is the universe, or “world”, of primary
self-consciousness. It is the plane of farthest divergence or differentiation among entities. Here
you are aware of Self as distinct and separate—the Ego Sense. You contact your environment by

6
means of the physical senses which interpret to the inner consciousness the modes of manifestation
which surround you and in which you function.
And in your functioning on this plane and these levels of manifestations, you gain wider and wider
experience, express more and more the potentialities inherent in your particular individualizations
of the Underlying Reality, and thus by your specialized activity, you enrich the Whole and
participate in its unfoldment.
Just below the level of the physical plane there is a sub-material world in which Cosmic Con-
sciousness first individualizes in elemental degrees of manifestation under conditions that are
difficult for you to comprehend, since they involve manipulation of space-time, matter-form, and
force-motion in an extrasensory environment and in dimensions outside the scope of your
experience. You have no mechanism to respond to stimuli arising in the sub-universe and so are
unconscious of it.
Similarly, there exists just above the level of the plane on which you function another “world” of
consciousness and manifestations. This is the Psychic Universe, the next step in your progress and
unfoldment. It is not wholly separate and distinct from the world in which you live; rather, it is
superimposed upon the physical world, interpenetrating it and overlapping, so that the boundaries
are not fixed and impassable. It corresponds to a new and advanced degree of evolution, providing
another opportunity for further experience. Its modes of manifestation parallel those of this world,
but like the sub-material plane, it is keyed to rates of vibration and dimensions which your senses
cannot ordinarily perceive. You do not have the general physical mechanism to respond to stimuli
on or from that level.
There is, however, a common dimension or factor that exists and forms a connection on all planes.
It is the continuous chain or thread that runs through all manifestations and beyond manifestations.
It is Consciousness—the Underlying Reality behind all Appearance, the real Self within.
This connection provides a doorway by means of which we enter other planes of the phenomenal
universe and function on them, and by which entities from those other planes can reach you in this
physical world. Consciousness crosses all seeming barriers and if you know how to utilize it you
can pass between worlds as simply and as readily as you utilize motion in space to pass from one
city to another here in your ordinary space-time world.

____________

My Children, Strive to learn the lessons of life as they present themselves and profit by each
opportunity to glimpse the great truths that underlie experience. Try to understand the meaning
and value of each experience as it comes to you, and in your learning, which should always be
growth toward the Higher Truth and Law, endeavor to read aright the language of your failures.
Learn first to recognize the Reality that underlies Appearance. The Real, however, is not what you
see with eyes, feel with hands, or hear with ears. Your senses only recognize what lies in the field
of the Appearance. The Real must be grasped directly by the Consciousness within and com-
prehended as a greater Consciousness, of which it is only a part.

7
Learn also to regard the Appearance as the manifestation of the Real to your senses, not as an
illusion or false in any degree. It is the projection of the Real into the field of your senses, although
the primary Cause that expresses itself thus can be felt by the Soul as a separate and dissimilar
entity.
Learn that everything you touch through the senses or through the power of reasoning is a phase
or form or aspect of the One Underlying Reality expressing itself in the realm of Appearance. And
further learn that nothing exists in itself, or for itself, or by itself; for there is no such thing as
isolation. Separateness is impossible. Then in loving a part you love the Whole; in desiring a part
you desire the Whole; in comprehending a part you comprehend the Whole; and in despising a
part you despise the Whole.
Learn lastly that this Whole which you see reflected in the universe about you is not only that of
which you are a part, it is YOU. The Reality that expresses itself as a universe is that which IS,
and that which is is SELF.

____________

My Children, Tonight I will tell you of the three chief fetters to development. These fetters are
Fear, Doubt and Hate.
Fear of the world, fear of others, fear of Self; one who does not know fear is half free from the
hindrance of development.
The most potent cause of fear lies in the ego. It is the individual’s instinctive effort to be separate
from the rest of the universe, not realizing that the highest form of separateness is At-One-ment.
When the universe becomes “I” then the highest form of Self-hood is realized and the part becomes
the Whole, and the individual becomes identical with the Higher Consciousness. Thus the ego is
unable to find any justification for its existence until it realizes this truth; and until it does, fear
will always be a potent factor in retarding progress and unfoldment.
Fear is the shrinking of the ego from all that is objective, a terror lest in some way its individuality
be lost or merged into the universe, when in reality, such merging would not be a loss but a vast
gain.
So have no fear; cast off this fetter of unfoldment. With confidence in Self and in the Higher Self
of which you are a part, and with Hope in your heart, strike off the fetter of Fear that holds you in
bondage.
[3rd communication (first of three), unsigned, pp.138-9]
____________

Doubt is the second fetter that holds one back from the full measure of joy of living. Doubt of the
Self, doubt of the rightness of all that is, doubt of the ultimate freedom from limitations—these are
the poisons of the mind, killing the healthy functions of intellect and sapping moral courage.
Doubt renders the wholesome food of the soul rank and bitter. It brings suffering hearts an earth-
wide weight of misery and grief.
What is this fetter of doubt?

8
It is the clinging of the mind to old ideas of right and wrong, to a belief in what is unreal and does
not exist. And if one clings to that which is not he will lose his sense of discrimination and his
power of right judgement. These faculties lost, the ego is without a guide in its course of develop-
ment; it has nothing on which to rely.
Doubt of Self is the cardinal doubt to overcome—the greatest enemy of progress and right living.
For if one doubts Self, which is that which IS, the one Reality, then indeed will he fail to see the
light when it shines upon him, fail to find the One-ness that underlies the visible expression of the
Whole, the eternal Self, the Being—which is the one and only Reality.
So when you have conquered doubt you will have attained a position from which, relying entirely
on Self, you can be at one with the entire universe, for you will recognize it only as a reflection of
yourself.
And this is Faith…a faith in Self which conquers Doubt and leads to harmony in the universe. It
is the mainspring that will drive you on in your further development until you reach the goal.
[4th communication (second of three), unsigned, pp.139-40]
____________

The whole universe is one vast and mighty tide, whose ebb and flow marks cycles as it does
seconds. And there is associated with this ebb and flow an attractive force that seems to draw
things together, while an apparently repellent force seems to drive them apart. This is one aspect
of the seemingly real that you must distinguish from Reality. In its actual nature, so-called
repulsion is only another form of attraction—the attraction that draws away toward something else.
To illustrate: If there exists a stress between two things they will be drawn together; but if a third
object exerts a stronger force upon one of the two, it will be drawn away from the other. Now this
drawing away by the force of a stronger attraction is the natural ebb or repulsion of the life cycle.
So if one would live in conformity with natural law, he must substitute a stronger love or desire
before he can free himself from the influence of something that repels him. He feels an instinct of
repulsion which you name Hate, without recognizing that it is merely drawing him away with the
force of a stronger attraction. This feeling of Hate, when not understood, is a fetter to one’s
development. For whoever feels it will follow its influence before he perceives the superior force
that is drawing him away, and without intelligently directing his actions along the higher course
of his love and desire.
So, for Hate which fills the heart with black wrath and burns the very soul in a consuming fire,
substitute Love—Love for that which is nearer to the Truth than the thing which is hated.
Let Hope strike the fetters of Fear from the mind.
Let Faith strike the fetters of Doubt from the mind.
Let Love strike the fetters of Hate from the mind.
Then you will be unhindered in your unfoldment.

9
Tonight more can be done by saying a few words relative to the dangers that lie in the path of
mediumship. When one is highly impressible there is always a chance of undesirable influences
obtruding themselves, and to overcome this danger the strongest self-assertion must be maintained.
Do not think when the Higher Forces use a human mind as an instrument through which to work,
that we want that person to be any less himself. Bear in mid the fact that Self is the fundamental
fact of the universe, and nothing that lessens one’s regard for Self has any ultimate value, either to
the person himself, to his friends, or the world at large.
The positive assertion of Selfhood is not incompatible with the most perfect self-surrender, for if
we surrender the limited idea of Self—a self held separate from all else—only to merge it into a
grander and vaster idea of Universal Selfhood, then we are One with the universe and have become
Universal Consciousness, or the Underlying Reality, or God.
When we lose the fear of the world’s opinion we gain a broader assurance of the Peace that passeth
all understanding—the peace that comes with the recognition of ourselves in all about us—the
recognition of universal brotherhood.

____________

[In response to a personal concern related to Christianity and the figure of Jesus.] My Children,
the New Dispensation that is being thrown on the earth environment by the forces that control the
development of this planetary system has been in part revealed to you, but only in part. As you are
better prepared to accept the Truths of the Higher Law, they will be given to you. Do not doubt
that what is fore-planned by the ones in control shall surely be accomplished.
There are more reasons than have been given you for masking Truth. Those to whom it is given
must grow and adapt themselves to it or else it is worse than valueless; and in order that there be
no confusion in the truths that are to be taught it is necessary to marshal the forces that have the
work in charge and prepare them for fulfilling their mission.
Even if you are filled with doubt there may still be a place for you in the field, but if you conquer
Doubt, then shall you be more fully fitted for the work of the Master. And the doubt that troubles
you is the doubt of the personality of the man you call Jesus. You doubt that he ever existed—ever
was slain on the cross to bring the world a fuller understanding of the laws of the universe and
enable those who dared to enter the search for Truth. To you I bear this message:
Each dispensation or era in the history of the universe is accomplished by the flood of spiritual life
and emotion that periodically wells up from the fountainhead. In the Christian Era or Dispensation,
which was the external indication of one such great spiritual wave in its revivifying influence, the
Master-Mind was embodied with the man, Jesus, who as a man typified the ideal of a soul. But
such a Jesus as the common people of today worship as a God never existed and never could exist.
When we say that the Nazarene is the controlling factor in this New Dispensation, we mean that
the same spiritual intelligence is acting in the world today, and pouring forth a flood of regen-
erating energy as it did in the last Dispensation through the instrumentality of the man Jesus. Jesus
is the ideal of the New Dispensation—not Jesus the man, or Jesus the God.

10
There are so many sources of error that one is very prone to be mistaken in assuming absolute and
exact truth as a basis for doctrines. So be cautious and accept only what appeals to you as
individuals. Let reason and judgement ever guide you and control you.
[7th communication, signed ֆ, pp.146-7]
____________

[In response to an encounter with two Spiritualist mediums of the “New Dispensation” who had
asserted that the “Master” was Jesus.] My Children, you have learned the lesson that I gave you
some time ago, and have distinguished the Reality that underlies Appearance. All persons do not
see the Truth as you see it, but the view they have is as true and real for them as yours is for you.
Thus it becomes necessary to conceal or mask the Truth, or part of it, in order that that which is
revealed may appeal to those who otherwise would not accept it.
Some are not able to contemplate Reality as you distinguish it, and in groping after what you have
attained they might lose what you have readily grasped. Your vision is clearer than that of the
mediums who have brought this truth to you, and you are able to see farther along the Path. If they
were told exactly what you see, they would either misunderstand it, or in striving to attain a glimpse
of it would neglect those truths which lie nearest them and along which their work lies.
And now that you have grasped a part of the explanation of what has been announced to you
through these two mediums, we will explain to you, in order to remove the last doubt from your
mind, that the wave of spiritual activity that has brought a revival of interest in spiritual things is
an emanation or product of the guiding Intelligence of this circle of development to which you
belong. It is called by members of your band the Master-Mind.
You will readily discern the similarity between the teachings given you and the teachings an-
nounced through the man, Jesus the Nazarene.
In this sense it is Jesus—not the man, nor the God that has been created by churches for worship—
but the Intelligence which manifested through Jesus, and on account of which he received the
reputation of a God.
This took place in the last Dispensation, when the last spiritual wave was originated to evolve
mankind to a condition in which they would be able to accept the Higher Truths to be announced
in the New Dispensation which is dawning today.
And now that you understand in what sense the Master is Jesus, you will more readily accept the
things that are to be given you. So, may the Peace of the Masters be with you, my children.

____________

[In response to an experience leading to disappointment and discouragement.] My Children, prove

steadfast and true, loyal always to your ideal of what is best, and you will see the trials and griefs
and sorrows through which you pass to be the helping hands that lift you to regions where the light
of inspiration and hope will guide you to a more complete unfoldment of your Higher Self.
When you have reached this stage you will realize that only for those who try to separate
themselves and their lives from the universe does sorrow in reality exist. You will see that Self is

11
the totality of all the experiences of humanity and that the so-called sin of others is your sin, their
shame your shame and their good your good. So all things will be given you if you do not seek to
separate yourself from Reality.
Then peace and hope will abide with you and the contentment that comes with a realization of the
One-ness with the Whole will seal your hearts against discord and doubt.

My Children, The problem that puzzles most of you is that of the persistence of consciousness
after death. You wonder how the attributes that you designate as “consciousness” can exist apart
from the physical universe and in this you deserve to be enlightened.
The condition that you know as consciousness is one of the personal attributes that man possesses
while passing through a human experience. It is that which measures limitations, making every-
thing finite and commensurable. Now I, who am outside of consciousness, must become conscious
whenever I take upon myself the conditions of limitations, and while manifesting through an
instrument I am personally conscious in the ordinary sense.
But in any other than the manifesting stage I am not conscious in the sense that I have defined.
There is a higher phase of consciousness which I may call the hyperconscious state; it bears the
same relation to the conscious that the infinite does to the finite. This state is what cognizes the
infinite, just as consciousness does the finite. It is the effect that persists in the universal spirit after
consciousness has been experienced.
You have wondered what we mean by the “personality.” I defined it through this medium as the
experiences and attributes acquired by the spirit in its individualization as a human being. This
personality can only exist in manifestation, or while the spirit is expressing itself—its potentialities
after the dynamic phase has been accomplished in the evolution of any particular individualization
of spirit.
The spirit, in that differentiated state, has acquired certain experiences and is the richer by just so
much. And that is the only respect in which it is differentiated; in essential attributes and functions
it is one with all other spirit. So while spirit is dynamic or manifestational it is personal and
conscious of the activity expressed as a human being; otherwise not. But as soon as the human
experience is over, this personality and consciousness cease inasmuch as they are only dynamic
attributes, or attributes of the manifestational stage. However, in their subsequent state, after a
human experience, spirit possesses the effect or result of these personal and conscious attributes,
and in addition to these effects possesses the comprehension or realization of its One-ness and of
its infinite possibilities of unfoldment. This constitutes the highest form of hyperconsciousness, or
universal Self-realization.
You ask then what becomes of the personal spirits? They exist and will always continue to exist
and preserve their differentiated personalities whenever there is spirit activity along the particular
line of their individualization. These you know as Denzil, Mary, Mabel and Margaret [spirit
communicators familiar to George Wright]. All exist whenever there is activity bringing into play
the special phase of spirit manifestation that occasioned their original human experiences.

12
I cannot act longer tonight; so I will not attempt to finish. The instrument I use is not unconscious
while in this state, but is in the realm of the hyperconscious that I have described. He is conscious
of his identity with me.

____________

My Children, the truths of the New Philosophy as applied to matters of individual opinion are
variable quantities. There is no one embodied at present who has attained to Absolute Truth, or
who has the criterion by which it can be tested.
To each of you will be revealed only that which you are best fitted by nature and environment to
assimilate, and if you understand this law there will be no necessity for discord. Discord always
arises out of the attempt to make other see the truth as you see it before they are ready for it.
As there are different degrees of knowledge, so are there different degrees of truth, different grades
or steps in the approach to the Underlying Reality. As one gets a closer glimpse of some truth, it
will appear to him in a different light, and perhaps he will not recognize it; but everything is some
reflection or shadow of the Underlying Reality, which is Being, which is what you call your
Selfhood, or Universal Consciousness, or God. So do not regard anything as false, for all things
are true in their degree.
To the Higher Intelligences who control the work of this Dispensation there is no such thing as
falsehood, for we realize the One-ness of everything; but to those who are compelled to follow our
guidance this lesson is of prime importance.
The Intelligence that is manifesting through this medium tonight is one of the departments of the
Spiritual Wave in its expression on the earth plane; it is called by the medium’s band the Master-
Mind, by other mediums Jesus, the Christ. It embodied Christ, and it works today through many
mediums all over the world to user in the New Dispensation, or the New Philosophy.
Now I, who am individualized, yet not personal in the sense you mean, can manifest as a personal
spirit, and thus some of you will look upon me in the one light and some in another.
To both of you I say, May the Peace of the Masters be with you.
[11th communication, signed ֆ, pp.183-4]
____________

[In response to a query as to whether Theosophy and the “New Philosophy” had anything in
common.] My Children, Every manifestational act of the Universal Intelligence tends toward the
accomplishment of some definite purpose. Hence it follows that there can be no duplicate
experiences and no steps can be laid down for the guidance of all.
To each one is revealed in time the means by which their ultimate purpose is attained, and to
everyone there comes a time when the realization of the purpose of existence dawns upon the soul.
These individual egos or manifestations of the Universal Mind must each accomplish the purpose
for which a particular chain of activity was set in motion, and so in each case a different process
will be used.

13
So far as you know, you have learned certain lessons that are of great importance in the
development of your individual egos; but it does not follow that every member of the human race
must accept the same facts or tread the same path.
You are studying a system of philosophy that is used by many of the egos that are far advanced
along the path, but remember that although you may find points of similarity between that religion
[Theosophy] and your own, it can hardly be expected that the resemblance should continue in
every detail. So pick out that which you can reconcile with my teachings and discard as unadapted
to your use that which is incongruous or unsuited to your purpose. There are many things which
you cannot accept or which you see in a different light, so do not try to confine yourselves to the
letter of the book, but read between the lines, for there the greatest truths are hidden.
You may wonder whether you have passed the first initiation on the True Path, and I have to say
that you passed it some time ago. You were initiated in different ways; to some the process is
wholly intellectual, to others it is emotional, while some may need actual experiences either on the
psychic or physical plane.
[12th communication (first of two), pp.184-5]
____________

You may still wonder as to my identity. I have told you that I am not personal in the sense that you
mean, except while manifesting. Take that to mean that at one time I was individualized as a human
ego and followed the Path until I attained the ultimate of that process.
My role is to help others along the path I have trod, and only such as are in a condition to accept
the truths of the New Dispensation, for each Master has his pupils, and each has a slightly different
process of training and instruction for them to pass through.
Know that I am in a great measure controlled by you. Your needs draw from me the help necessary
to enable you to pass on along the Path as you are ready to do so. Each step must be taken for
itself, and no one can act for another.
I have promised to give you more knowledge and other lessons, as you are prepared for them, and
be assured that I will keep my word; but you must not be impatient. You are on the Path toward
Higher Life, which is a realization of Self in All. This leads to complete realization and enables
you to attain your ultimate, so that you will be in a position similar to mine.
I do not know have long it will take you to finish. No one knows but yourselves, and that only
potentially. But from this point there is no turning back, no wavering, no escaping. You are driven
onward by inherent destiny which some call Karma, and you need not be afraid of failure; failure
is impossible.
You wish to know why I have come to you rather than any other Master, and I will say that I am
drawn to you because your individualization is along lines similar to my own. For the same reason,
you draw others to you and form circles of development. That is the Universal Law. Those who
need the experiences that you can give them are drawn to your environment by forces over which
they have no control. Every act, every thought, every word has its effect upon all the Universe,
and you yourselves are but reflections of the thoughts of others.

14
So the Cosmos is bound together by this mighty chain of Causation which no one can break or
alter, and for the attainment of the Ultimate all things conspire in individual environment. While
this is true of individuals, it is also true of the Universal Ego or Self.
[13th communication (second of two), signed ֆ, pp.185-6]
____________

My Children, Man is not a creature of blind circumstance or environment; no more is he a free

moral agent in the sense of possessing a will that gives him an option in life. He represents the
Law of Progress in his evolution, the change from the potential to the dynamic.
No matter what may be his environment, or the circumstances which cause and effect bring to bear
upon him, he yet will carry on the process as the only Law of his Being, in accord with the primal
and inherent soul qualities of which he is possessed. He is not only a manifestation of that Cause
which gives rise to all expression, but is a phase of the Reality which is inexpressible in any other
way. Thus he has no will of his own other than the inherent tendency to express himself—and this
is NECESSITY.
He is not a blind sport of environment, for the potentiality inheres in him, not in his surroundings,
and the necessity lies in his relation to the external, not in its relation to him.
This lesson you will have learned yourselves, that no matter what mask of personality environment
may have forced man to wear, he is the same ego, the same soul, with the same potentialities.
There are times when you think that trivialities and petty worldliness have lost to you your higher
aspirations, but this is not so. An ideal once is an ideal forever, and no matter what seeming
coarseness, vulgarity or deceit may obliterate it, there can be no end to it, for it represents the
undying principle and the divine heritage that transcends both will and circumstance to work out
the destiny and purpose of life.
You may seem to have paused in your development, and your high spiritual insight may appear
dulled by everyday work, but do not fear. This very work and seemingly vulgar environment is a
means to accomplishment of your evolution. You may learn a needed lesson by it.
Do not judge men by the mask of personality which circumstance had placed upon them. Learn
always to read the Soul beneath the mask, and learn the true character that is striving to express
itself, the Reality that underlies Appearance. This is one of the many applications of your first
lesson: To read life you must learn to apply your philosophy, to live your religion, and then only,
when you attain the power to recognize the divine relationship that underlies various personalities,
will the Peace of the Masters be with you.
[14th communication, signed ֆ, pp.187-8]
____________

My Children, Spirit is an entity that exists apart from time and space, for they are merely
phenomena of manifestation. But when the inherent potentialities of Spirits express themselves
and activity begins, then the element of time is brought into existence. It is only a facet of the
manifestational stage of Spirit, and the consciousness of time as well as space arises through the
perception of motion and activity.

15
Through all activity there runs a chain of causation, and this sequence of cause and effect is
dependent on the principle of Time, for without Time there could be no sequence… So cause and
effect are peculiar to manifestation and are inconceivable in Spirit in which all is as yet potential.
Now in thinking of the progress of Spirit, which we call Being, it is necessary to think of only
individual lines of activity, one at a time. You cannot expect to trace the course of all Spirit in its
progress as it is expressed in individual manifestations.
When we view the process of Being in the light of future unfoldment and relate the ultimate to the
process in the light of cause under the domain of Time, we call it “evolution.” When the ultimate
is looked upon as the effect of the process of Being and Becoming, or better, the manifestational
activity, we call this “involution.”
They are identical in nature, differing only in their relation to the process.
You might ask, then, what is the end of Being—the purpose of Evolution and Involution? When
we view the process as related to both ultimates, we have the broader sense of Evolution, and this
is the only way that we can answer this question. The purpose of activity lies not in the accomplish-
ment, but in the process itself. And this is the broader view of human experience; to live for the
sake of doing, not for the attaining; to live and act and think for the experience of the actions
themselves, and so attain the object of all activity and secure the harvest while sowing.
Your world is the Here and Now, your Evolution no more than the realization of what you are
doing, your Being no more than Selfhood.
[15th communication, signed ֆ, pp.194-5]
____________

My Children, Spirit is infinite and cannot be limited in Time or Space; hence it cannot be defined,
for to define a thing is to express it in terms of the boundaries that make it what it is. The Cosmos
is the expression of Spirit, and it consists of two factors: Substance and Vitality. This is what you
mean by Matter and Energy. This Substance was, a priori, only etheric in its nature, being matter
unlimited by any dimensional plane of Being. As more expression was given to its potentialities
by the Spirit manifesting itself, this Substance became dimensional, and as you understand the
term, material.
The other entity which comprises the Cosmos is Vitality, or what you call Energy. The latter term,
however, is commonly used to signify insensate force, and Vitality seems a more apt and
meaningful term.
These two factors then, by their own interaction, give rise to Form, and the custom or habit which
seems to apply to this interactivity is called Law. So Law is not an entity of itself, like Substance
and Vitality, but rather an attribute of their mutual action. Now this Etheric Substance is co-existent
with Spirit in manifestation, and inasmuch as Beginning is only a relative state, it must be eternal,
that is, limited only by the limitation of time itself. It is not infinite; only eternal.
It is also in a measure limited by four-dimensional space, possessing in addition to the three
dimensions of ordinary space the element of penetrability which renders localized manifestation
impossible.

16
In other words, Etheric Substance has extent through four dimensions but its locality is impossible.
However, when the manifestational activity becomes more complex this Etheric Substance in some
parts of its essence becomes localized, and so limited to three-dimensional activity—and as such
we call it Matter. So Matter is not Energy or Vitality, but the twin sister of Vitality, both being
fundamental facts of the Cosmos and, as you understand it, the universe of space and time with
which you are familiar.
This latter universe is what is meant by ‘the Word made Flesh’ in esoteric writings. With that state
which precedes the inception of the Cosmos you have nothing whatever to do; at best all
hypotheses must be purely speculative. On the three-dimensional plane of the material universe,
Form is the first manifestation of activity. Substance and Vitality are permanent, but Form is
evanescent and impermanent. As Form springs into a sense of objective relations, this gives rise
to the idea of separateness and identity. So esoteric writers have said that the illusion of Form must
be overcome, meaning only that the Appearance must be distinguished from Reality, of which it
is a manifestation. Form is transient, but it is not an illusion; it expresses the inherent attributes of
the Spirit, as interpreted through the medium of Substance, with the aid of Vitality.
Later I hope to give you more along these lines, but at present you do not need as much as your
present curiosity might lead you to expect. This is not given to satisfy mere idle curiosity, for you
have passed beyond that stage, but to make clear to you some of the difficulties that lie in your
path.
Now I will go, praying that the Peace that knows no Fear will abide with you both.
[16th communication, signed ֆ, pp.201-2]
____________

My Children, To him who, seeking Truth, yet holds himself apart from contact with trivial and
common things of life, there shall be given little light that illumines the realities and brings into
comprehension the true meaning of life.
To the gazer who ever looks to the heights for the complete realization of the ideal, the veil shall
ever hide and the mists obscure his vision.
But to the one who shall turn his gaze upon the facts of life that lie all about him, and with tender
sympathy and loving heart shall strive to read the meaning of little things—to him shall be given
the power to draw aside the curtain, to penetrate the mists and behold the beauty and the glory of
the Truth expressed in Life.
And with his power shall come wisdom, and the longing to show others the brighter light and the
purer vision. And in this learning and this teaching the Supreme Purposes of life will find ex-
pression.
So let your eyes look upon these things that surround you in your common, everyday life; let your
ears harken to the music of the working, feeling, loving, striving world; let your arms reach out
and your hands clasp those other hands that have tried again and again, through many lives, to
attain that for which all striving is the blind endeavor.
Let not your own world be cramped and narrowed to the limits of your petty personality, that
holding to the idea of a separate Self shuts out the light of development and true progress and
purpose. All activity, to be rational and effective, must be effort outward from the heart of the in-

17
dividual to the rest of the universe; must be directed toward externals rather than to the benefit of
the one acting. Thus the individual fulfills the potential attributes of the Ego, and carries forward
development in harmony with the Cosmic Law which coordinates the entire Dynamic Universe in
one perfect and harmonious Whole.
This is in some ways a rather obscure message, and the expressions do not seem to be properly
related in natural sequence. It is difficult at times to express fully what I mean, since besides
instruction I am trying to get the medium [George Wright] to respond perfectly and instantly, so
that he can do the work that I expect to follow. May the love of the Masters be upon you and
between you both, and may the life and the work be fulfilled.
[17th communication, signed ֆ, pp.203-4]
____________

My Children, Look not to the sky for inspiration, look not for it without. Do not waste your time
in the vain endeavor to attain some fabled goal that lies beyond your understanding. Know, my
Children, that which lies nearest to your hand is that which you must do. And in your seeking for
the one true Light that shall guide your path aright, look for it in your own Being, in that Infinite
Self, that soul of things of which you are merely the visible expression. Do not make the mistake
so many make, and so retard development. Do not strive for what you conceive to be beyond you
on the heights, while in seeking you discard the expression of the Underlying Reality that lies
nearest at your feet.
There will come to you in time the ability to see Self in all that you touch through the senses; then
you will realize that after all there is no up or down to the Universal Mind. What seem like
variations in the planes and degrees of spiritual unfoldment are but phases of your consciousness.
The Real is back of every manifestation, and it knows no up or down, no high or low. Learn your
lessons from the very trifles that surround your common life.
All that is good and inspiring in the universe exists within yourself in a dormant or potential
condition; wake it to life and activity. Let that which is within gain the expression for which it
strives. Do not regard anything as bad or false or mean, for everything is perfect in its place. The
normal function of a thing is its perfect function, and that which seems abnormal is but a mis-
applied expression of its uses. These functions and attributes, directed to other channels, give rise
to the phenomena we call “evil.”
All that is but a reflection of the one true Light… The ultimate of all experience is that which some
call Spirit, some God. It is Intelligence; it is Mind; it is the Real that underlies Appearance. It is
not seen with the eyes; yet without eyes the learner shall not see it. It is not heard with the ears;
yet without ears no one can hear it; it is not grasped by the senses, but by the Soul, although the
senses serve to show the Soul its manifestation.
So look with eyes that see, listen with ears that hear, touch with hands that feel; yet in seeing,
hearing and feeling recognize that it is only your perception of the objective manifestation of the
Underlying Reality by which you are the richer.
And now may the Peace of the Masters be with you, my beloved children.
[18th communication, not noted if signed, pp.207-8]
____________

18
What reaches you in your conscious life is brought into the domain of the mind through the
physical sense channels, and the result of this process is to arouse activity through which the ego,
soul or Self comes in touch with physical environment. This environment, together with the body
and brain, is an objective entity, and everything that has tangible, sensuous existence is in itself
objective to the ego, and belongs in the Objective Phase of manifestation. This entire objective
universe is the expression on the physical plane of being of the ONE REALITY which is itself
inscrutable.
On the other plane this Reality expresses itself subjectively as individualized Intelligence, or Mind;
so all Mind and all Matter are one in the Universal Reality, but the Reality is neither one nor the
other, but is an expression of that which is back of both.
[undated, unsequenced communication (fragment), not noted if signed, p.340]
____________

This message I bring to you: the Ultimate Reality is not unknowable, but can be grasped with the
naked hands of the Soul which has learned rightly to use and understand its powers. It is not
through the agency of the senses that one is able to attain this power and knowledge, nor yet is it
wholly without recourse to sensation, but rather by the proper and harmonious action of all the
faculties, both objective and subjective.
[undated, unsequenced communication (fragment), not noted if signed, p.341]
____________

My Children, There are many things that puzzle you, as I knew there would be. But you are taking
the right way to clear up difficulties. The method of outlining your questions and writing a short
discussion or review of each important point, as you understand it, will tend to arrange and classify
the entire system in your minds.
There are certain points that are troubling you, and I will try to clear up two of them. First, you
find an apparent conflict in some of the lessons regarding what you call “planes.” The reason for
this is found in the difficulty I experienced while using this medium to find just the word that
expressed the exact shade of meaning I wished to convey. In some cases I used a word in one
message in one sense, or shade of meaning; and at another time in another message I find myself
using that same word with a different application.
This is true in the case I just mentioned. In the old lesson you found the word used in the sense of
a “mode of expression.” Spirit manifests in this universe that constitutes your environment in two
ways, or phases, or planes, as subjective and objective. The subjective is the intelligent, knowing,
acting phase, and the objective is the substantive, material or physical phase. Now in a later lesson
I used it in a different sense, conforming to your present understanding of the word. In this sense,
it represents a degree of unfoldment or a cycle of development of which your present stage is one,
both in its subjective and objective phases.
Now the other factor that confused you was the nature of Force, and the distinction between Energy
and Vitality. The proper use of a word is always its best use, and in this case we will use it in its
true scientific sense, meaning Energy—that is, the active or dynamic stage exerting itself to bring
about some change in our effect upon matter. Thus when the Vital phase of Spirit reacts upon

19
Etheric Substance, under the limitations of Time and Space, it produces a material or physical
effect, such as heat, light, motion, electricity or sound. It is then called a Force. In this sense, it is
sometimes confused with the effect of such activity as heat, sound, or electricity, which are not
themselves forces.
Later I will give you more on the subject of the relation of mind, matter and force; but you have
enough to do for the present. Now my Peace I give unto you.
[19th communication, not noted if signed, pp.209-10]
____________

My Children, I told you long ago that in preserving the right attitude toward the objective world
around you, isolation is impossible. You live not for yourselves alone, and not for your own
individual development alone; rather, you live for the benefit of the entire Spirit structure. In your
relation to the physical universe you hold a place of one whose work is for all, whose actions affect
in some degree every part of the Cosmic Whole.
So seek not to separate yourself, rather cultivate that broader feeling of unity with the rest of Spirit
in both its physical and psychic expression.
And let not your life be self-centered, for to center the attention on a separate conception of your
identity and interest is to lose utterly the vast universal Self, of which you are a part. Be not selfish,
yet hold to the thought of sacredness of Self.
The relation that conceives the individual Ego as subjective, as opposed to the rest of the universe
as objective, gives rise to a feeling of possession and ownership. Those things that are intimately
related to the individual are considered as his exclusive property. Now this feeling is a necessary
condition of development, but it must be considered and regarded form this standpoint of Higher
Intelligence.
Look upon those things that are yours as being only yours to use, not to appropriate to the exclusion
of all other relations which they may bear to the rest of the universe. And use them not to advance
your own individual self, for you have none; but let their proper use tend toward the unfoldment
and expression of the Whole—the Greater Self—which is everyone.
If you learn this lesson—to regard your own life as only a factor in the universal life, your own
mind as only an expression of the Universal Mind, your body as part of the Universal Body—then
your “possessions” will be a part of the Universe most closely concerned with your part in Spirit
manifestation.
So, for the feeling of pride of possession that you may feel toward the things you have regarded as
yours, substitute a feeling of gratitude for the opportunity to use them, an appreciation and joy in
the ability to assist in the working of the entire Plan. Expand and reach out, so that your love will
affect all others. Go out into the open, on the mountains, where the limitations of a separate Being
are lost or merged in a sense of integration with all Being—a sense of perfect unity. May Peace
and Hope be ever with you.

____________

20
My Children, Learn tonight another lesson in the Book of Life. Learn to weigh and estimate the
relative value of each experience, and so temper the intensity of your attitude that you will be able
to see and feel the value of all experience. Learn the beauty of the “Moderate Way.”
He who treads the middle path in life will find the greatest joy and pleasure in his journey. Avoid
extremes that tend to warp and distort you outlook. Hold to no narrow creed or dogma, but strive
to understand the truth from every viewpoint. Do not intensely center upon any one viewpoint, lest
in your regard for one phase of expression you fail to grasp many other true and important details,
or lose some broader and more illuminating vision of Truth. Live your life here and now, valuing
each minute, hour or day for itself, for the enrichment that it brings to you. Live not for future
happiness or reward; regard life not as a task for which you are entitled to receive reward or pay
in the coin of future joy.
The attitude of one who suffers pain or sorrow and endures grief and trouble in the hope and
expectation of reward—this marks an extreme, and attitude that is to be avoided. One the other
hand, one who lives for physical pleasure only, glutting the senses with experiences of sensual
gratification, marks the other extreme. Both points of view are narrow and fail to bring full
pleasure, joy and happiness, because they limit the capacity of the soul to benefit by experience,
and lose a greater part of what they might otherwise attain.
Tread the Moderate Way, showing appreciation of all physical pleasure as well as the intellectual
and moral joys. Appreciate also the present value of pain and sorrow—as it seems to you—veiled
in the mask of Appearance. Regard rightly the relation of Cause and Effect, which project present
experiences of pleasure or pain into the future.
Thus you will find the true purpose of life to be in the living, the value of experience to be in the
experience itself, the benefit of all activity to be in the process itself rather than the result.
And then will the Peace of the Initiates be upon you constantly, and the joy and happiness and
content be yours.
[21st communication (first of two), pp.212-3]
____________

Now I will tell you what gifts the Powers bestow on those who tread aright the Moderate Way,
and gain the threshold of those Gates that mark the entrance to that Life of fuller understanding
and perfect Peace.
As you journey through the Land of Experience there bloom from time to time within you those
flowers of the Soul that mark fulfillment and the realization of the purpose of your journey. Among
the first to unfold are the three flowers of Hope, Faith and Love that mark the overcoming of the
fetters of Fear, Doubt and Hate. Then there are the mental qualities of Discernment, Discrim-
ination and Appreciation, which come from the ability to perceive rightly the Reality and to grasp
the relation between the Real and Appearance, and to accept the underlying principle that “all is
for the best.”
As the mind broadens and the Soul expands, a clearer vision characterizes the attitude of the
Initiate. The Truth he is seeking lies ever just beyond his reach, but every experience, each activity
and each ideal is at the time the closest and most real interpretation of the Truth he can grasp. One
by one the veils are pushed aside, and ever as he goes onward the light grows brighter and the

21
fleeing shadows fade. At the last this Light of Truth will render all things clear and apparent con-
tradictions will vanish in the perfect knowledge and understanding of Reality.
To those who have gained Hope, Faith, Love, Discernment, Discrimination and Appreciation,
there is added in its fullness the Gift of Power. In some degree it is given to all who are on the
Path, in the measure of their ability rightly to use it. You have had knowledge of this Power to act
upon environment and conform circumstances to your needs and demands and you have used it at
times unwisely and seemed to lose it. But its strength is ever in proportion to your actual need, and
it can be exerted now as fully and compellingly as ever, if exerted properly. But those who have
the Gift of Power in the highest degree are the ones who use it least. Knowing that you possess it,
you will hesitate long to use it, for it is an instrument that is ruthless without full and absolute
knowledge to guide it.
And now may all the Peace and Happiness, which mark the final consummation of the journey,
rest with you, my Children, in the full measure of your merit and your progress on the Moderate
Way.
[Postscript.] This has been a long session and the medium is very tired, but you must read again
and again what has been written.
[22nd communication (second of two), signed ֆ, pp.213-4]
____________

[In response to a query regarding the realism of earthly existence vs. the nonrealism of the after-
life.] My Children, In order to apply your philosophy or religion to practical everyday affairs you
must first learn to regard the trivial and unimportant details in an impersonal light. Remember that
you are one with Spirit, and that as a soul you are not limited by the conditions under which you
manifest. Learn to think of these conditions as affording the real You, the Soul, an opportunity to
express its attributes and possibilities.
Value all experience, and look ever for the good and beautiful in your environment. All things,
properly understood, are beneficent and useful. Refuse to accept the narrow viewpoint that dwells
upon seeming trials and petty worries of your material environment.
You are the masters of your destiny, the absolute rulers of circumstance. You can be happy and
fulfill the highest purpose of your Being if you rightly apply your beliefs and ideals, and really
tread the Moderate Way. Nothing has the power to affect the Soul of you, for that is not in any
sense bound by the fetters of physical existence. Rather, the Soul can use its physical instrument
to express just what it wills.
You are both enjoying privileges far beyond even the comprehension of ordinary people, even in
the higher ranks of life. Think of the many ways in which you are especially favored and fortunate,
and when you are inclined to feel discouraged, take an inventory and cast up a trial balance.
[23rd communication, unsigned, p.221]
____________

My Children, To one who treads aright the Moderate Way, free from the fetters that bind humanity,
there should be no hope of reward, no fear of punishment, no sense of duty. All his acts should

22
spring spontaneously from the inherent and potential forces that are striving for expression through
his life and activity.
The narrow laws and conventions of an undeveloped social and economic system should not
reduce either freedom of mind or body. That which man is destined to express will come to pass
through his everyday life and actions. And that is the purpose of his existence and activity—to
enrich the Whole by the effect of those definite and specific experiences through which he passes.
Such, indeed, is the purpose of every human life; but those who journey along the Moderate Way
and cross the threshold of the Initiated are the ones who realize Truth as applied to their particular
lives, and so adjust themselves to the rest of the Universe that the possibilities of expression in-
herent in them are given full power to unfold.
There is nothing that merits future reward in the living of a normal, natural life—no more than the
inanimate forces of nature are deserving of a reward. The sun shines on all the earth, the winds
blow and the tides of the sea ebb and flow for all—orderly, intelligent and beneficent—but not for
the sake of any reward. So, also, no life is deserving of punishment or condemnation. The attitude
of one who does this or that as a result of fear of doing otherwise is as undeveloped and contrary
to the higher ethical ideals as that of one who acts in expectation of reward.
The winds rise to the fury of a hurricane, the waves of the ocean overwhelm ships, lightning strikes
and earthquakes destroy cities—but these are all normal acts of natural forces and are in full accord
with the Law of Manifestation. They are the intelligent expressions of inherent attributes of the
Cosmic Intelligence.
Nor is the attitude of one who does this or that from a sense of duty an attitude of enlightenment.
The Law of Manifestation is the full and compete expression by each individual of his potential
needs, putting into concrete form through experience those causal elements that occasioned his
individual manifestation. The motive of all activity inheres in the individual himself, and his
highest purpose is realized through complete expression. The law of his relation to other
individuals is the Law of Love. Duty has no place in the evolution of an individualized entity, and
so should not enter into the process of development of the Whole.
In what you seek, be not actuated by fear of punishment or hope of reward; neither may you act
from a sense of duty or responsibility alone. In a just universe, there is only one worthy motive to
action, and that motive is Love.

____________

My Children, Long ago I taught you to distinguish the Reality from the Appearance—to look for
the Cause back of all manifestational activity. But in no sense did I bid you separate them, for there
can be no differences except of state or condition.
The Underlying Reality is that all pervading spiritual Essence that exists, of itself, without cause,
containing within itself the possibilities of all experience. In action it gives rise to the phenomenon
of Appearance, which is the corresponding entity in the physical or material plane being.
So to your ordinary senses as well as to your conscious mental processes, the phenomenon of
Appearance seems to be the Reality, when it is in fact only the representation or concrete and
specific expression of that which is back of everything, the Universal Self, the Oversoul, the

23
Spiritual Presence that runs like the thread of a wonderful design through the fabric of the Cosmic
Universe.
If, then, the material universe is this representation of a deeper and more fundamental Reality, it
is not to be regarded as something in itself, apart from this Reality, and attempting to do so, you
fall into error.
The things you see and hear and feel, all that you touch through the senses, have an actual existence
in the physical plane, and therefore they must exist, not perhaps as you now know them, but still
in reality they must exist on the other plane, as attributes, qualities or functions of the Spirit. This
is the Law of their Correspondence.
Then when you shall cease to have a material body and be [word undecipherable] [note: most
likely “unbounded” or similar] in your expression by the limitations of the physical and the
boundaries of sense, the real Ego, or Soul, will be able to perceive more directly the Reality that
lies behind all physical phenomena and to see with the eyes of the Spirit, hear with the ears of the
Spirit, and to feel and know directly, apart from ordinary sense channels of communication.
It is difficult to convey to your minds any idea of the conditions on the other plane, simply because
there are no conditions as you know them. You will see and hear and feel, only in the abstract, as
we may now, while in the physical, see and hear and touch and smell mentally. For after all, the
functions you call sensations are more psychic than physical, and serve to bring our soul in touch
with and make it cognizant of this material environment.
So, Dear Friend, be assured that in ceasing to see material things you will only gain the reality to
perceive more clearly the Reality that is before me. [Remainder of message largely undecipher-
able.]
So may Peace and Hope be with you all, my Children
[25th communication, signed ֆ, pp.225-6]
____________

My Children, In the broadest sense the psychic plane of existence lies within the realm of Sub-
stance, but the actual material of which all psychic entities consist is wholly different from the
Matter of the physical plane. Souls are psychic entities, caused by Spirit individualization and
expressing itself through the medium of Etheric Substance, or psychic plasm. The chief difference
between the psychic and the physical lies in the fundamental properties of two kinds of Matter.
These properties are due to the difference in the mode of activity of the Spirit Essence manifesting.
The most characteristic property of the psychic plasm or Substance is its penetrability. It is not
bound by the limitations of form and space, but can permeate and penetrate physical matter as light
can fill the space occupied by air. Though not confined in form, it can take on form in expressing
itself, and can occupy various parts of space without requiring any appreciable length of time for
a change of localization.
So the souls in manifestation on the psychic plane are entities as real and as positive as the physical
persons whom you meet in ordinary life. These souls have the power of exerting force in the form
of influence, and can direct it upon either mind or body. They have the power of penetrating and
occupying your bodies at the same time as the permanent soul that is you. This is what actually

24
occurs when the psychic bond of which we speak so often is formed. It is in reality the actual
merging and mingling of two souls, and establishes the highest form of rapport or unity.
This is only a hurried outline of a phase of our teaching that I want you to study and think out for
yourselves as far as possible. It will help to explain to you why the various souls in this unit hold
together in such complete rapport.
I want also to show you how you can help both Zeon and Zenea [two spirit personalities—see
pp.228-9, for further description and discussion] by forming bonds. They are two souls very high
in advancement in their own cycle, but they have not yet been able to establish full rapport and
union with the physical. Zeon will come for a short time, and I hope before long you will be able
to help him.

____________

My Children, Be not discouraged or downhearted. The work of the Master is slow, but there is no
turning back. Ever you are advancing, though you may not know or understand. Many things you
cannot rightly interpret, and in your failure to comprehend you are apt to think you are at a
standstill. But be of good cheer, for the clouds will surely clear away and show you the progress
you have made along the Path.
You have learned well the teachings and the lessons I have given you, but in some respects you
have not yet learned rightly to apply your beliefs and your knowledge to your actual conduct, or
to live them in your everyday life.
For example, you should value each experience for itself, and endeavor to feel the real and actual
joy and pleasure that should be the accompanying factor in each day’s experience. Do not look for
the seemingly disagreeable facts of life, but emphasize the pleasant ones. So adjust your viewpoint
that you will derive a maximum of happiness from every experience. Be ever patient, and strive
for Peace and Contentment that is the sure test of a right adjustment and proper outlook.
It is, after all, the big things that count for happiness, while only trifles and petty inconveniences
give rise to the feeling of discontent, worry and annoyance.
And now I will go, hoping that the Peace of the Disciples and the Joy of the Master’s helpers may
be with you, my beloved.

____________

My Children, You have moved forward very fast in the last six months, making relatively more
progress than in the two years previously. You have been eager to help us, willing to follow
instructions and obey my commands. This ready cooperation on your part has helped us greatly to
get the Unit well organized and harmoniously adjusted. Now for a while you will be allowed to
rest. The strain has been somewhat severe, and you need to relax and rest.
We are now in condition to accomplish a great deal of good in our department or line of work. The
influence and power we are able to exert by our combined activity is a factor that is bound to make
itself felt in the world’s unfoldment. The new ideals and new point of view will become more and

25
more apparent, and the tendency of the race will be toward a more rapid evolution and a broader
and more enlightened outlook.
Later on you will both be active in the work among the people you can reach, and will teach the
Truths of the New Dispensation by word of mouth, by printed lessons and discussions, and by the
force of your example in the practical application of the truths I have taught you in everyday life.
But for the present you will study and learn and assimilate, and finally freely live and express the
New Philosophy in practice. You will be the nucleus or center of this working Unit, through whom
the close communion of souls and the sympathetic harmony of purpose is made possible.
I cannot say how long you will remain here in this place, but it will not be a great while. You will
reach a point soon when circumstances will have no further power to affect your happiness. You
will—the influence of the environment will—with freedom of soul and ultimate happiness—
[Note: The writing became undecipherable at this point, and the thoughts were not consecutive, as
if the control had lost contact with the medium.]
[After a short pause.] The medium was evidently under considerable strain, for there occurred a
sort of cerebral explosion that made it impossible for me to continue, and I was oblige to leave for
a moment. I want you to be careful about the condition you are in when you come to a circle for
me to work. Now I cannot say what I intended, for I must readjust the conditions.
[After another pause.] The conditions are all right now, so I will go, wishing you Peace and
Happiness, and the joy of the Master’s Work.
[28th communication, not noted if signed, p.231]
____________

You who have so far advanced along the pathway of Higher Knowledge that the road lies open
before you—for you there can be no turning back. Opportunity allows only your progression and
the increase of your Powers. You hold in your hands the key to the door of the future, to the treasure
house of the ages… But you yourself must exercise that Power that lies in the soul.
The secret of attainment lies in working, thinking, acting and feeling with and for others, and not
in spending your powers on opposition and antagonism to others. Every effort directed against a
thing or person is partly nullified by the resistance it encounters; so make your desires constructive
and direct them intelligently in accordance with the lessons you have learned.
Your religion, your philosophy, your science all will teach you that the entire universe finds
expression in some degree through you; and you in turn bear a similar relation to all else. The
universal structure owes you the fulfillment of your desires, providing you are able properly to
demand their fulfillment. And you in turn owe the rest of the universe a corresponding benefit and
influence; and in order to exert it, you must be in harmony with all else; and to be in harmony is
to be happy.
So demand that which will best fit you for doing your work happily and well; take from the
universal store that which is yours, but take it in the spirit of Love that knows no “mine” and
“thine.” Give the best that is yours in willing service.
All progress, all unfoldment, all growth is but the more complete expression of the qualities and
attributes inherent in the Underlying Self, the perfect Soul. Work together, in full confidence in

26
each other and in those who guide your way, trusting that the light of Truth will shine upon your
path and that the Peace of the Masters will be with you.
[29th communication (approx.), not noted if signed, pp.348-9]
____________

My Children, Be of good cheer and let not your Hope or your Faith falter at this hour. The shadows
and the mists that have enveloped you will begin to fall away, and from the summit of the heights
of aspiration and endeavor the light of the Higher Intelligence and a clearer inspiration will illu-
mine your Path.
This will be the last message for some time. This ready cooperation on your part has helped us
all…
Certain important truths I have taught you. Among the most important are the following:
The Truth of the Underlying Reality.
The Truth of the reality of Appearance.
The Truth of the Inherent Law of Necessity.
The Truth of the nonexistence of Evil.
The Truth of the possibility of At-one-ment, or Self-realization.
The Truth of Universal Brotherhood.
The Truth of the persistence of Individuality.
And now I go, trusting that the Peace of Perfect Understanding and the Love of the Masters will
ever be with you both, my Children.
[30th communication (approx.), signed ֆ, pp.232-3]
____________

[In response to a personal concern regarding whether to purchase a property.] My Children, I know
what you are most anxious to find out, and I realize how important it seems to you at this time, but
the definite and specific knowledge that you ask for is not in my power to impart.
In the first place, our activity is in the realm of the abstract. We think and act in broader and more
general terms than those which enter into your limited and finite lives; thus we cannot give you
the specific information you seek, because we ourselves do not know in detail the facts of your
concrete and material environment. We are able to grasp and understand and feel and know only
the mental and psychic conditions that arise from or depend on the concrete facts of your personal
lives. It is only through you yourselves that we can come in rapport with your conditions and are
able to know and understand what to you are ordinary physical facts.
So, my Dear Ones, much as we may wish to know the future for your sakes, we may not look
deeper into it than is permitted you yourselves. When we do try to interpret the abstract and infinite
truths, we are very apt to draw the wrong conclusions and so mislead you. In a general and broad
sense, I can tell you this:

27
First, you are not to be under present conditions very long. You will probably go from this place
soon—in just what time I cannot say, for much depends upon yourselves. It may be a month or it
may be six months. As we regard time, it will be soon.
Second, you will be in much better circumstances, as you call it. It may be that you will receive
enough money before you leave to enable you to do as you desire, or it may be that you will work
out better conditions by your own efforts, and gain independence by other activities.
Third, you will eventually live in a place where the conditions are nearly ideal, and among people
who will be congenial with you and with whom you can join forces in working for the betterment
of yourselves and all humanity.
Now, my Dear Ones, be faithful and hopeful and sincere. Trust us in all things to strive only for
your ultimate good, and believe that whatever comes to pass is, and by its very being must be for
the best.
Draw closer to us. Let your lives be in constant rapport with us. Keep in touch, and let us belong
intimately and personally to your lives. The ones who are joined together to work with you are all
lovable in the manifested personalities. Mendar, Denzil, Akasta, Dr. Bruce, Wild Flower, Cleo-
dora, Zanyahda and Madeleine [the band of spirit personalities associated with George Wright]
are all different in their personalities, and should offer you all the social and psychic advantages
of an extended circle of friends.
Be sincere, frank, earnest, loving and helpful to each other. We can all work best when we are all
held closely together by the ties of mutual love and intimate association. The medium is tired and
I will go. May Peace and Hope abide with you both.

____________

[Following George Wright’s death in 1944, one of his two sons, Stowell Wright, received a final
communication from the “Master” nearly fifty years after the last communucation to his father.]
Stowell: You have commented on the messages being too long. Here is a short one.
There is only one All.
The All is all there is, or has been, or ever will be.
All creatures and objects, past, present and future, are manifestations of the All.
Each such manifestation, being and expression of the All, has in it part of the All, and is in itself
part of the All.
Since each individualized soul manifestation is part of the same All, each is part of the other, is
one with the other, and each individual is the other’s Brother.
What each does affects the other, and affects the All.
This is short, yet is the basic Truth of the most important lessons of the Master. May his Peace be
with you.
