The theme of kindness runs throughout
the novel The Elephant Man. Throughout
the story, many people show kindness
to Merrick. Dr Treves is extremely kind to
Merrick and helps him to have a happy
life. Other people, like the Queen of
England, are also kind to Merrick. She
visits Merrick and gives him a present.
The other theme is that we should not
judge people based on appearances.
Merrick looks different from other people
and is very ugly. Because of this, people
are unkind to him. Simon Silcock is very
cruel to Merrick and other people laugh
at Merrick or even scream when they see
him. They do not see that Merrick is a
very good-natured person.
Moby Dick
Revenge is one of the main themes in the
novel Moby Dick. Moby Dick took Captain
Ahab’s leg and he became obsessed
with revenge. His main mission is to kill
Moby Dick. He is so blinded by hatred
that he does not care if he endangers his
life or the lives of his men. Another theme
is duty. The crew members of the Pequod
have a duty to obey their captain. They
are obligated to follow Captain Ahab on
his dangerous quest to kill Moby Dick.
However, they also have a duty to take
care of their families. They earn money
by collecting whale oil to provide for their
families.
We Didn’t Mean to Go to Sea
In the novel We Didn’t Mean to Go to
Sea, responsibility is one of the main
themes. John is very responsible and
when the Goblin begins to drift out to sea,
he assumes the role of captain. He does
whatever he needs to do to bring the
Goblin to safety. Jim also feels responsible
for the children. When he wakes up in
hospital, he immediately goes to search
