Reality Models
Last updated: October 17, 2018
Overview
A Reality Model is a Point Cloud (POD), ContextCapture Reality Mesh (3MX) or Scalable Mesh (3SM) or Web ready
Scalable Mesh. ContextCapture Editor provides tools to perform various operations on point clouds and reality
meshes. ContextCapture Editor tools can be found in the Reality Modeling work ow of the application's ribbon.
Tools that strictly support point clouds can also be found in the Point Clouds dialog.
CAUTION: Take note that the present documentation only covers the tools that are speci c to ContextCapture Editor. For information about all other
Point Cloud menus and menu items, please refer to the Point Cloud dialog section in the MicroStation documentation.

De ne Class tool
Any point cloud stored in a POD format can have up to 256 classes to structure the point cloud data. In a POD
le those classes are only de ned by an identi er between 0 and 255. In order to manipulate those classes in a
meaningful way, ContextCapture Editor de nes those classes with a name and a color. This way point cloud
classes can be manipulated and understood by di erent tools. Class de nition in a DGN acts as a dictionary
de ning how to interpret and display the classes. The Class De nitions tab is used to create new classes, delete
existing and import classes from other DGN les.
Class de nitions are part of the DGN le and not the point cloud. It is possible to attach a point cloud which has
points in classes not explicitly de ned in the current DGN le. If that is the case then those classes will be shown
as Unde ned Classes. The Unde ned Classes entry cannot be deleted.
Portions of the point cloud are assigned to di erent classes using the classi cation tool. In the point cloud le,
only an identi er is associated with the point. So it is possible for two DGN les with the same point cloud
attached to show two di erent class names.
Used to reclassify user de ned parts of the point cloud according to de ned criteria.

Clips Tools
Clips are named regions that are used to restrict the display of the point cloud to enhance viewing. Clips can be
used in boundary mode to isolate certain parts of the cloud. This aids in modeling as only the area of interest is
displayed. Clips can also be used in mask mode to display all of the point cloud except the speci ed region.
Mask mode aids in hybrid work ows where part of the cloud should not be displayed because a new 3D model
is being integrated into the project.
Point cloud clips apply only to the selected point clouds. View clips apply to everything in the view.
Create Clip

Section Tools
A section de nes a cross section through the reality model that is isolated in a target view. The section can be
moved and rotated with the section controls or standard manipulate commands.
The target view is oriented to show the reality model at the section. The ACS is oriented to be parallel to the
view so any drawing in that view will happen on the section plane.
The section is along a plane and therefore does not have thickness. The thickness value clips the reality model
in front of and behind the section plane to show a larger segment of the reality model. In this sense it clips the
reality model in the target view.
The section indicator is a temporary element that is placed on the active level with the active symbology. A good
practice would be to create a separate level for reality model sections so they can be turned o as required.

3. Add any constraints using the Create Constraint tool. A constraint will associate one or more vertices with
a master vertex. When you move the master vertex, the other vertices will follow. Each
individualvertexcan be moved on its own. Constraints are useful when modeling a feature that is constant
on one side and variable on another, such as road crown and cross fall (constant) and a ditch (variable).
Use the CTRL key to select multiple vertices.

Used to export selected point clouds into a series of les according to a de ned set of arbitrary planar shapes
or 3D slabs de ned with a geometry type Solid. Draw the shapes or slabs with standard MicroStation tools and
include text inside the shape (on the same plane) or the 3D slabs. It is recommended to draw the shapes or
slabs on a separate level for simplicity
In case of shape elements the 3D extent considered is the orthogonal extrusion of the planar shapes (bounded
by the point cloud extent).
In case of Slabs, the 3D extent is simply the extent of the slab. Slab geometry can be easily modi ed using
handles on the elements but push/pull operations should be avoided since the Solid will be converted to
SmartSolids which are not recognized by the tool.
To be a valid tile, the shape must be coplanar and the text de ning the lename must be on the polygon surface
(i.e. if drawn from a top view the polygon and text must be at the same elevation).
A good way to easily create valid shapes with lenames is to rst set the right active depth and next to disable
accusnap (or snapping on point cloud) before drawing any shape and placing the text.

Select Intensity
1. Make sure the point cloud display is set to Intensity. It is often helpful to set the point cloud display to a line weight
of 2 to better display the intensity values.
2. Adjust the intensity values to show the features to digitize. Often it is easiest to set the highest intensity value and
then adjust the lowest intensity until the correct features are displayed.
The intensity values can be adjusted as the process continues to compensate for variations in intensity in the point
cloud.
3. Adjust the various length settings to suit your data. Examples are shown below for paint lines on a road. In the
diagram below, 2 would be the maximum line width and 23 would be the gap jumping distance.
4. Select a start point at the beginning of the line to follow. Points will be recognized and segments placed along the

2. Use the Append tool to add a template to the project. The template will be placed in the section view
3. Move the section into placeon the point cloud. Adjust any vertices as required. When adjusting the master
vertex, the slave vertices will follow.
5. Section will automatically move forward by the distance speci ed in Forward step. Continue adding
template copies. Preview the results with the Preview Loft tool.
6. When all templates are placed for the area being modeled, select Generate.
The de ned graphic elements will be created and the project removed.
Quickly sets the density or weight of the attached point clouds to various settings.
Used to select key points such as the lowest, highest, average or median point along a user de ned path. For
example, nd the peak line along a road centerline.
This utility works in conjunction with AccuSnap and uses the point found by AccuSnap as the center of the
search area. The search area is a cylinder de ned by three parameters : its center (i.e. where AccuSnap snaps),
its height and its radius.
Each time AccuSnap snaps on a point, all points inside this cylinder are analyzed based on the method selected
and the result is applied to move the cursor. The methods can be grouped in two categories, the ones which will
change the 3D location of the points along the three axis (Highest Point and Lowest Point) and the ones that will
a ect only its depth along the direction (Highest Depth, Lowest Depth, Median Depth and Average Depth). The
below illustration expresses this di erence, the yellow cross represents the initial point snapped with AccuSnap

and the green cylinder represents the search area centered on the initial point. In this case we simulate the
usage of 2 methods: Highest Point (red point is found and returned) and Highest Depth (red point is found,
project on the cylinder axis to compute the returned blue point). The same concept of reprojecting or not the
result on the cylinder axis applies to other methods.

and
Depth
Smart Snap searches for points inside the search cylinder and locates the key point based on
the settings.
Lowest Point — nd the lowest point in the search cylinder and move the cursor to the
point location.
Highest Point — nd the highest point in the search cylinder and move the cursor to the
point location.
Lowest Depth — nd the lowest point in the search cylinder and move the cursor to be
at the same depth (along the Direction) as the found point.
Highest Depth — nd the highest point in the search cylinder and move the cursor to be
at the same depth (along the Direction) as the found point.
Average Depth — compute the average depth along the direction of all the points inside
the search cylinder and move the cursor to the computed depth.
Median Depth — compute the median depth along the direction of all the points inside
the search cylinder and move the cursor to the computed depth.

Visual Explorer assists the user in understanding point cloud data. It recolors points around the cursor based on
the cursors location and direction.
Visual Explorer helps users to understand, within a single view and without rotating, how the points are
organized and provides analysis such as:
Are there points around the cursor almost at the same depth?
The cursor acts as a bidirectional light source which highlights points that are forward and backward with a
di erent color.
Flashlight mode
Cross Section mode attaches a 3D cylinder to the cursor. The cylinder is divided into three parts:
Visual Explorer can be used to display a section of the point cloud by using Cross Section mode and aligning the
proper on plane thickness. In the example below, points inside the cylinder are recolored in green and points
on the same plane as the cursor (plane perpendicular to the pointer direction) are recolored in red. The Visual
Explorer gives the e ect of a dynamic cross section as the cursor moves through the point cloud. The edge of the
sidewalk is then easy to recognize and locate.
The Flashlight mode is an analogy of manipulating a real ashlight (actually two, one looking forward and the
second looking backward). Two cones representing the ashlight beam are attached to the cursor. Points inside
the forward and backward cones are recolored in real time.
Flashlight mode can be used to visualize/analyze a Point Cloud. Since the analogy with a real ashlight is intuitive
it provides a perception of depth from a single view point. When the cursor is far from the surface the
highlighted area is large. As the cursor approaches the point cloud surface the size of the highlighted area is
reduced. Since there are two ashlights attached to the cursor (colorzing in two colors, ex: green and red) it is
easy to visualize if the point cloud surface is in front of or behind the cursor.
The following illustration shows the ashlight with the display cone enabled moving forward toward the surface.
In this case, the user does not snap on the point cloud but uses the ashlight to move and highlight the cursor in
3D.
The direction of the Visual Explorer and the default cursor depth (when not used with AccuSnap) can be set by
using the Change Visual Explorer tool accessible to the right of the Visual Explorer toolbar.
