Intro & Setup

Setup:
1. Ensure macros are enabled (option chosen on opening file)
2. Enter repair cycle, availability and contingency in table below
3. The latest issue of the Spares MTBF figures should be entered in the
MTBF_Spares spreadsheet. If this is not so go to Update instruction panel

Setup Parameters
Repair Cycle (days) = 20

Availability (Risk Level) = 99.9990%

Contingency Margin = 0.80

Updates:
1. Make a read-only back-up of the existing spreadsheet for safety
2. Copy new MTBF_Spares_Q?_200? spreadsheet as last sheet of this
workbook
2. Highlight the first three columns of the worksheet in (2) and select edit->
copy
3. Click on Cell A2 of the existing MTBF_Spares and select edit -> paste (DO
NOT DELETE and/or replace this sheet as formulae will be corrupted).
4. Review the "MTBF for Calculation" column to see if further Contractual
MTBF information needs to be added. If so add it.
5. Update the Installed Base information to include any changes

N.B. This Excel Workbook structure is designed to allow updating of the MTBF
information whilst retaining the installed base and contractual MTBF customer
specific information.

on opening file) 1. Ensure macros are enabled (option chosen on opening file)
ncy in table below 2. Enter installed base for each part number into Installed Base spreadsheet
s should be entered in the 3. If Contractual MTBF entry is requested enter this in the appropriate p/n row on
o to Update instruction panel the Contractual MTBF s/s (or a new line if not found).
4. Read Spares quantity required from SPARES QUANTITY CALC sheet

Setup Parameters
Repair cycle in days in cell B1 (from field failure to repair returned to stock, viz. GSSC cycle +
shipping times + your dispatch time). Recommend setting in light of actual achieved
cycle times where possible.
This represents the probability that a spare will be available (viz stock > 0) when needed. This
can be interpreted as the proportion of time in which spares are available i.e. 99.9%
Availability means that 0.1% of the year (0.365 days) that module will have zero spares stock.
The system impact is additive for each module. Recommend this critical parameter is set
w.r.t. system availability targets.
This factor allows for non-statistical variation of MTBF (e.g. caused by lightning strikes). Set
this to unity to remove its effect. Recommend set to 0.8

Theory & Assumptions:

readsheet for safety The spares calculation algorithm uses the Poisson distribution to calculate the
dsheet as last sheet of this probability that more than the available number of spares will fail during the repair
cycle time.
sheet in (2) and select edit->
The spares stock is assumed to be available to support the installed base

mulae will be corrupted). regional centres with their own stock. In this case if timely mutual support cannot
o see if further Contractual be arranged between centres for stock run-outs they should be modelled
d it. separately.
lude any changes
The failure rates for each part number is assumed to be random - this might not
ed to allow updating of the MTBF be true if there is an issue relating to installation or system software roll-out, for
and contractual MTBF customer example.
