VALUES
 Customer first
 Honesty of purpose
 Teamwork
 Excellence

ETHICAL ISSUES WITHIN ORGANIZATIONS

 Favoritism. This means that the employer may favor a particular person with regard to
promotions and bonuses and evidently neglect other eligible employees. Favoritism was
one issue faced at UBL.

 Sexual harassment is not legal/ethical/moral whether in the workplace or out of it.

Harassing an employee sexually, or refraining from taking action against those who are
involved in such offences, is strictly forbidden but an employee told she was harassed by
male employees.

 Making long phone calls at the company’s cost. UBL provide a refund for the phone
bills of the employees, especially if the employee is dealing with a job which that involves
using the telephone. Taking advantage of the fact and making personal phone calls is
unethical.
 Taking home the company’s assets. Some employees pocket tools and stationery such
as staplers, pins, papers etc. to use them at home. This would have probably gone
undetected by the cameras but employee theft is one major issue
 Taking excessive leaves beyond the allowed number is a breach of ethical code but
some employees have been observed taking advantage and getting excessive leaves.
 Improper usage of machineries. Some employees make use of office computer and
printers for personal uses such as taking lengthy print outs, heavy downloading and even
unnecessary net surfing etc

RECOMMENDATION FOR UBL:

1. SET EXPECTATIONS
UBL must develop a workplace policy based on company’s philosophy, mission statement and
code of conduct. Incorporate the policy into performance management program to hold
employees accountable for their actions and alert them to their responsibilities to uphold
professional standards throughout their job performance and interaction with peers and
supervisors. Revise employee handbook to include the policy and provide copies of the revised
handbook to employees. Obtain signed acknowledgement forms from employees that indicate
they received and understand the workplace ethics policy.

2. TRAIN YOUR EMPLOYEES

UBL must provide workplace ethics training to employees. Utilize varied instruction methods to
engage employees in learning how to address and resolve ethical dilemmas. Experiential
learning, or role-play, is an effective way to facilitate workplace ethics training. Examples of
workplace ethics simulations involve scenarios about the misappropriation of company funds,
personal values related to improper workplace relationships and the organization’s compliance
with regulatory controls.

3. PUT SOMEONE IN CHARGE

Designate an ombudsperson in charge of handling employees’ informal concerns pertaining to
workplace ethics. Consider whether your organization also needs an ethics hotline, which is a
confidential service employees may contact whenever they encounter workplace dilemmas
that put them into uncomfortable or threatening positions. Confidential hotlines are an
effective way to assure employees’ anonymity, which is a concern for employees whose alerts
are considered “whistleblowing” actions and for harrasment.

4. BE FAIR
Apply UBL workplace policy consistently when addressing workplace issues and employee
concerns about workplace ethics. Use the same business principles in every circumstance,
regardless of the perceived seriousness or the level of employees involved. Communicate the
same expectations for all employees – whether they are in executive positions or front-line
production roles – and approach every issue with equal interpretation of the company policy.
