COURSE OUTLINE

CONTEMPORARY WORLD
2nd Semester, A.Y. 2019-2020

Course Description:

This course introduces students to the contemporary world by examining the


multifaceted phenomenon of globalization. Using the various disciplines of
the social sciences, it examines the economic, social, political, technological,
and other transformations that have created an increasing awareness of the
interconnectedness of peoples and places around the globe. To this end, the
course provides an overview of the various debates in global governance,
development, and sustainability. Beyond exposing the student to the world
outside the Philippines, it seeks to inculcate a sense of global citizenship and
global ethical responsibility.

General Objectives:

At the end of the course, the students are expected to:


1. Analyze contemporary news events in the context of globalization
2. Analyze global issues in relation to Filipinos and the Philippines
3. Write a research paper with proper citations on a topic related to
globalization
4. Articulate personal positions on various global issues
5. Identify the ethical implications of global citizenship

Course Outline:

PRELIM

Objectives:
At the end of the prelim period, the students are expected to:
1. Know the basic concepts of Globalization
2. Develop a deeper appreciation of the development of International
Trading Systems and Global Financial Crisis
3. Understand the attributes of Today’s Global System
4. Know the Interstate System and Internationalism

MIDTERMS

At the end of the midterm period, the students are expected to:
1. Grasp the basics of an international Organization
2. Understand the structures and functions of the United Nations and its
challenges to Regionalism
3. Comprehend the relationship of countries, regions and globalization.
4. Know the contemporary challenges to Regionalism.

3. Relate everyday encounters with pollution, global warming,
desertification, ozone depletion, and many others with a larger picture
of environmental degradation.

Periodic Exams – 100%; Class Standing – 100% (Quizzes 50% ,


Assignment 15%, Character 10%, Recitation 15%, Attendance 10%)
In order to earn a passing grade, the student should get a transmuted grade
of 75%
