What is IELTS?
IELTS, the International English Language
Testing System, is designed to assess the
language ability of candidates who need to
study or work where English is the language
of communication.
IELTS is jointly owned by University of
Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge
ESOL), British Council and IDP: IELTS
Australia. IELTS conforms to the highest
International Standards of language
assessment. It covers the four language skills
- Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
IELTS is recognised by Universities and
employers in many countries, including
Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and
USA. It is also recognised by professional
bodies, immigration authorities and other
government agencies.
IELTS is not recommended for candidates
under the age of 16. However if you wish to

Which Module - Academic
or General Training?
If you are intending to study or train through
the medium of English at undergraduate or
postgraduate level or applying to nursing/
medical councils, you should take the
Academic module (AC).
If you intend to go on to secondary
education, to undertake work experience or
a training programme (not at degree level)
or if you need to take IELTS for immigration
purposes, then you should take the General
Training module (GT).
This information serves as a guide only.
Candidate should check with the receiving
organisations about entry requirements,

How do I register?
To register for IELTS, you can avail one of
the following 2 options.
1. REGISTER ONLINE at British Council
offices or by visiting our website www.
britishcouncil.org/bangladesh
2. You can also register at Standard
Chartered booths or Registration
Points or booths located at Standard
Chartered Bank.
You will need the following for registration:
• Test fee – Tk.10,300
• Clear Photocopy of valid passport (pages
showing personal Identification details
and expiry date)
• 2 copies of a recent (6 months or less)
coloured passport-size photographs (with
no glasses, hats or caps. Photos must
not show anything covering the face,
outlines of the eyes, nose or mouth)
• Co mpleted application form
Test fee can be paid by cash/bank draft either
at the British Council or Registration Points
or at Standard Chartered booths at
by completing a British Council deposit slip.
You can drop your applivation with above
documents to one of our offices, Registration
Points or at the booths.

exam information 3/4 days before your Test
date. Information is also posted outside our

Please note that late arrivals are treated as
absent. Please also remember that you will
not be allowed to enter the exam room after

When is my speaking test?
Your speaking test may be held four days
before and after the test date or on the day
of test or within seven days of the test.
You should arrive at the speaking exam
venue at least 30 minutes before the start of
your speaking test. Please remember to
bring your valid passport.
If you do not receive your pre-exam
information for any reason just contact your
nearest British Council office or go to our
website (www.britishcouncil.org/bangladesh)
at least 3/4 days before your Testdate.

What do I need to bring on
the day of the test?
You need to bring the same valid passport
that you used at the time of registration.
Your passport will be treated as Admit Card
and should be kept on your desk throughout
the exam so that our venue staff can check
your ID any time.
Please also bring personal stationery - pencils,
pens, eraser, pencil sharpener and remember
that books, bags and mobile phones are
not allowed inside the exam hall.
When/How do I get my results?
Results are published on the 12th day after the
test date.
Your results will be available on our official
website www.britishcouncil.org/bangladesh.
You can also browse other exams information
on this site.
We will send your results to your mailing
address within 3-5 days after the result has
been published if you have requested for your
result to be courier.
If you prefer to collect your results from one of
our offices just let us know on the day of the
test. You will need to bring your passport
when you collect your results.
We are happy to send your Test Report Form
(TRF) to 5 different academic institutions,
government agencies, professional bodies or
employers free of charge via GPO if you have
made the request within 6 weeks of your test
date. A fee of Tk 500 per TRF will be
applicable after 6 weeks.
If you would like to send your result via DHL all
above rules will apply and additionally Tk 2500
will be charged per address for DHL cost.

What if I want to recheck
my results?
You can request an Enquiry on Result (EoR)
if you feel that your test results do not reflect
your performance in the test. After receiving
your request, your test scripts/records will be
sent to UK to be re-marked by Senior
Examiners. Just download an application
form from our website
(www.britishcouncil.org/bangladesh) or
contact your nearest British Council office to
find out more.
An EoR can only be made within six weeks
of the test date. Candidates should make
sure that the following complete set of
application documents arrives at the
Examinations Unit of the British Council
before the deadline:
• EoR Application Form
• Your original Test Report Form (TRF)
• Fees - Tk7400 (for one part of the test or
all parts of the test)
If your scores change to a higher band
after the EoR then:
• A new TRF will be issued to the candidate.
• A full refund will be made to the candidate
within a month of the new TRF being
issued.
If the scores do not change after the EOR
then
• The original TRF will be returned to the
candidate.
• There is no appeal after this re-mark. The
decision is final.
• This procedure takes six to eight weeks
to be completed

What if I want to cancel my
registration/get a refund?
What if I want to transfer or cancel my
registration/get a refund?
If candidates wish to cancel registration (refund)
or ask for transfer to a different date more than 5
weeks before the test date, the request will be
accepted at an additional fee of Tk 1500 for
transfer and Tk 1500 deducted from the test fee
for refund.
Candidates who seek to cancel their registration
or transfer test dates within 5 weeks prior to the
test date will only receive a refund or transfer
based on the following:
• Serious illness e.g. hospital admission or
serious injury (Does not include minor illness
such as a mild cold)
• Loss or bereavement - death of a close family
member
• Hardship/ trauma victim of crime, victim of a
traffic accident
• Military service
Candidates must lodge an application for refund
or transfer no later than 5 working days after the
test date with the appropriate documentation or
evidence. Acceptable documents may include
medical test diagnosis report from relevant
medical institutions, death certificate or a police
report.
Candidates will be informed about the status of
the application within 2 working days.
Refund: If the candidate’s application is
approved, the centre will refund the test fee,
deducting an administrative fee of Tk 1500, to a
nominated bank account by the candidate.
Transfer: If the candidate’s application is approved,
candidates must select a test date within the next 3
month period and this will be approved by the test
centre depending on availability for the selected test
date. Candidates who wish to transfer to a test date
more than 3 months away should apply for a refund
and then reapply for the test

British Council offer?
1. IELTS One-day workshops for
Registered Candidates
These workshops offer a 6 hour
introduction to the exam and covers:
exam technique, format, tips, practice.
Dates are available at any of our offices.
2. Wireless headphone sound system for
listening tests
British Council is the only test centre in
Bangladesh that offers state of the art
wireless headphones for listening tests.
3. Mock tests
These mock tests provide candidates with
valuable exam practice for the Listening
and Reading modules, which gives them
some ideas of their ability in these skills.
These tests are marked by University of
Cambridge and results are available
within two weeks.
4. Preparation Classes
Through our Teaching Centre you can
also take an IELTS preparation course,
designed for candidates who wish to
study abroad or emigrate.
