~Perform arithmetic operations on polynomials
~Understand that polynomials form a system analogous to
the integers
~Perform operations of addition and subtraction
Bell Ringer: (5 min.)
-What is a polynomial? And give an example.
(go over bell work and collect while passing out notes)
Lesson: (25 min.)
-Add polynomials
-Subtract polynomials
Stations: (20 min.)
-Station practice with guided practice in groups provided by
teacher (put students together based on skill level)
Homework: (10 min.)
-If students finish stations early, they can start on homework
and whatever they don’t finish will be taken home.
Materials:
-pencil or pen
-guided note

Differentiation
Bell Ringer:
This activity is only a formative, and therefore will not affect the
students' grades in any way, and will only be a reference for me (the
teacher) to know where they are skill wise at this stage.
Guided Notes:
The differentiation during this stage will depend on the student
themselves, and what their IEPs or 504 plan required for them. I will have
specified notes available for these students, whether they be larger font,
already filled out, differently formatted or anything else a student might
need.
Guided Notes: Visual Learner and Logical Learner
Station: Aural (can listen to music) and Verbal
Homework: Solitary learner (can work by themselves)
Stations Activity:
The differentiation method I will be using for this activity is very
simple. Each “station” or “level” will be made up of different skilled
questions, getting considerable harder as the student advances.
Therefore each student can take their time on the stations, working at a
pace that is appropriate to them.
Guided Notes: Polynomial application

I CAN…
~Perform arithmetic operations on polynomials
~Understand that polynomials form a system
analogous to the integers
~Perform operations of addition and subtraction
Arithmetic with polynomials:
(DO WE REMEMBER YESTERDAY'S LESSON ON POLYNOMIALS?)
Addition - To add polynomials, add like terms (terms with the same variable part)
Ex. (4x^2 + 5x + 9) + (3x^2 + 5x + 1)
Method 1: (Vertical Method): Write the polynomial in standard form and line up like terms.
4x^2 + 5x + 9
3x^2 + 5x + 1
________________ = 7x^2 + 10x + 10
Method 2: (Horizontal Method): Find the like terms and add them.
(4x^2 + 3x^2) + (5x + 5x) + (9 + 1) = 7x^2 + 10x + 10
Method 3: (Mental math): using the distributive method to solve
(4x^2 + 5x + 9) + (3x^2 + 5x + 1)
*The “+” sign gets distributed to every number inside the
parenthesis*
= 7x^2 + 10x +10
(ASK STUDENTS IF THEY CAN THINK OF ANOTHER METHOD)
Ex 1. (5x^2 + 4x + 2) + (7x^2 + 9x + 3)
Ex 2. (2x^3 - 5x^2 + 8x + 6) + (2x^3 + 10x^2 + 3x + 6)
Ex 3. (3x^3 - 3x^2 + 4x^2 + 1) + (2x^3 + x^2 - 5x + 8)
(DOES ANYONE NEED HELP UNDERSTANDING?)
Subtraction - to subtract polynomials, a
dd the o
pposite
Method 1: (Vertical Method): Write the polynomial in standard form and line up like terms.
5x^2 + 6x + 3
-3x^2 - 4x - 2
________________ = (2x^2 + 2x + 1)
Method 2: (Horizontal Method): Find the like terms and add them. Add the opposite.
Ex 3. (5x^3 - 9x^2 - 6x + 3) - (2x^2 + 5x^2 + 4x - 6)
Put it all together:
(HOW DOES ALL OF THIS CONNECT?)
*Reminder: There will be a test over all of this unit in 1 WEEK!*
(I will be grading the homework)
