What are fugitive Emissions
• Any escape of Hydrocarbon gas
• Any impact on the environment
• Reduced emissions benefits plant
safety
• Reduced emissions benefits the
environment and reduces risk of
‘Global warming’

Schlumberger-Private
Indian Industry and Fugitive
emissions
• Currently lagging international requirements
for reduced FE emissions
• Industry has many valves with FE issues
especially from Stem packings
• Some progress in certain areas especially in
sour or corrosive processes

Industry Needs - Customer Perspective
62% of uncontrolled fugitive
 Valves dominate the uncontrolled fugitive emissions (62%) for a typical facility
(Per EPA) emissions is attributed to leakage
 Consent decrees driving customers to request 5 year packing replacement from valves
guarantee or FE compliant certificates

 Non-compliance to consent decree FE leakage levels invoke fines/unplanned

shutdowns for the customers

 Leak Detection and Repair programs (LDAR) by customers drive valve vendors
to provide FE compliant certs even for replacement packings ---- Typical Consent Decree Language
 Customer specifications for valves increasingly demanding FE certifications for
valves at full pressure-temperature rating
Valve manufacturers that do not meet
low emission definitions might lose
market share

Project Vision
To enhance fugitive emissions (FE) capabilities of the Valve product line to maintain
technology leadership in rising stem valves (RSV) market

Project Description & Goals

 Industry’s first ISO 15848-1 certified RSV to meet the Fugitive Emissions
requirements at its temperature limits (400C & -50C)

 Achieve FE compliance with the most stringent test medium allowed (Helium)

 Qualify all pressure classes (CL150-2500)

 Upgrade key sealing elements driving FE performance & fire safe compliance

 Maintain valve longevity & reliability at higher cycles while offering FE

enhancements

 Use packing qualified to API 622 or equiv. (Certificates required)

Summary – Closing remarks
• Industry requires Low FE quality and reliability
• Specification and legislation will drive product in meeting these
demands
• Non compliant product will expect to lose market share
• End users and EPCs should expect to pay a premium with medium to
long term payback from upfront investments
