4.13 Inhibiting operation - Deconfiguration via network A-A VIEW

Inhibiting the device is required in operating plants, to avoid
inefficiency on feeding a protection whose settings are un-
known or need to be changed.
The inhibition is performed by holding the settings change

not affect the inhibited state of the device. IAVVERTENZA

The full procedure for inhibiting and de-configuring the device

Operation can only be reset by moving to the settings change

found in figure 3 when subject to the voltage Vr.
Similarly even the CT's, which in the differential protection are
phase by phase parallel to one another and to the differential
branch, by the voltage Vr to the secondary terminals , they
require a magnetizing current Im which can be ascertained
from their magnetizing characteristic, which does not concern
the differential branch.
From the above statement, it is evident that, to have a current
in the differential branch that equals Ir, after calling n the
number of the parallel-connected CT's and N their turn ratio,
the system must be characterized by a minimum fault current
on the primary side equalling:
Igm=(n Im + Iv + Ir) N
or vice versa, always from the same relation, you can find the
maximum number of starts that may be connected to the relay
to have the protection trip set to Ir with a minimum fault current
equalling Igm.

g) knee voltage Vk> 2Vr

In order to minimize Rc, it is advisable to locate the differential

node in a position that is electrically equidistant from all
parallel-connected CT's;the connection between protection
and differential node is not critical for the purpose of protection
stability.

It is advisable to use, as far as possible in connection with the

plant situation, the highest value of the impedance R among
the three values available : 500, 1000 or 2000 ohm and set the
tripping threshold Ir to an indicative value equalling 110%Is
without however exceeding the maximum current that may be
supported by the impedance, otherwise it is good rule to also
provide the monitoring of current circuits (see 7.1.2).
As the current unit concerned by the sole difference current and
not by the phase currents (the differential node is external to
the protection), for reasons in connection with sensitivity, you
can set In=1A even for CT's where In=5A; in such a case, you
need to remember that all measurements are expressed in
multiples of 1A.
The trip, as for all differential protections, shall be
instantaneous (thresholds IA>>, IB>> and IC>>).
For special applications where the intervention of the protection
does not involve the opening of the power current circuits, in
order not to stress the high impedance uselessly, it is advisable
to short-circuit it upon tripping through a block relay.

7.1.2 Monitoring current circuits

Also the continuous monitoring of current circuits effectiveness
is being often and often requested in the applications of the
high-impedance bus bar differential protections: to this aim,
the overvoltage thresholds UA>, UB> e UC> may be used.
The interruption of a secondary circuit in a CT in the differential
protection causes an unbalance that, for sensitivity-related
reasons, may happen not to be detected by the current
protection, thus creating a dangerous instability of the system
for faults external to the bus bar; Furthermore, the same current
unbalance may exceed the maximum limit of permanent
tolerability of the high impedance.

8. INSTALLATION - TRANSPORT 8.4 X2/DVZ3R Attachment

8.1 ESD Electrostatic Charges The attachment is only available for surface-mounting with
screw terminals available on front or rear (see figure 7).
The relay uses electronic components that are highly sensitive
The parts making up the attachment may reach high tempera-
to electrostatic charges. Therefore, the operator who happens

with the electronic circuits, must take preventive measures to

avoid damaging the relay:
Connect the ground screw of the unit to the protection ground
- before removing the movable part, the operator must reach
of the panel with a connection of suitable gauge(>4mm2) and
the same potential as the equipment by touching the case
as short as possible (<1m).
- avoid touching electronic components, printed circuit
boards and connectors, as far as this is possible. Handle
it by using the mechanical frame.
- lay the device on surfaces that are antistatic or feature the
same potential as the operator's.
- only store and transport the relay by using the special
antistatic bag.

Special electronic devices require the operator and the unit to

be both grounded along with any measuring instrument, when
this is possible.
As far as the following action is possible and reasonable, do
not pull out the moving part from the casing to avoid causing
mechanical and electrostatic damages to the protection.

8.2 Acceptance - storage

Although protective relays are generally of robust construction,
they require a careful treatment prior to installation on site,
since they must be carefully packed and unpacked, without
applying any force and using suitable tools.
Once supplied, the relays must be thoroughly inspected to
ensure that they have not undergone shipping damages.
If the relays are not immediately installed upon reception, they
must be stored in places free from dust and moisture, in their
original packing.
Storage temperature: -25°C + 80°C.

8.3 Assembling and connection

- Remove the protective cover until the four fastening holes
become visible.
- Place the equipment into the hole of the panel-board and
secure it by fastening the four screws (see fig. 6)
- Connect the ground screw of the equipment to the protection
ground of the panel-board using connectors of suitable gauge
(>4mm 2) and as short as possible (<1m).
- The connections must be made through the screw or Faston
connections of the interface terminal blocks. In the event of
Faston wiring, the cover that provides the terminal block with
the IP20 protection class must be placed before the Faston is
connected to the relay. In the event of screw wiring, the side fins
of the IP20 cover that correspond to the wired terminals must
be removed or folded.
The assembling and wiring must be carried out according to
the best workmanship.

Since the unit is equipped with a self-monitoring system, all
hardware and software failures possibly occurring are auto-
matically detected; this makes it useless to test the thresholds
for accuracy, which can however be tested by making refer-
ence to the tolerances specified on the catalogue.

IN order to test the attachment X2/DVZ3R for proper opera-

tion, inject current between phase and neutral, whose value
matches that stated in the previous point, and measure the
corresponding voltage on the injector's terminals; then, if
the injector allows that, increase the current and test the
associated voltage increase for non-linearity. The test shall
be carried out rapidly not to overheat the high-impedance
elements.
The high-impedance value can be measured by means of
a ohmmeter (see fig.7).
- With operating protection, check the MEASUREMENTS
MENU for the absence of the current signal IA, IB and IC
along with the absence of UA, UB and UC voltage.
A voltage and current signal, if the above conditions are
verified, may mean a "turnover" in the wiring which, from a
CT, end to the differential node.

Warning:
Short-circuiting a current input without first isolating it causes
the differential protection to be cut out.
Hence, check all CT's for the correct state before starting the
tests and, above all, before finally setting the unit at work.

If the relay has not worked correctly or shows VITAL failures,

it must be put out of order and sent back to the factory for repair
or re-gauging.
The presence of a NON-VITAL fault does not cause an ill-timed
operation, but demands an analysis of the fault type to assess
its importance (for instance, a failing end relay should be
replaced with another end relay that is not currently being used
or, else, whose function is not strictly required).
The possibility of exchanging the relays makes it possible to
maintain the protection scheme working during repairs, so
that any faulty relay can be replaced with a new one of the same
type.

To complete the start-up stage, before setting the system at

work, ensure that:
- the device settings match the design specifications.
- the device bears the correct plant-identifying alphanu-
meric code.
- all the device memories (LED’s, maximum values, partial
counters and wear index) are reset.
- the green Uaux and RUN LED’s are lit up with permanent
light; in the event of network connection, the green RxTx LED
must be lit up, too.
- the LED’s indicating labels and the device rating plate
display the correct information.
You can leave the relay with the display showing any of the
windows of the main reading menu.
