2.3 Link Planner software

cnReach system release 01-20 is supported by LINKPlanner 4.7.4 or later. In 4.7.4, the cnReach
N500 is marked as preliminary for 900, 700, 450 and 220 MHz bands and only available point-to-
point applications. In future LINKPlanner releases, support for point to multipoint topologies will

2.4 User guide

cnReach N500 Series User Guide System Release 01-20, phn-4673 001v000.

3 NEW FEATURES
3.1 Auto Configure
The auto configure feature significantly simplifies deployment of end points in PMP and PTP
networks. Turning on auto configure in an AP and EP allows the EP to automatically discover most
settings relevant to the air interface. With auto-configure enabled, the EP only has to have the
following set: Network ID, Device ID, Link with ID and for licensed bands the AP transmit
frequency. All other settings related to establishing an over-the-air connection are then
automatically discovered, including: modulation modes, network radius, hop patterns, etc.

This simplifies and reduces errors in making sector-wide configuration changes as all changes only
need to be made at the AP.

3.2 MODBUS TCP to MODBUS RTU Bridge

Adds the ability to bridge MODBUS TCP traffic to MODBUS RTU traffic and vice versa. In many
cases this can eliminate the need for an external MODBUS TCP to RTU conversion module.

3.3 Spectrum Analyzer

A real-time spectrum analyzer is now available with four different visualizations. Network
administrators can view the current noise levels and a waterfall view of recent interference levels
amongst other views. Note that the spectrum analyzer takes the radio out of service while active.

3.4 Quality of Service

cnReach now supports three levels of QoS. QoS is based on the TOS bits in the IP header of each
packet. TOS bits on incoming packets are honored and assigned to one of three priority levels. By
default traffic generated on the radio by the TCP to serial services has the TOS bits set to highest
priority.

3.5 IO Configuration and Operation Improvements

Significant enhancements have been made to how the optional built-in Analog/Digital IO operates:

• New GUI for setting per-channel configurations

• Fixes to user calibrated analog inputs

• Fixes to unsigned analog voltage registers

• Changed port numbering to 1-8 for usability vs. the original zero to 7.

• Improvements to counters and edge-polarity detection

3.6 New Serial Modes

The Radio settings page now allows the user to set one of four serial modes in addition to
Ethernet mode. These Serial modes put the radio into a serial-only configuration and
Ethernet traffic will no longer be passed over the air. These features can be useful when
using narrow channels on licensed bands where payload capacity is at a premium and over-
the-air management and Ethernet traffic can be sacrificed. The four new modes are Serial
RAW, Seamless Serial RAW, Serial Message and Seamless Serial Message. The ‘Message’
modes attempt to preserve natural breaks in MODBUS RTU style communications where the
‘Raw’ modes do not look for breaks in the traffic. Seamless modes allow the radio to join as
seamless serial group sharing an air interface with other serial radios as well as a mixture of
Ethernet radios.

3.7 Access via ssh or telnet are user configurable

Via the GUI, system administrators can enable or disable ssh and telnet command line
access. There are a few limited command line options available via ssh/telnet and now the
administrator can determine whether they should be available or not.

3.8 GUI Improvements

• ISM channels sizes are listed alongside the modulation modes

• GUI prevents the user from selecting invalid packet sizes and modulation mode
combinations including selecting more than four modulations and selecting
modulations with more than 15x capacity differences.

• Some fields have moved from the RF settings to the Network settings page for a more
logical organization.

• Several improvements to value checking input parameters

• Display of certain measurements and results on diagnostic tools

3.9 Updates to ssh

A new version of ssh has been added that:

• Enforces minimum key lengths for DSA

• Adds support for RSA and ECDSA

• Radio generates PER RADIO host key.

• RSA and DSA with long keys can take several minutes to establish a connection.

3.10 Issues or problems addressed in this release

In addition to many other minor enhancements and fixes, the following items previously reported
as open issues have been resolved.

3.10.1 TX RATE AND RX RATE ON RF STATISTICS ARE NOT ACCURATE

The Tx Rate and Rx Rate values in this report do not accurately reflect link capacity.

3.10.2 TCP TERMINAL SERVER CAN POINT TO THE WRONG SERIAL PORT
When configuring serial port two as a TCP terminal server, the serial stream can appear
mistakenly on serial port one. The work-around is to configure serial port one as the
terminal server and use serial port two for management interface.

3.10.3 DUAL RADIO MODULES CANNOT BE CONFIGURED AS STORE-AND-FORWARD REPEATERS (ONLY

AS BACK TO BACK REPEATER)
The dual radio cnReach modules can only be configured as back-to-back repeaters using both
radios. Only the single radio module can operate as a single-radio store-and-forward
repeater.

3.10.4 SELECTING ‘GENERATE CONFIGURATION FILE’ REQUIRES A REBOOT OF THE RADIO TO MAKE THE
GENERATED FILE VISIBLE
If you delete the current configuration file and the then request the radio to generate a
configuration file for download, it requires a reboot of the radio to be able to see the newly
generated configuration file for downloading.

4 KNOWN PROBLEMS OR LIMITATIONS

4.1.1 CHANGING THE IP ADDRESS REQUIRES USER TO FIRST SAVE AND THEN COMMIT
After changing the unit’s IP address, the user must first click save and then after the GUI
indicates saving is complete, click commit. Clicking commit without first clicking save can
lead to the new IP address not being committed.

4.1.2 RE-LOGGING INTO A RADIO FROM A PC DOESN’T ALWAYS REQUIRE LOGIN CREDENTIALS TO BE
RE-ENTERED WHEN CONNECTING FROM THE SAME PC.
After logging into a radio from a PC and then re-booting the radio and logging in again from
the SAME PC, the radio doesn’t always present a credential challenge to the user.

4.1.3 NEIGHBOR LIST DOESN’T ALWAYS POPULATE

The neighbor list doesn’t always populate or can populate very slowly. Performing an RF
Ping will force the neighbor list to update.

4.1.4 SPECTRUM ANALYZER DOESN’T ALWAYS DISPLAY PROPERLY ON MICROSOFT BROWSERS

When using Microsoft Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge to view the GUI, the spectrum
analyser doesn’t always display properly. Google Chrome or Firefox are recommended.

4.1.5 SUPPORT FOR 4W TX POWER ON 900 MHZ LICENSED BAND RADIOS

In licensed MAS operation in the 900 MHz band, some older radios are limited to 3W
transmit power. Contact Cambium support for a patch file to allow the full 4W transmit
power supported by the hardware. All new production since February 2018 supports 4W
MAS operation by default. Note that 900 MHz ISM mode is limited to 1W by FCC regulations.

5 SUGGESTIONS FOR FIRST-TIME USERS

The following are suggestions for doing your first link in a proof-of-concept or bench
evaluations. Also see the user guide for much more information.

1. For cabled environments or when using the whip or duck antennas, additional
attenuation of 20 dB should be inserted on each antenna port.
2. Radios should be separated by at least 10 feet (3 meters) to achieved optimal
performance (highest modulations)
3. Tx power should be set to at least 100 mW to achieve QAM modulations.
4. RSSI should be weaker than -40 dBm to avoid overloading and distorting receiver.
5. After power-cycling or re-booting the radio, wait for unit to completely finish the boot
sequence before making configuration changes. Check for the radio serial numbers to
display on the main webpage.
