APPLICATION OF CULTURAL EXPRESSION IN RELEVANCE WITH

DIGITAL ENVIRONMENT

INTRODUCTION :

“Architecture belongs to culture, not to civilization” - ALVAR AALTO

India is a diverse country, a land that is visibly prominent in its people, culture and their
traditions which varies like its vast geography. People speak in different languages, dress differently, follow
different religions, eat different food but are of the same behaviour. So, whether it is a joyous occasion or a
moment of grief, people participate wholeheartedly, feeling the happiness or pain reflecting their cultural
expressions. About 10% of the population’s daily activities are determined by the culture they belong to.
Culture has not only played its role in lifestyles of people but also the spaces they live in. In other words,
culture has always formed its special identity in the essence of architecture that shapes a building.

Architecture as a need of human life reflects the culture in every society interacting closely
with structural, historical, political, economic and social features of the society. Changing the cultural and
social attitudes in communities has the greatest impact on the architecture. Art and architecture are of the
most important symptoms and characteristics of each nation and every historical period that indicate the
environment human’s lives at any time. Elaborating the expression of culture on the built form creates an
additive essence to the building. Despite the strong impact of westernization in architecture in India, local
culture continues to inspire architects to design by adopting and merging the elements of both worlds
together.
Dancing is a form of artistic expression in all aspects of culture. Dance styles are
closely tied to the cultures in which they develop, and they change over time in correspondence to changing
society. Dance is also an evolving language. Every gesture and move has its own history and cultural
derivation. A wave, a handshake, a thumbs-up etc; these can all be thought of as forms of dance used in
everyday life. The way we move and communicate with our hands and bodies is both an expression of our
culture and our identity.
The research would dig into understand the relevance cultural expression that help in
framing the architectural spaces where even a lame person could sense the space.

NEED FOR THE STUDY:

- When we deeply look into understanding culture as an entity for spaces, especially the spaces of dance ,
is it not necessary to know culture in tradition forms or whether it works in this digital world?
-Only traditional methods can make the cultural expression work well?
-In the contemporary digital world will traditional methods work?
-Here comes the solution to this. For example, people have many needs in the ancient times to satisfy
themselves where as at present, in this machinery world why can’t they shift to the comfortable digital
environment.
-Digital environment is the advancement technology in the present scenario, is it not necessary that one
goes with technology, or yet maintain the culture. Can this be done ? Then how?
-What will be the need of integration of culture especially in relevance with art and architecture?
AIM:

The aim is to establish a necessity between cultural expression and digital environment in relevance with art
and architecture.

OBJECTIVE:

-To understand the space utilization with proper function reflecting art and architecture.
-To analyse the digital solutions and their techniques.
-To integrate the cultural expression in designing spaces.
-To understand the factors that resemblance art and architecture.

SCOPE:

The study would provide a scope for identifying various cultural aspects in relevance with art and
architecture and also to identify role of cultural expression in the digital world by comparing conventional
and traditional practices. This would help to understand like how well the cultural expression could fit into
the digital world in the contemporary era.

LIMITATIONS:

-The research would not go in detail with the structural aspects.

-The research would concentrate up to only the comparative statement.
-Design guidelines may be accordingly concluded in relevance with culture and architecture.
