22.a) What is a computer?
A computer is an electronic programmeable device capable of sorting, selecting,
retrieving, storing and processing data to information.

b) State examples of generations a computer has under gone.

 first generation
 second generation
 Third generation
 Fourth generation

23.a) Distinguish a stand alone computer from a networked computer

A stand alone computer is a computer that is used on its own without requiring a
connection to a local area network ( LAN) or Wide area network(WAN) or any other
computer.

WHILE

A network computer is a computer with minimal memory disk storage and processor
power, designed to connect a network especially the internet

b) Give the advantages of using a networked computer

 A user can logon to a computer anywhere on the network and access their work
files from the file server

 Computers can be managed centrally - with the same software installed on each
one

 Time - it is much faster to install an application once on a network - and copy it

across the network to every workstation

 Sharing printers, plotters, modems etc saves money and time

 Security - the Network Manager can allocate usernames and passwords to all
users to try to prevent unauthorised access

6
 It is easy and convenient to monitor users - for example websites visited or
documents printed - this can be done using software running on the server

24.a) Define the term software

Computer software are programs that are stored in the computer.
Or
Intangible components of a computer

b) List examples of software you know

 System software
 Application software
 Programming languages
 Utility programmes

25. (a) State any four reasons why we study computer studies. (4 marks)
 To promote critical and analytical thinking for hands-on solutions through
computing innovations in the sciences such as vaccine research, environmental
protection, business, entertainment and education, which make a positive
difference in the world.
 To create awareness in a learner about the developments and emerging
issues concerning computing and society.
 To get jobs. Computer studies provides a foundation that serves as a competitive
advantage in a career, in whatever field one chooses.
 To acquire skills in the use of ICT for enhanced productivity and
development.
 To promote creative knowledge for problem solving. Computing develops
capabilities in solving deep, multidimensional problems requiring imagination
and sensitivity

(b) Mention any six setbacks that were associated with the first generation
computers (1946 – 1958): (6 marks)

 They broke down frequently (Required standby technicians)

 Needed very many people to operate due to their huge size.
 High level of training was required before use
 They produced a lot of heat and burned out.
 They consumed a lot of power
 They produced a lot of noise.
 They had limited primary memory, and so they were very slow.
 They were very expensive to buy, setup and maintain.
 They were not portable/ they were very huge - One computer could take up space
of several floors in big buildings.
 Manual assembly of individual components into one functioning unit required.

7
 Air conditioning required.
