1858 in New York City. As a young child, Roosevelt was very sick and had asthma. Despite always being sick, he loved to go outside. Theodore went to Harvard University, and then he studied law at Columbia University. After college he began his career in politics. A few years later he took a break to be a cowboy out west. In 1898, Theodore fought in the Spanish- American War. He formed a volunteer calvary regiment known as the “Rough Riders”. Theodore Roosevelt was a war hero. After the war, Theodore was elected governor of New York. Then, in 1900 he became Vice-President. President McKinley was assassinated a year later, and Roosevelt became the 26th president of the United States. One thing Roosevelt was passionate about was protecting the land and animals in the United States. He did not want the beauty of the West to be ruined by buildings so, as President, he created the National Parks System. President Roosevelt died in 1919 due to his bad health.
