MELODIC INDEX
OF
VOCALAND INSTRUMENTALTHEMES OF BACH.

Report made to the winter meeting of the Music Library

Association by May deForest Payne

Purpose. To aid music librarians and practical musicians to find

themes by the sound of the "first line" in the absence

of the usual information in regard to the name, form,
or instrumentation of a piece of music.

By "first line" is meant an arbitrary fixing of the

first four moving melody notes. (This form of index

may be used equally well for other composers or sub-

jects, as for Bach)

Sources. The vocal and instrumental themes are compiled as

follows: (approximately 3658 in number), 3046 in

both BG and P, 21 Neue BG, and about 600 miscellaneous

extras, 703 themes, (688 Recitatives, and 15

transition passages) are not indexed.
The Peters theme number and the BG volume and page,

as well as the name, form, and instrumentation, are

given on each card, together with the first 2, 3, or

4 measures of the theme. The vocal cards are

distinguished from the instrumental cards by a green

edge.
Method. Any four notes form 1 of the following shapes: / /A A/ \

\/Jwhich make up the 6 principal divisions of the

index. 848 melodic patterns, or "Categories", are

found; i.e, (1-2-3-4 or 5-8-7-8, etc.). The index

is contained in five boxes, each having its "finding

chart" giving category numbers (black) with number of

themes in each (major-red, minor-green).

Remarks. Only 4 moving notes are used except in ascending and

decending scale passages where further distinctions,

such as 1-5, 1-6, 8-4, etc. obviate running through

more than 50 cards. Under each heading, themes go

up and down by increasingly large intervals, i.e.

steps, 3rd, 4th, etc. Ornaments are ignored. A

literal interpretation is used except in cases of key

or theme ambiguity or introductory chords.

Information. 1. Shapes /\ has the most themes (993), more

go up than down (2160-1498).

2. Mode: more themes major than minor (1928-1730).

3. Degree of scale: 45 percent begin on 1.

4. Categories. (Melodic Patterns): The 20 most
common, containing 25-69 themes each, are as follows:

/ 84 Categories: Major 1-4, 1-5, Minor 1-5, Maj. 1 3

5 8, Maj. 5-8, Maj. and Min. 5 1 2 3

Maj. 3 2 1 2, MLaj. 5 3 4 5.
\/\ 143 " none (with 25 or more themes).
848 (The rest have 1-25 each).

The New York Public Library, at 42nd Street, has been

most helpful, and offers to keep the index for use

and experiment. Many special cross-references; i.e.

Fugues, Organ and Piano Works separately, and other

groupings will be possible later.
