Non-Japanese speaking guests
that come to this hotel at the Huis
Ten Bosch theme park in Sasebo,
Nagasaki prefecture, are greeted by
an English-speaking receptionist in
the form of a mean looking minia-
ture dinosaur. Those that speak Jap-
anese, on the other hand, can talk to
a female humanoid which at a dis-
tance, can pass for a human being.
Both receptionists offer the same
option to the guests: “If you want to
check in, push one.” Visitors have to
press a button on a small kiosk on
the front desk and type in informa-
tion on a touch-panel screen. Guests
are then given the room keys which
are activated by storing a digital
robot.

luggage, instead, a robot trolley can
take your cargo straight to the room
and show you the way at the same
time. Inside the room, information
and amenities are provided by Tuly, a
toy-like robot which provides answers
to typical tourist questions (“Where
is the nearest restaurant?”) and turns
the room lights on/off since there are
no switches on the walls. Not to have
humans in the building does not mean
that guests can do anything they want.
All the public areas and robot activi-

and some services like cleaning, still

MO, the world’s most advanced hu-
manoid robot and developed by the
Honda’s Wako Fundamental Techni-
cal Research Center. For 10 years
since 2005 ASIMO hosted a show
called ‘Say ‘Hello’ to Honda’s ASI-
MO’ as part of the Innoventions at-
traction in Tomorrowland at Disney-
land in Anaheim. The attraction was
removed last year to make room for
new robot-inspired characters from
the Star Wars saga. The new devel-
opment is probably the largest ever
by Disney and information such as
opening date and exact details have
not been released.

robot conceived to interact with humans. For many years ASIMO
had his own show at the Innoventions attraction in Tomorrowland at
Disneyland in Anaheim. The attraction was removed recently to make
room for a new breed of robots: characters from the Star Wars saga.

prevedeva centri universitari e laboratori
di ricerca e sviluppo dedicati alla robotica,
nonché residenze e un mall. Il progetto,

clude robots, X-wing fighters, walk-
ers, androids and Stormtroopers. “In
these all-new lands, guests will be
transported to a never-before-seen
planet inhabited by humanoids,
droids and many others,” according
to the official Disney blog.
Star Wars will not be the first
project of a theme park with robot
characters. Two years ago national
and local governments, as well as
private developers in South Korea
pledged about USD 625 million to
create Robot Land, the world’s first
theme park devoted to robotics and
artificial intelligence and based on

family, the plan also included
a graduate school for robotics,
R&D lab, as well as residential
complex, retail center and con-
dominium. The projects, 30km
from Seoul and 15 minutes from
the Incheon airport, was due to
open this year but as of today
there are no news about the work
in progress and the website name
is apparently for sale.
The best chances, therefore,
to see robots interacting with
humans are still in the movies,
though with mixed reviews.
‘Tomorrowland: A World Be-

that viewers will identify as Disney
World. Despite Clooney being one
of the main characters, the movie
received mixed reviews and barely

quando i robot iniziano a sviluppare
una coscienza artificiale e si rivoltano
contro gli umani. La serie è stata de-
scritta come “un’odissea oscura relati-
va all’alba della coscienza artificiale e
al futuro del peccato’. La serie televi-
siva è inoltre ispirata al film del 1973
di Michael Crichton avente lo stesso
titolo (in italiano,‘Il mondo dei robot’).
Fino a che i robot non interagiran-
no con gli esseri umani in spazi pubblici
come quelli di un parco a tema, i mana-
ger possono decisamente contare su
robot per operazioni di logistica dietro le
quinte. Nei magazzini, ad esempio, i ro-
bot possono pressoché completamente
rimpiazzare gli esseri umani. Modex negli
Usa e Hannover Messe in Europa sono
le principali fiere internazionali nel settore
dell’automazione industriale e si tengono
entrambe ad aprile. I due appuntamen-
ti hanno offerto una finestra su quanto i
robot sono già in grado di fare in ambito
di produzione, assemblaggio e distribu-
zione.
Amazon ad esempio ha una flotta di
più di 15 mila robot prodotti da Kiva Sy-
stems, una società che Amazon ha com-

bots. However, things turn sour when the robots
begin to develop an artificial conscience and turn
against humans. Described as “a dark odyssey
about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the
future of sin” the TV series is based on Michael
Crichton’s 1973 feature film of the same title.

Until robots can fully interact with humans in

the public spaces of a theme park, managers can
definitely rely on robots for logistic operations
behind the curtains. In large warehouses, in fact,
robots can almost completely replace the human
workers. Modex in the USA and the Hannover
Messe in Europe are the largest trade shows that
take place in April and offer a window of what
robots are already able to accomplish, from ma-
terial handling to logistics across manufacturing,
assembly and distribution.
Amazon for example has a fleet of over 15,000
robot workers manufactured by Kiva Systems, a
company that Amazon purchased in 2012. Each
robot can move hundreds of pounds of goods in a
few seconds, for extended time, without sweating
and contributing to the company bottom line.
Many similar robots of all shapes and sizes

dove serve un tocco leggero e preciso come ad esempio
l’assemblaggio di orologi o tablet.
Alcune di queste tecnologie sono già state conver-
tite in attrazioni per parchi di divertimenti già molti anni

could thread a needle.
Some of these technologies have
already been converted into attrac-
tions for amusement parks way be-
fore robots were trendy. Robocoast-
er for example is probably the first
example of a robotic arm normally
used in manufacturing industries
that has been converted into a theme
park attraction. It consists of a mul-
tiple-seated chair attached to an alu-
minum robotic arm normally used to
lift car engines in large automobile
factories. The arm’s joints allow it
to move in any direction and, using
a touchscreen, riders can build their
own thrills, choosing among barrel
rolls, corkscrews and inversions.

The interaction with robots is not
limited to warehouses and theme
parks. Last month Spencer showed
up for his first day of work at the Am-
sterdam airport after several months
of tests and trials. Spencer is a ro-
bot whose job is to direct travelers
to the right gate for departure. The
robot is equipped with an embedded
digital map of the airport and with
sensors that allow him to determine
his surroundings as well as how far
objects and people are from him. On
the other side of the world, travelers
to Japan that, for example, stayed at
the Henn-na Hotel in Nagasaki and
have a return ticket with Japan Air-

Tulips, windmills, canals and quiet villages
from northern Europe are the major inspirations
for the Huis Ten Bosch park in Japan which takes
its name also from one of the royal palaces in the
Dutch capital of the Hague. Now, more robots will
become part of the scenery.
After the popularity of the robot-staffed Henn-na
Hotel, which added 72 more rooms since it opened
in 2015, the theme park will soon include a new
area enterily populated with robots. It will include

Saranno ancora tulipani, mulini
a vento, canali e tranquilli paesaggi
nordeuropei, ma anche sempre più
ultramoderni robot. Dopo il successo
del suo albergo robotico Henn-na Hotel
aperto nel luglio 2015 e ampliato di
recente con l’aggiunta di 72 camere, il
parco giapponese Huis Ten Bosch che
ha come tema portante l’Olanda più
classica – il suo stesso nome deriva
da una delle residenze reali d’Olanda,
a L’Aia – aprirà quest’estate un’intera
area dedicata agli automi.
The Kingdom of Robots
comprenderà principalmente un
ristorante con chef, baristi e camerieri
androidi, e un museo in cui i visitatori
potranno interagire con i robot e capire
il ruolo positivo che questi possono
avere nella nostra vita quotidiana.
Secondo le intenzioni della proprietà
l’area sarà anche uno strumento
con cui l’industria internazionale
potrà ampliare il proprio know-how in
materia. Tra le aziende che forniranno
i robot, Denso, Sharp e Yaskava
Electric.
