COG RLS Tank Wagon Diesel COG

1 Ullage for Diesel

1.1.1 Tank Volume

The RLS Tank Volume is illustrated in Figure 1 based on the actual volume of the tank
as per RLS Tank Wagon Diagram in Appendix A.

V Tank =36 400 litres(Total volume of the Tank )

Figure 1: RLS Tank Volume Measured from Creo

1.1.2 Volume of the Tank after Considering the Ullage Percentage

Taking into consideration 1% ullage, product is not dangerous by inhalation

V Tank =36 980× 99 % ( not dangerous by inhalation )

V Tank =36 036litres

ρ20 c =840 kg/m 3

ρ46 c =818.6 kg /m3

m=ρ × vol

mass 46 c =36 036 × 818.6

The ullage at 840kg /m3 is 153.50 mm as illustrated in Figure 2 as per Creo Model.

2.1 Empty Condition

The centre of gravity for empty wagon is the same or lower as the for XP-10 wagons,
because of the following;
- 785 kg of the sloshing plates were added in the centre of the tank
- About 1000 kg of air brakes components system was added on the lower
section of the wagon.
- There were no masses added at the upper section of the wagon
- By applying engineering sense, the centre of mass for empty wagon will drop
slightly from the previous XPJ-10 wagon
- However to avoid this uncertainty, let the centre of gravity of RLS wagon
be;1162 mm, measured from the rail way (Appendix B: XPJ-10 Wagon
Diagram)

2.2 Loaded Condition

Methodology: the centre of mass for loaded conditioned was calculated using the
following formula;

(Tare Mass¿¿ wagon× COG¿¿ Empty )+ M Load ×COG Load

COG Loaded= ¿¿
Gross Mass on Rail
Where;

COG_Loaded Condition is obtained from a model, as shown in the figure below, with
correct assigned commodity properties (density of 840 kg/m 3 @ 20 0c) The Payload
and Volume are obtain from Creo Model after considering Ullage as illustrated in
Figure 3.

Figure 3: Load Condition

Therefore;

 Density of 840 kg/m3

 Payload of 29 498 kg
 Volume 35 116 L , which is approximately 35 118 Litres
The COG loaded -32.7mm (Pointing Down) with respect to the centre of the tank as
shown in Figure 3.

Therefore; Y for loaded condition is;

Y = distance from rail to centre of the tank (as per Appendix A and B) minus COG of
loaded condition from Creo

Y =2097−32.7

¿ 2065

(Measured from rail level)

Therefore COG Loaded Condition is;

(Tare Mass¿¿ wagon× COG¿¿ Empty )+ M Load ×COG Load

COG Loaded= ¿¿
Gross Mass on Rail

22250 ×1162+29498 × 2065

COG Loaded=
22250+29498

¿ 1676.7 mm

Thus, the centre of mass of RLS wagon in loaded condition is 1 677 mm, measure
from the rail level which is less than 1829 mm.

3 COG (Track Gauge: 914 mm)

The COG for 914 mm track gauge is obtained from the method below;
COG1067 COG914
=
Track 1067 Track 914

Therefore

Track 914 ×COG1067

COG914 =
Track 1067

3.1 Empty Condition

914 × 1162
COG914 =
1067

¿ 995 mm

3.2 Loaded condition

914 × 1677
COG 914 =
1067

¿ 1437 mm

4 Conclusion
 The following data should be stencilled on all RLS tank wagons, except for the full
capacity, where each wagon should be stencilled with its own new full capacity
after subtracting the volumetric capacity of the sloshing plates from the old full
capacity per wagon.
PAY LOAD 29 498 KG

PAY LOAD 35 118 LITRES @ 20oc

 It is urged to load the RLS wagons in litres scale of Diesel @ 20 oc, or at a specific
temperature of diesel where the loaded wagon will be equivalent to the total mass
of 29 498 Kg or in mass scale, rather than in Ullage scale, in order to load wagon
accurately. Since this Ullage height is an average Value. Otherwise it is urged to
load as per what is stencilled on the wagon.
 The centre of gravity of RLS wagon in full loaded condition is 1677 mm, measured
from the rail level, which is within the allowable condition(less than 1829 mm) of
track gauge of 1067mm.
 Based on the method used to estimate the COG of RLS at 914 Track gauge, it
can be concluded that the COG have decrease from 1677 to 1437 mm, therefore
these wagon can be used on the 914 Track Gauge

5 Recommendation
 It is recommended to do the practical COG of the RLS Wagon when 914 mm track
gauge is used.
 It is also recommended to use the wagon for Diesel only, if petrol is used, safety
relief valve must be installed on the wagon.
 It is recommended to stencil each wagon based on the value obtain on the weigh
bridge scale.
