Impact of Academic stress on student’s performance

Introduction

Background
Stress has turn out to be part of student’s academic life due to the different internal and external
expectations placed upon their shoulders. For the longest time, people assumed that the student
population was the least affected by any sort of stress or problems. Stress is now understood as a lifestyle
crisis. Depression, anxiety, behavioral problems, irritability, etc. are few of the many problems reported
in students with high academic stress. Incidences of depression were also found among stressful
youngsters as it is linked with inability to concentrate, fear of failure, negative evaluation of future.

Youngsters were also reported to be indulging in various risky behaviors such as increased consumption
of alcohol and drugs, physical inactivity, poor eating and sleeping patterns. The pressure these students
face to perform is so severe resulting in increased number of suicidal attempts.

Problem Statement
While the stress response may be identical, the sources of stress reported by individuals vary. These
differences would be seen in the causes, sources and consequences of stressors. Some of the common
stressors reported in an academic setting include excessive assignments, personal inadequacy, fear of
failure, inadequate study facilities, teacher and student relationships, poor time management and social
skills, peer competition. The study aims to know the sources that build up the stress in students and their
impact on student’s performance.

Questions
1. Is there any significant impact of academic stress on student’s performance? If yes than is it
positive or negative
2. How the academic stresses have an impact on student’s performance?
3. What is the relationship between the academic stress and student’s performance?

Objectives Of The study

The general purpose of the study is to determine the impact of academic stress on student’s performance
at student’s of a private university. To investigate how academic stress affects student’s performance.

1.4 Justification
This research is just to analyze the impact of academic stress on student’s performance at a private
university.

1.5 Limitations of Research

The area of this study is a private university. This research is only for the purpose to analyze the impact of
academic stress on student’s performance. The sample of the study is small. Students might manipulate
their true responses.

1.7 Scope
The main purpose of this study is to know the impact of academic stress on student’s performance. It
specifically examines how personal inadequacy, fear of failure, inadequate study facilities and teacher and
student’s relationship has an impact on student’s performance. Moreover, this study focuses on both
primary and secondary data.

The primary dimension is concerned with the gathering of primary data through the utilization of semi
structured questionnaire to gather respondent’s opinion on the study problem. The data will be collected
from the students of a private university. it will take approximately two weeks for the collection of data.
The secondary data collection includes the use of secondary information systems through the review of
journal articles released by relevant organizations.

1.8 Definitions of Key Terms

Personal Inadequacy

A lack of confidence that makes someone feel they are not good enough to deal with a particular situation
or with life in general.

Fear of Failure

When fear is dominant over someone and it stops them doing the things that can move them forward to
achieve their goals.

Inadequate Study Facilities

Lack of facilities required to study like unavailability of books at library, disturbed environment at
university, teachers absenteeism etc.

Teacher and Student Relationship

Successful teachers are those that have the ability to maximize the learning potential of all students in
their class. Developing positive relationships between a teacher and student is a fundamental aspect of
quality teaching and student learning.

2. Research Methodology
Areas covered include research design, procedure, population, sample and sampling methods, measuring
instruments, variables, hypothesis, plan of analysis, software employed and research schedule. This study
will involve the measurement of the sources of stress primarily on four dimensions namely, personal
inadequacy, fear of failure, teacher and student relationship, and inadequate study facilities and their
impact on students performance. Incomplete forms and questionnaire will not be included in the study.
Results will be then analyzed using SPSS. The research will be quantitative in nature because cause and
effect is to be measured.

2.1 Research Design

This research is quantitative and causal in nature, data will be collected from students of a private
university and analysis will be done by using secondary data analysis technique. Other supportive
literature will be gathered from previous studies and meta-analysis by different authors.

2.2 Population
The total population of the private university is 500 students.

2.3 Sample and sampling method

The sample size of this research is 200 respondents and sampling method is random.

2.4 Measurement/Instrument selection

The primary as well as secondary data will be used in research. Five point likert scale questionnaire will
be used to collect the data from 200 respondents.

2.5 Variables

2.6 Hypothesis
Hypothesis (1)

H0- There is no significant impact of academic stress on student’s performance.

H1- There is a significant impact of academic stress on student’s performance.

Hypothesis (2)

H0- There is no significant relationship between academic stress and student’s performance.

H1- There is a significant relationship between academic stress and student’s performance.

2.7 Plan of Analysis

The result of the study will be analyzed through quantitative, regression, correlation and frequency
analysis. The data will be processed through SPSS to get the results.

2.8 Software Employed

Microsoft Word, SPSS.

2.9 Research Schedule

This research is going to complete in time of 16 weeks that is one semester. In this period all the research
work including analysis and discussion will be completed.
