The Volunteer Experience

The Volunteer Career Portfolio

ƒ A portfolio is a file where you maintain a permanent record of your
volunteer service and documentation. This file should grow with you.

ƒ A portfolio can serve two major purposes:

1. To keep track of what you have done, when you did it, skills learned or developed, and your
achievements.
2. To have a single place where you keep any work samples, awards, and documentation which
demonstrate your professional abilities.

ƒ What should I place in my portfolio?

The following are just suggestions to assist you in getting started:
1. Position descriptions from volunteer positions.
2. Samples of any of your volunteer work accomplishments. For example, reports,
correspondence, databases, brochures, newsletters.
3. Letters of Recommendation.
4. Thank You letters for any work you performed.
5. Examples of public recognition, awards, and commendations.
6. Any newspaper, magazine, or newsletter articles mentioning your name and achievement.
7. Record of any speaking engagements or briefings that you have given. For example, date of
briefing, audience, and topic.
