Seal Materials
Urethane
formulation of copolymers of ether or ester based urethanes, it is used in a number of applications such as seals, wipers, back-up
A
rings and custom molded parts. Highly resilient, high tensile strength, excellent cut resistance and highly resistant to oil swell, ozone,
oxidation and abrasion. Urethane is an excellent choice in hydraulic systems using petroleum based fluids. Operating temperature
ranges from -65º F to +200º F (-54º C to +93º C)
Ultrathane K-24
new polyurethane material offering up to 43% reduced friction over conventional urethane materials. Because of this reduced friction
A
and the resulting lowering of frictional heat build-up at the seal interface, the operating temperature of this material is -65º F to +225º F
(-54º C to +107º C). Urethane fluid compatibility is the same as above and is good for service to 5000 psi at recommended dimensions
and tolerances.
Hytrel
n engineered thermoplastic elastomer featuring high resistance to fatigue, chemicals, oils, solvents and abrasion. Hytrel can be
A
custom molded and features many of the most desirable characteristics of high performance elastomers. Common parts made from
Hytrel are wipers, vee rings and polypaks. Working temperature range is -40º F to +250º F (-40º C to +121º C).
Nitrile
he most common nitrile copolymyer blend is the compound known as Buna-N. Possessing very good resistance to petroleum based
T
hydraulic oils, Buna-N also works well with fuels such as diesel or gasoline. Nitrile seals have a good resistance to compression
set, but their flexibility suffers somewhat in lower temperatures. Working temperature range is -40º F to +250º F (-40º C to +121º C).
Special Nitrile formulations may have a higher upper limit to +300º F (+149º C).
Nitroxile
itroxile is a Carboxylated Nitrile material offering 3 to 5 time greater resistance to abrasion than conventional nitrile compounds.
N
This material is also available with internal lubrication to reduce friction. Nitroxile is suitable for general hydraulic service in petroleum
based fluids, water-oil emulsions, water-glycol fluids and water based fluids (HWBF). Nitroxiles operating temperature range is -40º F
to +250º F (-40º C to +121º C).
Teflon®
his material offers high heat resistance, low temperature flexibilty, low running friction, chemical inertness and non-adhesive
T
characteristics. Most Teflon seals are fortified with short glass fibers, bronze flashes, carbon, graphite, or a combination of these fillers.
Temperature range is -65º F to +500º F (-54º C to +260º C) although this temperature range may be reduced by the addition of certain
fillers.
Nylon
Nylon is an engineered thermoplastic which has many uses. Adapter rings, bearings and guide rings are some of these. To enhance
the physical properties, additives such as glass-fibers, lubricants, heat and ultraviolet stabilizers are combined. Nylon features high
resistance to fatigue, chemicals, oils, solvents and abrasion.Temperature range is -65º F to +275º F (-54º C to +135º C) and can be
extended with the addition of certain fillers.
FluoroMyte
eveloped to meet seal needs in high pressure hydraulic systems. FluoroMyte has exceptionally high tear strength and abrasion
D
resistance. It also has lower friction than PolyMyte due to special lubricants disbursed in the base material. FluoroMyte has excellent
resistance to oxygen, ozone, petroleum and phosphate ester based fluids. Temperature range of this material is -65º F to +300º F
(-54º C to +149º C)
Ethylene Propylene
ot suited for petroleum based fluids, but is a useful seal material for phosphate ester (Fire retardent) hydraulic fluids. Also
N
suitable for use with automotive brake fluids, weak caustics, steam, acetone, acids and akalies. Temperature range of this
material is -65º F to +300º F (-54º C to +149º C) and to +400º F (+204º C) in steam.
Silicone
A stable elastomer combining silicon, oxygen, hydrogen and carbon. Silicone is not recommended for dynamic situations
due to high friction and poor abrasion resistance, but the material is unsurpassed for use in static seals subjected to dry
heat, ultraviolet light and ozone. The temperature range of this material is -75º F to +450º F (-59º C to +232º C)
Glossary of Terms
Abrasion Resistance - The ability of a compound to resist mechanical wear.
Brittleness - Tendency to crack when deformed.
Compression Set - The amount by which a rubber specimen fails to return to original shape after release of a compressive load.
Durometer - A generic term referring to the instrument and the scale used to measure the relative hardness of various elastomers (Shore A and
Shore D scales). The higher the durometer rating the higher the resistance to an indentor point penetrating into the surface of the rubber material.
Dynamic Seal - A sealing device used between mating surfaces that have relative motion.
Elastomer - A synthetic or natural material having the capacity for large deformation and rapid, complete recovery from the deforming force.
Elongation - The percent increase in the original length of a specimen when it breaks.
Extrusion - Distortion or flow, under pressure, of a portion of the seal into clearence between mating metal parts.
Filler - Chemically inert, finely divided material added to the elastomer to aid in processing and improve the physical properties, i.e., temperature
or abrasion resistance, strength or to give it varying degrees of hardness.
Flash - Excessive rubber left around the part after molding due to space between mating mold surfaces. Typically removed by trimming.
Friction- Resistance to motion due to the contact os surfaces.
Gland - A groove or open area machined into the head or piston that houses the sealing device.
Hardness - Resistance to a distorting force. Measured by the relative resistance of the material to an indentor point of any one of a number
of standard hardness testing instruments.
Hardness SHORE A - The rubber durometer hardness as measured on a Shore "A" guage. Higher numbers indicate harder material.
35 Shore "A" durometer reading is considered soft. 90 is considered hard.
Memory - Tendency of a material to return to original shape after deformation.
Modulus - Tensile stress at a specified elongation. (Usually 100% elongation for elastomers.)
Nominal Dimension - Nearest fractional equivalent to actual dimensions.
Oxidation - The reaction of oxygen on a compound usually detected by a change in the physical properties, appearence or feel of the surface.
Seal Materials
Permanent Set - The deformation remaining after a specimen has been stressed in tension for a definite period and released for a definite period.
Permeability - The rate at which a liquid or gas under pressure passes through a solid material by diffusion and solution. In rubber terminology, it is
the rate of gas flow expressed in atmospheric cubic centimeters per second through an elastomeric material one centimeter square and one centimeter
thick (atm cc/cm2/cm/cm/sec).
Resilient - Capable of returning to original size and shape after deformation.
Static Seal - A sealing device used between mating surfaces that have no relative motion.
Squeeze - Diametral compression of O-Ring between surface of the groove bottom and surface of other mating metal part in the gland assembly.
Swell - Increased volume of a specimen caused by immersion in a fluid (usually a liquid).
Tear Resistance - Resistance to growth of a cut or nick when tension is applied to the specimen. Commonly expressed as pounds per inch thickness.
Tensile Strength - Force in pounds per square inch required to cause a rupture of a specimen of a rubber material.
Thermal Expansion - Expansion caused by increase in temperature. May be linear or volumetric.
Viscosity - The property of fluids and plastic solids by which they resist an instantaneous change of shape, i.e., resistance to flow.

2. EXTRUSION of the seal element is usually caused by excessive 6. SYSTEM CONTAMINATION is usually caused by external
clearances in metal components, high axial loading, high pressure and elements such as dirt, grit, mud, dust, even ice and internal con-
use of too low a durometer seal material. Extrusion causes a loss in tamination from circulating metal chips, breakdown products of
seal volume and stability. The prevention of extrusion usually requires the fluid, hoses or other degradable system components. As most
a type of seal with built-in backup rings or use of a high durometer external contamination enters the system during rod retraction,
“extrusion-resistant” material. Seals for this purpose include PolyPaks, the proper installation of a rod wiper / scraper is the best solution.
SCL seals,T-seals and auxilliary devices such as modular back-ups. Internal contamination is best prevented by proper filtering of system
fluid. Contamination is indicated by scored rod and cylinder bore
