The Extraordinary Channels are included as standard information i
prehensive acupuncture texts; however the discussions are generally bri
city of information in the classical t exts. The most comprehensive discus
naries can be found in M atsumoto and Birch’s Extraordinary Vessels .

The Four Primary Extraordinaries


The general consensus, from the classics as well as modern texts, is
Extraordinaries have a significant role in regulating the flow of Qi and
channels. This is certainly so w ith regard to t he Governor Vessel (Du M ai
Vessel (Ren Mai). The Du M ai has the function of regulating all of the
body and the Ren Mai has the function of receiving and bearing the Qi o
