Oldie but (not so) goodie

What goes around, comes around. Only a handful of
kids then who would remember the “Spanish Flu” of
1918-20 will be alive today and all would be well over
100. The health system was totally overwhelmed
then. There were none of the miracle drugs,
electronics, or cures that were developed later. If you
got it and were lucky enough to get to a hospital, you
were even luckier to be put on an iron bed with a
mattress that was still warm from the last “Spanish
Flu” patient who died on it. The chances were very
high you wouldn’t have the bed for long. Most died
at home. The country came back big-time with the
Roaring 20s and, along the way, produced, educated,
and mentored our parents and their siblings whom we
now call: “the Greatest Generation”. Here’s to hoping
for the Roaring 20s, a century later, once again.

the fact remains that you can’t argue with results, don’t

In addition to the regular bid for congregate meals, the Valley County
Commissioners are soliciting bids for preparation of congregate meals and
home delivered meals at the Senior Center in Glasgow. Meals could either
be prepared on site or delivered to the Senior Center five days a week.
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Board of County Commissioners
of Valley County, Montana, will receive sealed written bids for congregate
meals in Fort Peck, Nashua, Hinsdale, Opheim, and Glasgow, and home
delivered meal bids for the elderly for July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021. Meals
served must be acceptable to the elderly consumer and meet 1/3 RDA.
Meals will be served on days and times mutually agreed upon by the two
parties. The following meal pattern is required:
Meat or meat alternative - 3 edible ounces
Vegetables and Fruit - 3 servings
Vegetable serving = 1 cup leafy greens or ½ cup cooked
Fruit serving = ½ cup or 1 serving
Grains - 2 servings
(whole grains: 100% whole wheat breads, pasta, brown rice)
Milk or dairy equivalent - 1 serving
Coffee or hot tea
The caterer is responsible for following all safety and sanitation
regulations as established by the State of Montana. The caterer is
responsible for paying all costs of food, supplies, labor, and other costs
as necessary in providing the meals. Meals may be served on site or at
another location. The location of meals served on site must be accessible
to people with disabilities. Bids must be received in the courthouse by
5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5, 2020. Bids will be opened at 10:00 a.m.

The board of directors will hold an open meeting to release all activity
taken place during the virus lockdown and emergency situation that was
handled related to water and sewer service in St. Marie.

agenda for discussion.

Spring sports a no go

It’s official. The 2020 spring sports season has
been canceled, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Montana High School Association had postponed
the season until April 24, but has since decided to
cancel it.
The MHSA had planned to let the schools start
the spring sports season if school resumes May 4. As it
looks schools can either restart on May 7 or decide to
remain closed until the fall school year.
Montana governor Steve Bullock announced
Wednesday afternoon a gradual re-opening of the state.
As part of the plan it was to reopen schools May 7. Of
course, districts have the choice to reopen or stay closed
until the 2020-21 school year.
The Glasgow school board will hold a special
meeting Saturday at 10 a.m., which will be a ZOOM
meeting. Hinsdale and Frazer also plan to have meetings.
Many of the districts have already elected not to
reopen. With that it was this factor that the MHSA
decided to cancel the season. Besides that the athletes
needed five practices, two for golfers, in able to
participate in track or softball. By then it would be time
for district, for track. There would be no other meets to
get prepared for the district, which has the divisional
next, and then state. Softball goes into divisional
followed by state.
Softball would probably have time for a few games
before divisional. Even with that there would not be
enough time for conference games to determine seeding.
Huntley Project, the defending state B-C champs were
poised to win it again this year with six or seven seniors.
Those seniors will leave high school without knowing
whether they would win it or not. The track and golf
athletes will also leave not knowing how they would
have done.
The underclassmen, they will have next year to
look forward to another season, we hope.
Athletes are not the only ones this hurts. The
coaches put in a lot of time preparing practices, working
year-round at times.
Now, what about graduation? There has not been a
decision on graduation as of yet. The social distancing is
still in force. So, why not just let the parents and brothers
and sisters attend while broadcasting. Nemont could do
it in northeast Montana, as I said before.
The last time sports were canceled was 1943.
Hopefully fall sports will be a go.

Going on a Bear Hunt
Irle School staff is calling on all community members!
With Spring finally arriving here in Glasgow, here’s an
idea to provide an outdoor activity for all kids young
and old. To participate you only need to place a teddy
bear or any stuffed animal in the window(s) of your
home or business. Bonus points for Scotty Dogs! If
you do not have a stuffed animal, no problem, you can
also print a picture of your favorite stuffed animal for
your window. Be creative! You can put some outside
in your front yard that may be easy or a little more
difficult to find. Children and their families will then be
able to take a walk or car ride around town to count or
“hunt” for bears while maintaining social distancing. Dr.
Millard has approved this special hunt which will begin
on Monday, April 27th and run through Friday, May 8th.
Record your hunt (one point per Teddy bear or other
stuffed animal and two points for each Scotty dog) and
tally your score up at the end of the hunt. Please help

Dear Customers:
Starting January 2020, the Valley County Refuse
District #1 is limiting use of the container sites (blue
containers) to the dumping of household garbage
only. If a load contains any items other than daily
household garbage, the scale and landfill must be
used to dispose of those items. If a load weighs less
than 400 pounds, a flat rate of $5.00 per load will be
assessed. Anything in excess of that amount will be
charged based upon tonnage. If the cost of a load is
under $20.00, payment will be required to be made
at the scale. Individuals not using the scale when
required will be assessed fees according to the
following schedule adopted by the Refuse District:
• Pickup, Single Axel Trailer - $100.00 per load
• Tandem Axel Trailer, Single Axel Farm Truck -
$200.00 per load
• Tandem Axel Farm Truck, Triple Axel Trailer -
$400.00 per load
After notice of a fee being assessed is given,
failure to pay in a timely manner it may be deemed a
theft of services and will be referred to Valley County
Sheriff’s Office and could result in prosecution.
The following items ARE NOT considered
household garbage items:
• Railroad Ties
• Construction Material
• Shingles/Roofing Material
• Tires
The taxes assessed on properties are to provide
for disposal of household garbage, and other items
must be paid for separately as a result.
Landfill hours are Monday through Friday from
7:00 am to 4:00 pm and Saturdays from 8:00 am
to 12:00 pm. Refuse District Board meetings are
held the third Tuesday of each month at 5:00 pm.
