Probability SOL 4.

13 Study Guide

Learning Goals:
The students will:
a) predict the likelihood of an outcome of a simple event; and
b) represent probability as a number between 0 and 1, inclusive.

Vocabulary:

Probability – the chance that a particular outcome will occur, measured as a ratio of the total
possible outcomes.

Likely - will probably happen, an outcome with a probability between 0.5 (1/2) and 1

Unlikely – will probably not happen, an outcome with a probability between 0 and 0.5 (1/2)

Certain – inevitable – will definitely happen, an outcome with a probability of 1.

Equally likely – a equal chance of happening and not happening, an outcome with a probability
of 0.5 (1/2)

Impossible – no chance – will not happen, an outcome with a probability of 0.

Likelihood – the chance that a particular outcome will occur.

Outcomes – one of the possible results of a probability experiment.

Trials - the performance or exercise of an experiment.

Inclusive – a range of numbers includes the first and last number and all numbers in between

Examples & Explanations:

The probability of an event should be a fraction.

Probability = Favorable (desired) outcomes

Total possible outcomes

The likelihood of an event will be a word to describe how likely an outcome is to occur using the words:
impossible, unlikely, equally likely, likely, certain.

Impossible Equally Likely Certain

Unlikely Likely
1 ½ 1
0.5
