Presentation Script/Notes

Competition-Based Conflict:

Person 1: While healthy workplace competition can be a great motivating tool for employee
performance, unhealthy levels of competition can create a tense and stressful workplace.

Person 2: Employees that face unhealthy competition levels show intense distrust of their
coworkers and do not work well with others.

Person 3: In this clip from the show Community, Jeff Winger wakes up to discover the entire
college has been destroyed due to unhealthy competition from a paintball battle

Person 4: As shown in the clip, there is a very intense amount of competition and distrust that
has arisen from this game due to the dean’s prize of priority registration to the winner.

Person 1: Instead of implementing a reward system that offered a very intense and valuable prize
on a paintball game, the dean could have offered a different reward that would not have created
such a high intensity for the paintball game.

Person 2: Additionally, if the dean wanted to include the prize of priority registration, then he
could have changed up the structure of the game to encourage group work instead of an “every
man for himself” mentality, like offering priority registration for the last five or ten people
standing.

Person 3: Normally, it is management’s job to pay attention towards employee behaviors and the
atmosphere presented in the workplace, but it might be necessary for employees to step up and
address these problems with management if nothing appears to be changing.

Interdependence Conflict

Person 4: Interdependence conflicts arise in scenarios where coworkers need to coordinate their
tasks together so that others can accomplish their own tasks or meet a deadline

Person 1: When one person is not able to successfully complete their part of the task or
completes it incorrectly, it can cause other people to not be able to complete their tasks or
responsibilities, which can affect an entire business or project plan.

Person 2: To solve these types of conflicts, the best method is to use task delegation to delegate
responsibilities evenly so that nobody is doing too much of one job. While this is normally
management’s decision, if an employee is concerned that their workload is too much and they
will not complete their work on time, they should speak up to let their management know.

Person 3: An employee can also seek help from other coworkers regarding a high workload to
see if they would be able to help them divide and conquer the work so that their tasks can be
completed on time.
