Investigative Practical-Form Four

The Investigative practical is one of the labs for SBA where you
PLAN and then CARRY OUT/EXECUTE your plan.

The part where you carry out this lab is done in FORM
FIVE.
You only have to do one Investigative practical per student
regardless of the number of Science subjects you are doing.

For example; if you are doing Biology, Chemistry and Physics….you

will do only ONE investigative practical in the science subject of
your choosing

During this time of quarantine…take this time to plan and design.

Other activities would be forthcoming…

Scenario for Investigative Practical:

The Ministry of Education has proposed that drinks with added

sugars would be banned from being sold on the compounds of all
schools. Many of the fruit juice manufacturers have started
advertising and distributing juices labelled as “no added sugar”
to schools. Design and execute an experiment to determine if
these manufacturers are being truthful
HYPOTHESIS: A testable educated guess based on observations
(from the scenario)

AIM: Must be related to the hypothesis you stated above

APPARATUS AND MATERIALS: ALL the materials, equipment and

chemicals to be used in the experiment

 If you plan to use some device or instrument, you can include

a LABELLED SCIENTIFIC DIAGRAM

METHOD: step-wise and in present tense. YOU MUST INCLUDE A

CONTROL

*In designing a plan and design laboratory, each experiment

you would change only ONE VARIABLE/FACTOR

*In the CONTROL-try not to change the manipulated variable

Controlled variables

Manipulated variable

Responding variable

EXPECTED RESULTS AND OBSERVATIONS:

 Include what data you will compile and how you will compile it
Scarborough Secondary Biology 2020 Ms. Moses-Peters

 Any other treatment of the results, you can also include

DISCUSSION OF EXPECTED RESULTS:

Discuss/Explain the results you THINK you will get-any expected

trends you THINK you will observe

PRECAUTIONS/SOURCES OF ERROR/LIMITATIONS: What

precautions you will need to take/What sources of error or
limitations you expect will affect the accuracy of your experiment
(any 2 with explained relevance to your planned experiment)

CONCLUSION: What do you expect to happen for you to accept the

hypothesis?
