 Online test
It is a 21st Century online test given for the first time in the Spring of 2015.

To gauge how well students are mastering state standards.

These standards, developed for educators by educators, broadly outline what students
should know and be able to do in order to be prepared to enter the workplace, career
education training, and college.

 M-STEP 2017 FEATURES
♦Modern test design, with fewer multiple choice questions and more problem
solving and critical thinking.

♦Computer adaptive testing (CAT) for English language arts (ELA) and
mathematics assessments, which provides a more individualized test experience
for students and more precise measurements of student learning.

♦Efficiency:
− Testing time (reduced in 2016) takes less than 1% of instructional time annually
− High school assessment also serves as a college-entrance exam

♦Actionable results—preliminary results available to schools within a few days of

testing; final results are available before the start of the next school year for
buildings operating under a standard calendar: parent reports are distributed by
schools at the start of the school year.
M-STEP
SCHEDULE
To students in grades 3-8 and
measures current student knowledge
of Michigan’s high academic
standards in English language arts
(ELA), mathematics, science, and
social studies.

It also includes the Michigan Merit

Examination in 11th grade, which
consists of a free SAT with essay that
also measures student knowledge on
state ELA and mathematics standards,
M-STEP science and social studies
components, and a work skills
assessment called ACT WorkKeys.

 AP COURSE AUDIT
The AP Course Audit was created at the request of both
secondary school and college members of the College
Board who sought a means for the College Board to:

• Provide AP teachers and administrators with clear

guidelines on curricular and resource requirements that
must be in place for AP courses.

• Give colleges and universities confidence that AP

courses are designed to meet the same clearly articulated
college-level criteria across high schools.

 THE AP CHINESE LANGUAGE
AND CULTURE EXAM
The exam assesses students' interpersonal, interpretive, and
presentational communication skills in Mandarin Chinese, as well as
knowledge of Chinese culture. It is designed to be comparable to 4th
semester/250 hours of college level instruction. 
The exam is administered on a computer. The student reads on the
screen, listens through headphones, types using the keyboard, and
speaks into a microphone.
All Chinese text displayed on the screen is available in either traditional
Chinese characters or simplified Chinese characters. Students may
choose between traditional or simplified Chinese characters for
reading and writing in Chinese.
Students have two options for typing Chinese text:
Microsoft Pinyin IME (MSPY) or Microsoft New Phonetic IME.

 Exam schedule
2 hours and 15 minutes — 2 sections — multiple choice and free-response. Each
section has two parts.
Section I: Multiple Choice | ~70 questions | ~1 hour and 20 minutes | 50% of Final Exam
Score
Part A — Listening: 30 to 35 questions | 20 minutes (25% of exam score)
• Identify the appropriate continuation of a conversation (10 to 15 questions; 10
minutes)
• Answer questions about different types of listening stimuli (15 to 20 questions;
10 minutes)
Part B — Reading: 35 to 40 questions | 60 minutes  (25% of exam score)
• Answer questions about different types of reading texts.
Section II: Free-response | 4 tasks | 41 minutes | 50% of final Exam Score
Part A — Writing: 30 minutes
• Narrate a story suggested by a series of pictures (15 minutes)
• Read and answer an email message (15 minutes)
Part B — Speaking: 11 minutes
• Respond to a series of thematically linked questions as part of a simulated
conversation (4 minutes)
• Deliver a presentation on a given aspect of Chinese culture (7 minutes)

• Very effective summative assessment we can refer to.
M-step, it is four core courses assessment for students whose grades are grades 3-8, and the
content is based on State Standards.
AP for high school students, the content is based on ACTFL.

• The rubric and content of these 2 assessment can be

considered into teaching goals and objectives setting.

• The results can be used in needs analyses and curriculum

planning.
M-step especially for Chinese immersion teacher.
AP for high school teacher making decisions about course content, assessments and
instructional materials, the resources available through the AP Chinese Language and Culture
Home Page on AP Central, as well as the AP Chinese Language and Culture Teacher’s Guide can
be referred to. With the exam results, they can also be used to consider the whole overarching
curricular.
