MICROSOFT
This time it is Microsoft's turn, it is a multinational company of American origin,
founded on April 4, 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen. Dedicated to the software and
hardware sector, it is based in Redmond, Washington, United States. Microsoft
develops, manufactures, licenses and produces software and electronic equipment,
with its most widely used products being the Microsoft Windows operating system
and the Microsoft Office suite, which have an important position among personal
computers. Bill Gates' strategy is "to have a workstation that works with our software
on every desk and in every home"
It is a company that has an international positioning, has managed to enter many
markets and from different segments, currently the Internet is a fundamental tool for
the daily activities of human beings, and we can say that a large number of people
at the worldwide consume products that have to do with technology, from
Smartphone, tablets, laptops, video game consoles, these devices have allowed
permanent communication between people regardless of distance and very low
prices. Microsoft has been one of the pioneering companies in the field of technology
and in its beginnings it was one of the most innovative companies with a very rapid
rise.
But Microsoft, having legal difficulties due to monopolistic practices, in 1997 the
Department of Justice accused Microsoft of violating the 1994 agreement by forcing
computer manufacturers who install Windows 95 to include Internet Explorer, a
program for surfing the Internet. The government said the company was taking
advantage of its position in the market for operating systems to gain control of
Internet browsers. Microsoft requested that it have the right to improve Windows
functionality by integrating Internet-related functions into the operating system. The
requests also required changes to some contracts and pricing policy.
The trial against Microsoft for violating antitrust laws began in October 1998.
Executives from Netscape, Sun and many other software and hardware companies
testified about their business contracts with Microsoft. In November 1999, the federal
court judge, after hearing the summoned witnesses, presented his findings and
stated that Microsoft had a monopoly on the operating systems market. In April 2000,
the judge issued the judgment against the company for violating antitrust laws and
tactical tactics that hindered competitiveness. Microsoft appealed the Judgment.
Microsoft is a company that in its boom times managed to make its way in the
markets worldwide, but from my perspective it has stagnated, it has not known how
to innovate and give a 360 ° turn to its products, they do not bet on new
developments , such is the case of Internet Explorer, in its beginning Microsoft was
a project that it did not believe profitable and I put it aside, until it had competition, in
its despair of competition it was winning the market they launched Internet Explorer
with many failures, and that was some of their main reasons for legal problems.
Microsoft's future will have a quite different being; since its new CEO has a totally
different vision of the company, where Microsoft Windows doesn't seem too
important anymore. What matters is artificial intelligence and the cloud, the two
fundamental legs of a strategy that wants to look to the future, almost forgetting a
platform that put Microsoft where it is now.
