APPENDIX A: TYPE APPROVED PASSIVELY SAFE

LIGHTING COLUMNS

NOTES:

1. Existing lighting columns deemed compliant by the NZ Transport Agency under the
previous TNZ/NZTA M19 Specification and currently in use in New Zealand being formed
or rolled from steel sheet (up to 3mm wall thickness) or aluminium, of tubular segmental
construction, are deemed to satisfy the passive safety (frangibility) requirements for the
performance classes 70:LE and 70:HE (for ground planted type) and 100:NE (for shear
base type) of this Specification and have been listed in the table of type approved
columns below.

2. Ground planted road lighting columns classified as 70:LE and/or 70:HE may be installed
on State highways with a permanent posted speed limit of greater than 80km/h when
placed behind an accepted road safety barrier system, with a minimum clearance of 1m
between the traffic face of the lighting column and the rearmost component of the barrier
system.

3. All column and outreach combinations must be checked to confirm capability to support
heavy (>15kg) luminaires.

3. Multiple (double, triple or quad) outreaches are subject to site specific design, hence are
not listed herein. Contact the respective supplier for details.

4. Should the NZ Transport Agency discover for any column listed below that the
qualification testing was flawed, that in-service performance reveals unacceptable safety
problems, or that the column being marketed differs significantly from that which was
type approved, the NZ Transport Agency reserves the right to modify or revoke the type
approval.
