principal helped provide some insight on what other administrators do within their position or
how they view different aspects of their job. Being able to have this opportunity helped me
Survey

4. What types of resources have you used or would like to use within your school? How do
5. What do you view as your most important contribution to the daily operations of your
school?
6. How do you reach out to all stakeholders of a school? What role do you have in
7. What gets the majority of your attention during a typical school day or week?
8. What role do you have in ensuring all district, state, and federal policies and laws are
meet?
9. What are some ways you connect with the school community?
Summary Results
STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT FUCTIONS IN PRACTICE 3
Upon receiving the survey results back I was able to begin comparing and contrasting the
two different administrators. During my analysis, I was able to see how both administrators
mentioned that the school sends out weekly communication to all families while the teachers
send out their own weekly emails pertaining to their grade level and classroom. These emails
cover several critical areas for the entire school or grade level. Another similarity that both
administrators mentioned was how the majority of their attention during a typical school day or
week was managing student discipline. This is something that didn’t surprise me as there seems
to be an influx of behaviors occurring and teachers don’t always know how to handle it. Both
administrators mentioned that they make an effort to be present and visible to help with
connecting with the school community. Both administrators stated that their most important
contributions to the daily operations of their school depends on providing leadership in meeting
the needs of students, teachers, staff, and parents while observing the operations to ensure
fidelity. Lastly, both administrators mentioned that they provide opportunities for staff to lead
and get involved on campus with different projects or events while providing leadership
opportunities for those who have identified with wanting those opportunities.
While there were a lot of similarities there were also many differences between the two
administrators. One area that they had differing opinions was how they plan to recruit and retain
staff each year. One administrator mentioned working with Arizona teacher colleges to recruit
interns and student teachers and to participate in job fairs to recruit staff while the other
administrator mentioned they would look for staff that are able to function effectively in a direct
instruction and traditional model. In order to retain staff each year one administrator mentioned
how they value their teacher’s input and treat them as professional yet still ensuring that they are
being trained to meet their full potential. The other administrator mentioned how retaining

quality staff requires the academic support by providing feedback and routine support to assist
teachers to help increase their abilities to be an effective teacher for all students. When looking at
what types of resources each administrator would like to incorporate one mentioned a student
resource officer and a school counselor while the other mentioned providing parents with
academic resources at a reduced rate to help enhance the programs the school already provides.
Obtaining a school counselor could be done through a new grant that provides funding for this
position.
Principal Priorities
In order for both of these administrators to uphold the vision and mission of their schools
they need to organize and implement a specific operations plan which begins with teachers and
students but translates into ensuring school safety. They understand that they need to establish
routines from addressing the various types of threats and issues a school may encounter through
training all staff to be diligent in their supervision and practice for student safety. When looking
at student safety this also translates into their role of being an instructional leader to create a
culture where learning and respect is valued. This cannot be done without being visible and
offering support to all students, teachers, staff, and parents. Majority of their days are spent in
SPED meetings, classroom observations, or handling student discipline situations. They have
many other tasks as an administrator, but their days become very busy with ensuring the school
is running smoothly and that all operations are being taken care of.
An administrator needs to lead with a purpose in mind and that is the success and safety
of the students. This cannot be done without the administrative team working together to ensure
that all policies and laws are met and supervising that implementation is occurring from

curriculum to accommodations and modifications for special education students. They both have
the opportunity to lead with a purpose by making an effort to get into classes on a daily basis to
either impart some words of encouragement to the students or to simply check on the climate and
culture of the building. The more that they are able to show that they support everyone within the
school the more that it allows our schools to see that administration is present and there for
support.
This survey helped me understand the viewpoint of being an administrator from two
different administrators on how they can be at different aspects of their career or school locations
yet have similar viewpoints and opinions about running a school. School leaders are there to
support everyone within a school to the best of their abilities and this experience helped me see
