STEPS FOR PLANNING THE INTERACTIVE ORAL BASED ON LISTENING

1. GET IN GROUPS OF 4.
2. CHOOSE ONE OF THE CORE TOPICS AND ONE SUBTOPIC

Core
There are three topics in the core.
• Communication and media
• Global issues
• Social relationships

These three topics are compulsory at SL and HL. Students are required to study at
least two aspects from each core topic.

Communication and media
How people interact, transmit and gather data for the purposes of information and
entertainment.
Possible aspects to cover:

• advertising
• bias in media
• censorship
• internet
• mail
• press
• radio and television
• sensationalism in media
• telephone.

Global issues

Current matters and future scenarios that have an impact at a regional, national
and/or international level, bearing in mind that they need to be addressed from the
perspective of the target language’s culture(s).

Possible aspects to cover:

• drugs
• energy reserves
• food and water
• global warming, climate change, natural disasters
• globalization
• international economy
• migration (rural–urban, or international)
• poverty and famine
• racism, prejudice, discrimination
• the effect of man on nature
• the environment and sustainability

Social relationships

How people interrelate and behave—as members of a community, individually and


in groups.
Possible aspects to cover:

• celebrations, social and religious events


• educational system
• language and cultural identity, or self-identity
• linguistic dominance
• minorities
• multilingualism
• nationalism, patriotism, fanaticism
• relationships (friendship, work, family)
• social and/or political structures
• social behaviours and stances
• taboos versus what is socially acceptable.

3. FIND AN AUDIO THAT HAS TO DO WITH THE CHOSEN CORE TOPIC


(Tv news, song, debate, film,etc…)

4. THINK OF AN ORAL ACTIVITY TO PERFORM

The following are some examples of group or pair activities.

 A discussion of an article or news item


 A talk show
 A TV news show
 Panel of experts
 A role play that may involve some element of decision-making or problem-solving
 A discussion on the possible conclusion of a film or television programme
 A role-play interview between a character from a work of fiction and a student

5. CHOOSE AN ENGLISH SPEAKING COUNTRY FOR HAVING MORE


INFORMATION ABOUT THE CHOSEN CORE TOPIC (STATISTICS,
HYSTORICAL FACTS, CURRENT EXAMPLES, QUOTE AUTHORITIES)

6. WRITE THE SCRIPT IN WHICH YOU TALK ABOUT THE CORE TOPIC
(SUBTOPIC)
7. USE COMPLEX SENTENCES, IDIOMATIC EXPRESSIONS, DIFFERENT
TENSES, TAG QUESTIONS, WH- QUESTIONS, YES-NO QUESTIONS,
VOCABULARY YOU FOUND IN THE READINGS

8. THERE MUST BE A “PROBLEM” , A SOLUTION , A REFLECTION

9. TIME: 15 MINUTES

10. WEAR CLOTHES, ACCESSORIES…

11. REMEMBER READING IS NOT ALLOWED
