DIVERSITY PAPER 2

In the era of globalization, diversity is becoming increasingly present across all aspects of

life. Consisting of ethnicity, race, gender or socio-economic background, diversity and a

multicultural environment are important for a whole host of reasons. Personally, it must be very

interesting to live in a diverse world.

According to Castania, K., “Diversity is differences among people with respect to age,

class, ethnicity, gender, physical and mental ability, race, sexual orientation, spiritual practice,

and other human differences”. From my perspective, the word “diversity” means that the great

variety of distinctions that exit between persons and groups, a field of different objects. This

definition was inspired when I was a child, I realized that a doll is different from a robot. I

identified people around me by their own appearance. I saw a lot of color in my comic book my

mom read before bedtime. Since then, I have known that there is a whole world of multiple

things.

That was on a multi-cultural festival in my high school, I was on behalf of my school to

participate the opening performance with a lot of friends from another country in Asia. I regard

people in this case setting to be diverse because they speak in different languages from each

other. They wore their countries’ traditional costume. Take me as an example, on that day I wore

Ao Dai – my traditional costume (Viet Nam), but Aiko who is a Japanese girl wore Kimono. We

had chance to taste different countries’ special cuisine. Each country has a unique feature that

makes our life became far too abundant and far too diverse.

Learning, working, and living in a varied environment are very important to me. It is

evident that a diverse environment has multiple benefits for personal development. In education,

studying in an international environment means regular exposure to cultures, practices and ideas.

Exchanging with a diverse range of people will get you ready to be part of a global society,

whether it is within your business or personal life – not to mention the opportunity of learning

new languages. Diversity and inclusion breed productivity as the ability to learn and grow from

each other is exponentially expanded. A multicultural exchange of ideas boosts affluent ideas, in

turn leading to innovation and creativity.

Brenner, L. (2018) further noted that “your courtesy and respect help establish a good

foundation for effective communication”. For communicating with diverse populations better,

people should follow these practices. First and foremost, slow down when you speak. Allow

those who do not have the same native language as you the time to interpret what you are saying.

Secondly, speak clearly and concisely. Make eye contact and enunciate plainly. Avoid using

ambiguous or dual-meaning words because one of the problems non-native-English-speaking

cultures have with the English language is misunderstanding the many meanings one word can

have. Finally, keep it simple. Think in terms of your audience, and speak to their understanding.

Don't make long speeches that lose your group. Allow listeners the time to soak in what you

have said. Pay attention to your audience and be an active speaker and listener. You can ascertain

a group's grasp of your communication by their response to your words.

On the whole, diversity plays a very important role in our life. O’Boyle, T. (2016) agreed

that “even in the face of intolerance, discrimination, and violence, we must not forget to spread

the word about the importance of diversity and to respond to that violence with a love and a

celebration of our differences”. Together, our differences make a strong, beautiful, world

community.
