Fiji’s first female GRUESOME KILLING

A young woman from Rotuma has created
history by becoming Fiji’s first female
licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer.
Maria Munivai Wilson recently acquired
her Aircraft Maintenance Engineers
Licence from the Civil Aviation Authority
of the Fiji Islands (CAAFI) after joining
Air Pacific Engineering & Maintenance
Department’s avionics workshop as a
tradeswoman three years ago.
Congratulating Wilson for the historic
achievement, Air Pacific’s Managing
Director & CEO Dave Pflieger said
the national airline is extremely proud.
“The development of our people is
one of Air Pacific’s key strategies as
a business.
Our people are our strength and I am a
firm believer in investing in our team,”
said Pflieger.
As an accredited engineer, Wilson is
now part of the Air Pacific team that
maintains the air-worthiness of Air
Pacific’s fleet of two Boeing 747s,
one B767 aircraft, its three narrow-
bodied 737s and Pacific Sun’s two
ATR42-500 turboprops.
Maintenance work includes carrying
out scheduled aircraft maintenance at
Air Pacific’s Nadi Airport Hangar, as
well as aircraft checks on line when
the aircraft transits or overnights.
“It’s great to be part of a team of such
highly motivated and skilled group
of engineers,” said Ms Wilson. “I am
indebted to the engineering team of
Air Pacific for their confidence and
support.”
Wilson is in her late 20s, the daughter of
Siriroa Simo and Luise Elena Gabriel and
attended primary schools in Wainunu,
Savusavu, Nausori and Nadi.
She went to Nadi Muslim College for
her secondary education and obtained
a diploma in electronics/electrical
engineering from the Fiji Institute of
Technology.

Anselme, whose husband Jose was brutally
stabbed in a beche-de-mer robbery gone
wrong early Tuesday morning.
Doctors and surgeons at Lautoka Hospital
fought valiantly for six hours but were
unsuccessful in saving Mr Anselme’s
life because his wounds were too severe,
said Medical Superintendent Dr Jemesa
Tudravu.
Mrs Anselme said she drove her wounded
and heavily-bleeding husband to hospital
and never saw him again until late in the
afternoon when they wheeled him out to
the Intensive Care Unit. “He was still in a
coma and never woke up,” she said.
Mr Anselme fought off the robbers, who
only managed to take a phone before
fleeing.
“There are waterfalls, streams and rivers
that lie hidden in our deep forests and I
have identified some that will be included
in the program.”
Mr Dayal has also started consultations
with landowning units on his plans and the
response has been positive.
“I have also been in consultation with
government authorities and I believe
Labasa offers a lot for tourism.
“Other projects like backpacker
accommodation can be introduced.
“We’re taking one thing at a time but by
year end or early next year, we should have
the sightseeing projects up and running.
“We need to offer the best to our tourists
and we have a lot of natural resources that
can be turned into tourist destinations.”

compliant with the Commerce Commission’s
pricing structure of basic food items.
Following the announcement of a 10-
20 per cent reduction in certain basic
food items, Commission chairman Dr
Mahendra Reddy said they would be
monitoring stores to ensure compliance by
retailers and traders.
“The Commission’s offices will be on the
ground to ensure the new prices are indeed
imposed by retailers and traders.
Those found in violation will be imposed a
spot fine up to $10,000 payable within 21
days or face illegal proceedings and pay
fine up to $20,000,” he said.
He said they were particular about traders
and retailers complying with the pricing
structure and would ensure that those
found breaching it would be taken to task.
Before the approval and implementation of
the Price Control Order, Dr Reddy said the
commission had only set prices based on
the prices provided to them by retailers and
traders.
“The new order has allowed the
commission to remove these anomalies,”
he said.
Dr Reddy said if a retailer was also
importing basic food items, they would
only impose the retail mark up and not the
import mark up.
He said the items for which they had
announced decreased prices made up less than
five per cent of basic essential food items.

US opens office in Fiji
with $27M aid
America’s Secretary of State, Hillary
Clinton, says the US Agency for
International Development will return to
the Pacific with a new office in Fiji and
$US21 million ($NZ27.8m) in aid.
She made the announcement on Thursday
in Hawaii on the first stop of a two-week,
10-nation Asia Pacific tour, the ABC
reported.
Mrs Clinton will also visit New Zealand,
Australia, American Samoa, Papua New
Guinea in the Pacific, and Indonesia, Vietnam,
China, Cambodia, and Malaysia in Asia.
Speaking at the East West Centre in
Honolulu, Ms Clinton clarified the
importance Washington is placing on the
Pacific region.
“We are working through the Pacific Island
Forum to support the Pacific island nations

as they strive to really confront and solve
the challenges they face.”
Those challenges ranged “from climate
change to freedom of navigation”.
“To that end, I’m pleased to announce
that USAID would return to the Pacific
next year, opening an office in Fiji with a
fund of $US21 million to support climate
change mitigation.” (Some would also call
it an attempt to check growing Chinese
financial aid, and political influence, in the
South Pacific - which often earns backing
for UN resolutions.)
Since the 2006 coup, Fiji has been
suspended from the Commonwealth and
the 16-nation Pacific Islands Forum and
has been hit with sanctions by the European
Union and countries including the United
States, Australia and New Zealand.

Fiji Retailers Association said retailers
will have to tighten up on operational costs
following the Price Control Order.
President Himmat Lodhia said he
welcomes the move as it will greatly
benefit consumers however, businesses
will have to lower their costs if they want
to make profits.
Lodhia said in a few months time, they can
fully experience the implications of the
new move.
Lodhia added that small businesses in the
North and outer islands will have a greater
reduction price percentage however they
will not get the exorbitant mark up as in
the past.

A proud Nitesh Singh was lost for words
when he was named the Fiji Chef of the Year
during the Moffat National Salon Culinaire
Awards at Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi.
The Fiji Chef of the Year is the highest
honour any local chef can receive.
Mr Singh becomes the new champion after
he won the prestigious award.

Fiji Water helps out
OVER 500 million liters of free artesian
water was provided by Fiji Water and the
Fiji Water Foundation throughout Fiji
since its inception three years ago.
This included water supplied during
heavy flooding in 2009 and the recent
period of drought seeing water sources
dry in most parts of the Western Division.
Fiji Water director of external affairs
David Roth said water supplied were in
the form of donated bottles of water and
tanks filled with water from their aquifer.
“During the floods of 2009, we were able
to implement a significant solution that
involved taking large bladders, 10,000
litre bladders of water filling them with
Fiji Water directly from the aquifer.
“We truck them all around the island to
affected communities after the flood,
from Ba to Tavua and down to Sigatoka,”
Mr Roth said.
“We were also able to of course bring water
directly to relief sites, to evacuation centers
and that is an example again of how we

Two former Post Fiji employees have
been charged by the Fiji Independent
Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).
The men, Matarino Madoggo and
Kautanagauna Raiqeu appeared before

with two counts of conspiracy to defraud–
obtaining a gain and two counts of theft.
The pair were unrepresented and are
seeking the Legal Aid Commission to

Fiji’s Prime Minister, Commodore
Voreqe Bainimarama has welcomed the
step taken by the people of Lovoni from
Ovalau to reconcile and seek forgiveness
from him for their wrongs in the
attempted mutiny at the Queen Elizabeth
Barracks in 2000.
Bainimarama said he was pleased with
their efforts to seek forgiveness and
accepted their traditional apology.
“I received their apology and forgive
them for the events of that day.” he said

FEA requests to conserve energy during Diwali
The Fiji Electricity Authority has
urged consumers to conserve energy
during Diwali despite the favorable
rain over the last couple of weeks.
CEO Hasmukh Patel in a statement said the
current wet conditions have helped with an
increase of four to five meters in the dam level
at Monasavu.
On the same note, Patel reiterate and
request all consumers to continue to
conserve energy.
Patel said during the month of October, FEA
has received some rainfall which has now
taken the Monasavu dam level to 732.36
metres (as off 9:00am on November 3).
He said that FEA had to conserve water
in the last 3-4 months, thus reducing the
generation mix to 30 percent hydro and
70percent from Thermal.
The conservation of water and increased
thermal generation has cost the Authority
over F$115million till end of October,
2010 while they had budgeted F$69m for
the whole year.
“We must also be mindful that water
from the Monasavu hydro dam is used to
generate electricity 24 hours a day and 7
days a week.
“The increased unbudgeted expenditure
for fuel has forced the Authority to further
tighten its operations and reduce costs

where possible in addition to the deferment
of a number of activities to 2011 which has
helped to save some $5.7m over the past
10 months in our operational expenditure.
Patel added despite the increased costs
of energy and awareness to conserve
energy consumers are yet to re-look into

“In the face of escalating global fuel prices
and the increased cost of electricity, we

Sexual offense cases in Fiji have increased
at an alarming rate this year with relatives
of the victims being the main culprits of the
rape cases
Assistant Police Spokesman, Atunaisa
Sokomuri said they have seen an increase
in sexual offense cases this year and the
victims are mostly under the age of 16.
“We are starting to see a trend this year and
a rise in these cases which have been very
concerning for us.” Sokomuri said.
“Another concerning thing is that victims
are mostly under the age of 16 years, the
youngest being 3 years old.” he added.
Sokomuri also said the main offenders in
these cases are the victim’s grandfathers,
uncles, stepfathers and even their own
fathers with the oldest being 83 years old.
He has also urged parents and guardians
to protect their children from these types
of exploitation and to ensure that their
welfare is well looked after.
“We do not want see more children
exploited this way and parents should be
more vigilant and protective of their young
ones.” he said.

Fiji’s public prosecutors are pursuing

court of law to prove that those charges
were not substantiated and were baseless
and untrue.”
Ratu Sakiusa estimates that state has spent

FIJI’S first son to fly the world’s largest
passenger aircraft doesn’t have much to say
about the hype surrounding his high-flying job.
“Just extremely honored and excited to

minute of it,” said Timoci Ibeco Qaranivalu,
32, who flies with United Arab Emirates’
international airline, Emirates Airline.
As first officer on airbus A380, Mr
Qaranivalu’s career with Emirates Airline
is an open-end contract that concludes at
the retirement age of 65 years.
He flies one of 13 airbus A380 of Emirates
Airline after he joined in mid-2008.
Mr Qaranivalu’s flying career started with
a three-year stint at Air Fiji. He then joined
Air Pacific where he remained for four
years before joining Emirates Airline.

Richard Ali said Mr Qaranivalu was the first
person from Fiji to have co-piloted an airbus
A380 with Emirates Airline.
Since living in Dubai for the same number
of years as his career with Emirates Airline,
Mr Qaranivalu, a father of three and native
of Sawaieke in Gau says he loves the
challenges of the job.
These, he said, ranged from the multi-time
zone travel, diverse destination network and
desert-hot to snow-cold weather operations.
“I love the experience of flying around the
worldwide network of 105 destinations
on six continents (from) polar crossing,
Atlantic crossings and from Africa to the
subcontinent and to the Far East,” he said.
Understanding the different accents in the
regions that Emirates Airline flies to adds
to the competitive nature of the job, he said.

Fijian asylum seeker fears for his life
A Fijian asylum seeker in Australia claims
he is on the run from both the Australian
and Fiji authorities.
The man, who wishes to be known as
Villiame to protect his real identity,
believes people in the Fiji military have
identified him after he participated in a
Radio Australia panel discussion.
The discussion was about the situation of Fiji
citizens wanting protection visas to stay in
Australia.
He and two others accused Australia of
hypocrisy in placing sanctions on the Fiji
government for being undemocratic, but still
refused to grant Fiji citizens protection visas.
Villiame has now overstayed his original visa.
Villiame told Radio Australia’s Pacific
Case of human trafficking
Fiji’s first human trafficking case was
heard at the High Court in Suva.
Kadali Murti was charged with one count
of Trafficking in Person and seven counts
of Obtaining Property by Deception after
he was alleged to have assisted seven
Indian nationals into working as food
packers at a Marvin Farm in New Zealand.
It was alleged that between May 1 and
September 10, 2010, Murti helped in granting
the entry of Yadvinder Singh, Jaswinder
Singh, Vijay Kumar, Tara Chand, Tejbeer,
and Lahkvir Singh into the country where
they were told to work at the farm in NZ and
were to pay him $NZ4300 each.

the witness stand and explained how they
had negotiations with Murti in India that
they would work in NZ but had to give the

He said he wouldn’t have given the money
if he knew that Murti had a different motive.
Chand said the same thing was done to
his other friends who also gave money to
Murti and they were scheduled to meet at
the New Delhi Airport on September 8 for
their flight to Nadi.
He said he had asked Murti where Nadi
was when they were given their airfare
tickets because this would be his first time
out of India, to which he replied that Nadi
was in New Zealand.

by the Fiji government as an attempt to use
any excuse to try to stay in Australia.

seeking asylum or refugee status or
whatever it might be,” she said.
“We have bigger things to get on with.
“There is no persecution.”
But Villiame says Fiji military officials had
called his Fiji phone number and asked if
he was at home, as they seek to confirm his
identity.

Fiji and China celebrated the 35th
anniversary of the establishment
of diplomatic ties between the two
countries on Wednesday evening.

affairs,” said Han.
Kubuabola also said that the two
countries value one another. “The ties
between the two countries have been a
mutual one with non interference in their
internal affairs,” he stressed.
Kubuabola announced that as part of
this great relationship Fiji was going
to establish a consul office in Shanghai
soon. “Fiji’s look North policy will
strengthen these ties,” he said.

THE National Fire Authority has urged

parents to supervise their children during
Diwali celebrations because most fire
tragedies during the celebrations are
caused by unsupervised children handling
fireworks and matches.
NFA chief fire officer Tupou Saubulinayau
said all accidents due to fireworks occurred
as a result of carelessness, negligence and
ignorance.
“But these can certainly be avoided by
observing some very simple precautions,”
he said.

“If you’re going to set off fireworks at
home this Diwali, do so responsibly.”
Mr Saubulinayau said as the country
celebrated the festival of lights this Friday,
they wanted to remind people to be mindful
of the safety of their family, friends and
property.
Safety tips during Diwali:
(1) For fairy lights and other electrical
displays use only one item per power
socket. Don’t overload power boards or
piggy back double adapters.
(2) Only use decorative lights that have
an approved standard label and follow the
manufacturer’s instructions to setup and
operate it.
(3) Check your fairy lights before use. If
wiring, cords or plugs appear damaged -
don’t use them.
(4) Decorative lights may become very hot
so keep away from children and flammable
materials such as wrapping paper, light
curtains or decorations.
(5) When using candles (diya), place them
in a safe position away from flammable
materials and out of reach of children.
Extinguish them before going to bed.
(6) Switch off all electrical displays and
decorative lights before going to bed.

FIJIAN women top the list of cervical
cancer patients by as much as 1008 from a
total of 1561 cases recorded in the past 15
years, it has been revealed.
Since 1995, the number of Fijian women
diagnosed with the cancer has fluctuated
anywhere between 30 in 2006 to 103 in 1996.
Statistics released by CWM’s obstetrics
consultant Doctor James Fong revealed
that a total of 731 deaths linked to cervical
cancer for the same period.
Indian women comprised the second
largest number of the three major ethnic
groups diagnosed with cervical cancer.

the detection of the cancer in 495 Indian

his decision to write the book
was the 125-year story of the
institution which is now under
the Fiji National University.
“It’s an interesting 125-year
story of the school due to the
background of the effect of
politics, disease, philanthropy
and new developments in medical
education which FSM was in the
forefront of developing,” he said.
“In historical literature, Pacific
Islanders are largely aware of their
history but little is written about it.
“I think (Dr) Brij Lal has said
this, and has been instrumental
in remedying this deficiency, if our Pacific
Islanders remain unaware of their history,
they are doomed to repeat their mistakes.
“The final reason that motivated me to
write the book was to understand what I
quoted the “poisoned chalice” from 2005
to the end of 2007.
“It really wasn’t self-justification or trying
to create some sort of legacy or trying to
get back at people.
“I felt that in order to get closure, I had to
write about the story, this school and my
time here.”
Professor Brewster said the book has been
written for the general reader with an
interest in Pacific Island’s politics, history,
health and medical education.

Diwali is a time

that we bought and collected during the
year. Of course it is also an opportune
time to throw away the crap and malice
and other junk that we collect in human
hearts. Diwali is a time of purification, to
clean our hearts and pray for the good of
mankind by forgiving those who annoyed
us.
For those Indians settled overseas, it is
also a time to reminiscence our “yaadein”
and reflect on our good times in the
homes that we left behind in Fiji and
India. May we also pray for those who
we left behind.
Diwali is also a time when we see
hypocrisy in our people. For the whole
year they will go to pubs, attend parties,
do all sorts of merry-making and live
life as normal human beings with no
worries. However when it comes to
Diwali, they will say that they will not
celebrate Diwali because their loved
one had passed away. This is the height
of two-facedness. They will not light

diyas or cook Diwali sweets, but will not
hesitate to light BBQ fires just months
after Diwali during Christmas. Love and
respect for the loved one does not mean
showing the world that you miss them
only in Diwali and Holi. It is important
to learn and live the lessons of life- love

Iranian ‘adulteress’ to

Clinton warns of “resource
curse” in Papua New Guinea
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton offered to
help Papua New Guinea create a sovereign
wealth fund to manage its resource revenue
and avoid a “resource curse” which could
fuel conflict and corruption.
During her four-hour stop-over en route
from Asia to New Zealand, Clinton
stressed that the South Pacific island nation
needed to manage its energy windfall,
while preserving its diverse environment.
“There is a phrase ‘resource curse’ where
countries with an abundance of natural
resources like oil and gas or gold or
minerals, if they are not handled right can
actually (make) a country poorer instead of
richer,” Clinton told a news conference in
the capital Port Moresby.
PNG is a resource-rich nation with reserves
of gold and gas.
U.S. oil giant Exxon Mobil is the majority
stakeholder in a new $15 billion liquefied
natural gas (LNG) project in PNG due to
come on stream in 2014.
But many in PNG fear the windfall from
the country’s biggest ever resource project
could fuel corruption and violence.

refusing to say how much interest there is

Estate said all media inquiries were being

interest in the property, he asked a number
of questions about the reporter’s finances
before saying “I don’t need to discuss the
King’s personal business, thank you very
much” and hung up the phone.

build up over time, thus the flannel loses
softness after awhile) is vinegar. If you
add 1 cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle of
your washer, it removes any soap residue

sure not to use too much detergent, as this
makes fabric stiff and hard; and you could
add an extra rinse cycle to ensure that all
the detergent is removed.
Washing White Clothes
When washing white clothes, hot water
works the best, since your detergent will
dissolve and work the most effectively
at this temperature. Water rinses equally
well at any temperature, however, so be
sure to rinse all your clothes using cold
water to save on hot water. If your clothes
are not particularly soiled, you could
probably get away with using hot water
every second or third washing to save
on hot water as well. Be sure to always
follow the washing directions given on
the label of your clothes for best results.
Deodorant Build Up Removal
The deodorant/antiperspirant build
up, which also causes yellow armpit
stains, is likely caused by a combination
of deodorant and perspiration. Many
deodorants and antiperspirants contain
aluminum salts. When these salts are
combined with laundry detergent,
especially in cooler water settings, they are
not easily dissolved, and they remain on
the fabric. To remove the stains and build
up of antiperspirant, try soaking the shirts

Softening New Sheets
New sheets are usually stiff because of the
chemicals and sizing that the manufacturer
adds. To remove this, try washing with
less detergent than recommended (as
detergent will also make clothes stiff),
and add 1 cup of white vinegar to the rinse
cycle. Vinegar works great at removing
detergent and sizing build up. You may
also want to add an extra rinse cycle.
Mildew Removal from Swimsuit
You should be able to get the mildew
stains out of your swimsuit by soaking
it in warm soapy water and borax. Or,
combine 1/4 teaspoon of color safe bleach
and 1/4 cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide.
With a clean cloth, gently rub the stain
until it is gone. Launder the garment, and
dry in the sun if possible.

The Unique Waitakere Diwali: An echoing

message to the Super Auckland City

Just mind-blowing and magnificent- these
are the terms that sum up the Waitakere
Diwali at Trusts Stadium, Henderson,
Waitakere, Auckland, New Zealand on
Sunday 24th October, 2010. The Stadium,
with seating, temporary chairs, standing
and sitting was choc a block with some
five thousand attentive people witnessing
the grand stage Ram Lila performed by
the students of Waitakere Hindi School.
This perhaps is the largest indoor Diwali
celebration in the southern hemisphere, if
not in the world.
The stage play Ram Lila , based on life of
Lord Ram from Hindu epic Ramayan, was
preceded by the traditional aarti (welcome)
song, followed by the New Zealand
National anthem on the accompaniment of
Harmonium and tabla, (Indian twin-drum)
first in Maori followed by the English
version. The formal ceremony saw the
Chief Guest, Ethnic Affairs Minister Hon
Pansy Wong deliver her address in which
she praised the diversity in New Zealand
and assured the Westies that Waitakere
Diwali would remain an icon of the West
Auckland, even in the Super Auckland City.

and scene selection, the final result was a
deliverance that made some overcome with
pleasant emotions because of the devotional
chaupaais (quadruplets) from Ramayan sung
in the traditional tunes of the yesteryears and
popular Bollywood numbers. In the
tradition set some years ago, the Bhangra
group led the audience to the outside
grounds for a magnificent fireworks display
lasting some ten minutes which shook the
silent moonlit Waitakere evening with echo
of the thundering noise emanating from
multi-coloured sparkles that lit the very
pleasant Saturday evening.
With the galore of some thirty craft and goods

stalls and fifteen food stalls, people of all
choices and tastes had a grand Diwali day
experience. At the peak of events at around
seven in the evening, the complex had some
fifteen thousand people around the event
while the rolling crowd during the day would
have exceeded twenty five thousand. That
is the extent to which an icon of Waitakere
City Council and that of Waitakere, still
managed by a community group, Waitakere
Indian Association, with blessing of its loyal
supporters, were able to deliver a memorable
and hugely successful event that reflected
the diversity of New Zealand and gives the
reason to the Super City why community
based events should not only be encouraged,
but emulated in other parts of Auckland. This
is an example where dedicated and successful
community organisations, which appreciate
their respective cultures and traditions,
are best suited to organise such events in
partnership with the local government which
should allow the community to sit in the
driver’s seat when organising such events. In
this respect, Waitakere City Council had been
a shining light in setting up a successful trend
of community-local government partnership
which the Super City needs to take on board.

POTTY TRAINING YOUR CHILD
CONTINUED FROM LAST WEEK
A word of caution: some children may find
toilet training discouraging or humiliating
if they have too many accidents in
underwear. So it is a good idea for the child
to have some “successes” either in diapers
or pull-ups before you put underwear on.
With these thoughts in mind, we are getting
closer and closer to independent toileting.
Making sure your child is both physically
and psychologically ready, and setting the
stage are two of the most important steps in
toileting success!
OK! We’re ready to start toilet training!
By the time you’ve finished with the
preparation (discussions, videos, books),
purchasing the potty chair and underwear/
pull-ups, most children will have started
making some associations between peeing/
pooping and the potty. For some it may be
peeing in his/her diaper, announcing that
she needs to pee and running to the potty
after the fact. For others, it may be actual
successes on the potty. And yet, for others
it may be the mere recognition of peeing
in his/her diaper. This is the time to start
watching your child’s body signals closely.
Most children will have a tell tale stance,
facial expression (“the look”), or routine
(running to another room) when having
a bowel movement. When you notice
that your child is about to have a bowel
movement (especially helpful if there is a
particular time of day your child does it)
this is the time to say “Shall we go sit on
the potty?” If willing, take your child to
the potty. Sometimes reading books will
help your child relax while sitting on the
potty. However, this may also end up being
a “reading fest” so I would try to limit the
book reading to only what’s necessary.
Additionally, some children may want
“privacy” and helping them sit on the
potty and then leaving (letting them know
that when they are done they should let you
know) may prove the most successful.
Recognizing when your child is urinating
is a bit harder. Some children, especially
as they get older and are voiding less
frequently, will stop momentarily to pee.
Some will even squat. Frequently watching
their fluid intake is more helpful. If your
child has had a large amount of fluid, taking
him/her to the potty 30 minutes to an hour
after drinking will maximize success, and
help your child recognize the connection
between bladder fullness and peeing.

will be “bowel” trained before being
“bladder” trained and vice versa. Whichever
may be first, keep in mind that it is usually one
before the other and not both simultaneously.
Additionally, day-time dryness almost always
comes before night-time dryness and may
precede it by several months.
Now that the process has started, here are
some additional things to keep in mind:
Patience! Patience! Patience!
Toilet training is a big process. Some
experts feel that it is the first and biggest
developmental step your child will take.
The process generally takes several weeks
to several months to complete.
Two steps forward, one step back.
Don’t be discouraged if you have a few
good days followed by a few bad. Again,
it’s a process that’s going to take time. Also
keep in mind that when your child is tired
or upset this is the most common time for
accidents or setbacks to occur.
Know when to back off
If you are pushing too hard, your child may
“push” back with more accidents and/or
resistance. Take the control out of the issue
and step back. It is ok to take a few days
or even few weeks “off” . Your child will
recognize the power struggle is gone and
relax and respond to it.
A final word: As hard as it may be to admit
or realize, toilet training is truly in the control
of your child. All you can do is be supportive
and encouraging and set the stage for success.
Keep in mind that your child will probably
be toilet trained when she is ready, NOT MINUS
necessarily when you are ready. If you are
experiencing major difficulties, it may be
time to sit back, re-examine the situation and
ask yourself if your child is truly ready (see
article on readiness). If you are meeting up
with a lot of resistance in a child that is ready,
it is time to examine those issues.
While most children show signs of
physical readiness to begin using the toilet
as toddlers, usually between 18 months
and 3 years of age, not all children have the
intellectual and/or psychological readiness
to be potty trained at this age.
Signs of physical readiness can include your
being able to tell when your child is about
to urinate or have a bowel movement by his
facial expressions, posture or by what he says,
staying dry for at least 2 hours at a time, and
having regular bowel movements.
Signs of intellectual and psychological
readiness include being able to follow
simple instructions and being cooperative,
being uncomfortable with dirty diapers and
wanting them to be changed, recognizing
when he has a full bladder or needs to have
a bowel movement, being able to tell you
when he needs to urinate or have a bowel
movement, asking to use the potty chair, or
asking to wear regular underwear.
Things to avoid when toilet training your
child, and help prevent resistance, are
beginning during a stressful time or period of
change in the family (moving, new baby, etc.),
pushing your child too fast, and punishing
mistakes (treat accidents and mistakes
lightly). Be sure to go at your child’s pace and
show strong encouragement and praise when
he is successful.

Federal police seize
heroin worth $59m
The Australian Federal Police say they
have made the fifth largest heroin seizure
in Australian history.
Three people were arrested in Sydney’s
west for allegedly attempting to import
168 kilograms of heroin.
The operation began almost two weeks
ago when customs officers in Sydney
discovered packages of heroin hidden
inside a number of wooden doors shipped
from Malaysia.
The Australian Federal Police then allowed
the doors to be delivered to a warehouse in
the city’s west.
They allege a 55-year-old woman and her
28-year-old son, along with a 33-year-old
Hong Kong national removed the heroin
from the doors and took them to a house
nearby.
Sydney zoo welcomes third
elephant calf
Sydney’s Taronga Zoo says its third Asian elephant calf.
The zoo keepers say the 120 kilogram female calf is healthy and walking around.
It is four years to the day since the arrival of the Asian elephant herd from Thailand.

Homeowners warned to
be cyclone ready
Emergency Management Queensland
(EMQ) has warned many of the state’s
older homes may not be prepared for this
year’s cyclone season.
The weather bureau says this summer is
expected to be wetter than average, with
up to six cyclones forming along the

UN loss ‘most embarrassing Debt collectors use

Canada needs foreign policy changes for
‘internationalist generation’
Canada’s failure to win a temporary seat
on the UN Security Council was “the most
embarrassing moment for Canada on the
world stage in more than 60 years,” Liberal
Leader Michael Ignatieff said Tuesday.
“Last month, for the first time since 1948,
Canada failed to win a seat on [the council],”
Ignatieff told the Montreal Council on Foreign
Relations. “This was a great disappointment
for Canada and a clear condemnation of our
foreign policy.”
In a bilingual speech titled “Rebuilding
Canada’s Leadership on the World Stage,”
Ignatieff took broad swipes at the minority-
government Conservatives.
He took careful aim at their reaction to
Canada’s loss to Portugal on Oct. 12 for the
UN seat, accusing the Tories of trying to
“escape accountability for their failure” by
blaming others, rather than themselves, for
the loss.
“The fact is that every prime minister who
has tried to win a seat for Canada on the UN
Security Council has succeeded except for
Stephen Harper,” he said.
Ignatieff also accused the Conservatives of:
• Ignoring China and India.
• Letting Canada’s share of new markets
fall behind.
• Walking away from Canada’s partners
in Africa.
• Abandoning the country’s role as a
respected mediator in the Middle East.
• Ignoring climate change.
• Withdrawing from UN peacekeeping.
“When you add all of that up, you have a
pretty convincing set of reasons why we
lost on the 12th of October,” he said.
“But I’m not here to be negative. I’m here
to be positive and to suggest positive ways
Canada might take back its place on the
world stage.”
Policy suggestions
For example, Canada could wage an
international campaign against the use of
child soldiers, he said. It could also work
to prevent nuclear proliferation, support the
Geneva Conventions and return to the fight
against climate change.
In the Middle East, Canada should not play
favorites by siding only with Israel, Ignatieff
said.
“The foreign policy debate in Canada should
not be about who is Israel’s best friend,” he
said. “It should be about how we bring peace
and security to Israelis, Palestinians and the
region.”
Canada should also aim to improve ties
to China, India and Brazil, he said, part of
what he described as a “whole of Canada
approach to international relations.”
“Our current way of engaging these countries
is with narrow commercial agreements,
narrowly economic agreements, when
what we’re looking for are agreement that
embrace education, culture, tourism, family
reunification and economic interaction.”
All of these improvements are necessary to
benefit “the most internationalist generation
that Canada has ever produced,” Ignatieff
said in French, referring to “a generation that
takes for granted that a Canadian citizen is a
citizen of the world.”
“What an incredible generation. They need
a government that is worthy of them and
they’re going to get it.”
heavy - handed tactics
Canadians are getting deeper and deeper
into debt. Since the mid-1980s, the average
household debt load has climbed to 146 per
cent of disposable income from 50 per cent,
according to a recent TD Economics report.
With rising debt come debt collectors. They
buy debt from credit card companies, utilities
and other firms, and then try to get consumers
to pay it back along with fees and penalties —
sometimes using questionable tactics.
Shauna Major’s nightmare began with a
$140 phone bill.
The Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., woman paid
the bill and has the proof. However, her file
wound up with a collection agency, which
gave it to a law firm.
Major began getting phone calls twice a
day seeking payment. “The harassment
was unbelievable,” she recalled.
When Major applied for a bank loan, she
found her credit rating had been damaged
by a collection agency report.
“I can not believe that this is happening,”
she said. “It is so ridiculous.”
Mark Silverthorn, a lawyer in Toronto who
formerly worked for debt collectors, now
represents people fighting the often heavy-
handed methods used by collection agencies.
“Maybe 25 per cent of debt collectors at
collection agencies are engaging in illegal,
unprofessional and unethical behavior,” he
said.
Canada’s 2011 immigration level unchanged
Canada to get up to 265,000 immigrants in

Canada will accept between 240,000 and
265,000 immigrants in 2011, about the same
number as 2010.
Most of those coming will be skilled workers,
as about 60 per cent of immigrants will be
accepted under the economic category. The

There are dozens of collection agencies in
Canada, and they’re all bound by provincial
laws covering behavior and ethics. However,
they often hire lawyers, who in some
provinces are not subject to the same laws.
One of the tools used by such lawyers is
a document called a draft statement of
claim. While it can appear to be an official
document, it is not.
Andrew Barkhouse of Antigonish, N.S.,
received a draft statement of claim from
the Natale Law Offices of Markham Ont.,
and when he saw the words “Superior
Court” on it he thought he was being sued.
“Originally, it looked kind of scary,”
Barkhouse said.
Silverthorn agreed the document looks
real, adding that it is not right to make
people think their debt problem has
become a legal problem.
“Collection agencies are doing something
indirectly that they can’t do directly,”
Silverthorn said. “Collection agencies are
hiring lawyers to send out … thousands of
draft statements of claim,” The use of draft
statements of claim has led to allegations of
professional misconduct against an Ontario
lawyer.
The Law Society of Upper Canada has
scheduled a disciplinary hearing for Nov.
16-17 against Deanna Natale of Natale

Deepawali is a festival where people
from all age groups participate. They give
expression to their happiness by lighting
earthen ‘diyas’ (lamps), decorating the
houses, bursting firecrackers and inviting
near and dear ones to their households
for partaking
in a sumptuous
feast. The lighting
of lamps is a
way of paying
obeisance to god
for attainment of
health, wealth,
knowledge, peace, valor and fame.
It is one time in the whole year that children
volunteer to leave their beds long before
the day begins. In fact, the traditional
oil bath at 3 a.m is the only chore that
stands between them and the pre-dawn
adventures. They emerge, scrubbed clean
to get into their festive attire, and light up
little oil lamps, candles and scented sticks
(agarbattis), the wherewithal for setting
alight crackers and sparklers.
On Diwali night, little clay lamps are lit
in Hindus homes, but nowadays colored
electric lamps are also used. What is the
significance of lighting a lamp? There is a
logical answer to this question. It is through
the light that the beauty of this world is
revealed or experienced. Most civilizations
of the world recognize the importance of
light as a gift of God. It has always been
a symbol of whatever is positive in our
world of experience.
To Hindus, darkness represents ignorance,
and light is a metaphor for knowledge.
Therefore, lighting a lamp symbolizes
the destruction, through knowledge, of all
negative forces - wickedness, violence,
lust, anger, envy, greed, fear, injustice,
oppression and suffering, etc. Competition
is stiff, and even the little girl in silk frocks
and their finery are watching out for the
best sparklers and flowerpots, the rockets
which light-up the night sky like a thousand
stars. Grown-ups are the soul of generosity.
Ganesh Puja
Ganeshji is a must for Diwali pooja as he is to
be worshiped in all pujas before any other god
or goddess. Traditionally on Diwali night,
Ganesh shares the altar with Lakshmi. Shree
Ganesh is the god of good beginnings and
the fabled remover of obstacles. In the Hindu
pantheon, the two are unrelated, Ganesh
being the son of Shiva and Parvati. However,
when placed side by side, Lakshmi Ganesh
hold out promise of a year of fulfillment, free
from wants.
During the Ganesh puja, the idol of goddess
Lakshmi is placed on the left and Lord
Ganesha is kept on the right. Lakshmi is the
goddess of wealth and prosperity and also
personifies beauty, grace, and charm. She is
normally depicted seated on a lotus with gold
coins. Lord Ganesh has many functions in the
Hindu pantheon. He is the Lord of Wisdom
and the remover of obstacles.
Hindus believe that he must be kept happy
to ensure smooth passage on the road to
accomplishments. For this reason, he is
worshiped together with Lakshmi during
Diwali, the Festival of Lights. Then,
Diwali Significance
Lakshmi is worshiped for wealth and
prosperity, while Ganesh is worshiped first
to ensure that any obstacles to obtaining
wealth and prosperity are removed.
Shri Laxmi-Ganesh Puja takes place on
Diwali by placing their idol on a platform,
making various offerings of sandal paste,
saffron paste, perfume(itr), haldi,
kumkum, abeer, gulal, garland of cotton
beads, flowers, especially the marigold
flowers and leaves of Bel (wood apple
tree). Incense stick is lit and offering of
sweets, coconut, fruits are made. At the end
of pooja, aarti dedicated to Lord Ganesh is
sung by the devotees.
Lakshmi Pooja
Lakshmi was the daughter of the sage
Bhrigu and took refuge in the ocean
of milk when the gods were sent into
exile. Lakshmi was reborn during the
Churning of the Ocean. As soon as the
gods saw Lakshmi, they all fell in love
with her beauty. Shiva claimed Lakshmi
as his wife, but since he had already
taken the Moon, her hand was given to
Vishnu, whom Lakshmi herself preferred.
Lakshmi is the goddess of light, beauty,
good fortune and wealth. While Laxmi is
generally worshiped to achieve success,
she does not reside long with anyone who

Steps of Lakshmi Pooja
Spread a new cloth on a raised platform.
Place a handful of grains in the center and,
on this, place a kalash made of gold, silver
or copper. Fill three-quarter of the kalash
with water and place a supari, a flower, a
coin, and some rice grains in it. Arrange
five kinds of leaves or mango leaves in the
kalash. Place a small dish on the kalash
and fill it with rice grains. Draw a lotus
with turmeric powder ( haldi ) over the
rice grains and place the idol of goddess
Lakshmi over it, along with coins.
Place the idol of Ganesha: In
front of the kalash, on the right (South-
West direction), place the idol of Ganesha.
Also place ink and books related to your
business or occupation on the platform.
Light a lamp and begin the puja by offering
haldi, kumkum, and flowers to the platform
on which the kalash is placed. Then offer
haldi, kumkum, and flowers to the water
that is to be used for the puja. Invoke the
river goddesses to be part of this water.
Invoke goddess: Lakshmi by reciting the
Happy Diwali
Vedic mantras addressed to her. One can
also recite the mantras mentioned in the
Puranas or simply take some flowers in
your hands, close your eyes, and think of
goddess Lakshmi being showered with gold
coins by two elephants standing on either
side of Her and chant Her name. Then offer
the flowers to the idol.
Place the idol of Lakshmi:
Place the idol of Lakshmi in a plate and
bathe it with water, panchamrit (a mixture
of milk, curd, ghee or clarified butter, honey,
and sugar) and then with water containing
some gold ornament or a pearl. Wipe the
idol clean and place it back on the kalash.
Alternately, you can just sprinkle water
and panchamrit on the idol with a flower.
Offerings: Offer sandal paste, saffron
paste, perfume ( itr ), haldi, kumkum,
abeer, and gulal to the goddess. Offer a
garland of cotton beads to the goddess.
Offer flowers, especially the marigold
flowers and leaves of Bel (wood apple
tree). Light an incense stick. Make an
offering of sweets, coconut and fruits.
Make an offering of kheer and halwa.
Pour some puffed rice, coriander seeds
and cumin seeds over the idol. Safe where
you keep money and jewelry; worship
this safe as a symbol of Lord Kuber.
Aarti: Finally, perform the aarti for
goddess Lakshmi. Always remember
that She abhors loud noise. So the aarti
should be accompanied only by a small
bell. Do not clap hands, as is the practice
when performing aarti for other gods. A
peaceful and sublime atmosphere should
prevail during the diwali day pujan. Do
not light crackers while the puja is on or
immediately after it.

Diwali New Year
Diwali or Deepawali, is not only festival
of lights, but also marks the beginning of
the Hindu new year. It is one of the most
important Indian national celebrations as
it is believed that the Hindu goddess of
good luck visits homes that are brightly
lit. Children make “deeps” which are
small clay lamps to light and bring the
good luck goddess to their home so
they can receive new clothes and toys.
The first day of Diwali is also a New
Year of Business. All companies pay
off debts and their cars are decorated
with flowers and palm leaves to bless
the vehicles to run well in the new year.
The customs of wearing new garments
and exchanging gifts and greetings have
come to be associated with Diwali,
probably because of this New Year
celebrations. Accordingly most of the
traditions of a New Year celebration are
all present. The occasion sees the spring-
cleaning and white-washing of houses;
decorative designs or rangolis are painted
on floors and walls to greet the new year.
Fresh flowers, exchanges of gifts, new
clothes, meeting with friends and family,
and feasting are part of the colorful
festival. Each region of India celebrates
Diwali in its own way, but the lighting
of many small earthenware oil lamps
is common throughout the country,
setting homes and gardens aglow with
twinkling lights. The lamps are symbolic
of the victory of the light of goodness and
knowledge over the darkness of evil and
ignorance. The lighting of the lamps is
also a way for people to show thanks for
the good things in their lives.

Who is Jesus Christ?

Reverend Netani Gucake
Some people claim he’s a great teacher.
Others think he’s a prophet. Some dismiss
him as a liar or even a madman. Millions
hail him as Savior and Lord. Whatever
people think of him, nobody can deny that
he stands at the very crux of human history.
The biblical record of his life shows that
Jesus was born to a virgin, lived a sinless
life, taught throughout Palestine for about
three years, was crucified and then rose
back to life three days after his death. The
Bible claims that more than 500 people
saw him alive after this miraculous event.
How could a mere man have lived such
a life? The miracles Jesus performed, his
death on the cross, his resurrection, his
ascent to heaven--all point to the fact that
he was no ordinary leader.
Hundreds of years before Jesus’ birth,
prophets predicted his coming. The Old
Testament, written by many people over a
period of 1,500 years, contains more than
300 such prophecies. All of these details
came true, including his miraculous birth,
his sinless life, his many miracles, his
death and his resurrection.
By his own account, Jesus claimed he had
the power to forgive sins, to cast out demons,
and to determine people’s eternal destiny.
He even declared he himself was God!
Declaring that he was God so angered the
religious and political leaders of his day
that they had him crucified. They buried
him in a borrowed grave, and three days
later, he rose from the dead.
The resurrection of Jesus is what makes
Christianity unique. In fact, the validity
of Christianity hinges on the proof of the
resurrection of Jesus. If the resurrection
never took place, then the Christian faith
is based on a lie and people have no true
hope for life after they die. But if it is true,
then we can do nothing else but accept
Jesus as Savior and Lord and receive his
gift of love and forgiveness.
Throughout the centuries, most great
scholars who have considered the proofs
of the resurrection have believed, and still
believe that Jesus is alive.
The Old Testament (the part of the
Bible written before Jesus’ birth) was
completed in 450BC, hundreds of years
before Jesus was born. The prophecies
were made in astonishing detail by many
people throughout these books.
For instance, the Old Testament indicated
Jesus would be betrayed by someone he
trusted, “Even my close friend whom I
trusted, he who has shared my bread, has
lifted up his heel against me” (Psalm 41:9).
The New Testament, which records Jesus’
life and resurrection, reveals that one of the
12 people Jesus chose to be part of his inner
circle betrayed him, “Then Judas Iscariot,
one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests
to betray Jesus to them” (Mark 14:19).
More than 300 prophecies like this were
made in the Old Testament and then
fulfilled through Jesus’ life, death and
resurrection. The chances of one person
fulfilling a mere 8 of these prophecies are
1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000. For one
person to fulfill 48 of these prophecies, the
number becomes staggering--1 chance in 10
to the 157th power (1 with 157 zeros after
it). Add to that the 250 other prophecies
and it becomes impossible for any other
person except Jesus to ever fit that particular
sequence of time and events.
In his famous book Mere Christianity,
C.S. Lewis makes this statement, “A
man who was merely a man and said the
sort of things Jesus said would not be a
great moral teacher. He would either be a
lunatic--on the level with a man who says
he is a poached egg--or he would be the
devil of hell. You must take your choice.
Either this was, and is, the Son of God,
or else a madman or something worse.
You can shut him up for a fool or you can
fall at his feet and call him Lord and God.
But let us not come with any patronizing
nonsense about his being a great human
teacher. He has not left that open to us.”
Jesus could only have been one of four
things: a legend, a liar, a lunatic--or Lord
and God. There is so much historical and
archeological evidence to support his
existence that every reputable historian
agrees he was not just a legend. If he were
a liar, why would he die for his claim,
when he could easily have avoided such a
cruel death with a few choice words? And,
if he were a lunatic, how did he engage
in intelligent debates with his opponents
or handle the stress of his betrayal and
crucifixion while continuing to show a
deep love for his antagonists? He said he
was Lord and God. The evidence supports
that claim.

technical advisor Greg Mumm is
coaching at an age where many players
are hitting the peak of their career. But
Mumm’s tender years belies the fact he
is arguably the most promising coach –
young or old - in international rugby.
Having taken up coaching at the age of
19, after a knee injury had curtailed his
playing career, Mumm has now been
coaching for 11 years and coaching
professionally for the last five years.
During this period Mumm has already
racked up achievements that would be
the envy of any top level coach.
Most notable of these include:
- Being involved with premiership
winning sides in each of his five years
with Sydney University culminating in
this year’s premiership final victory over
Randwick by the remarkable score of
46-6.
- He was the only Australian coach,
and very possibly the only coach in any

Unwin Park - Solovi Southern Cross with special
breeds won 3-2 on a shootout over Nawaka Royals
in the tradition Diwali cup challenge match Sunday.
Avikesh Reddy and Melvin Achari were on target
as Solovi struck a blow early in the game.
Reddy put Royals to the cross 10 minutes into a
fiery contest.
Southern Cross kept pushing forward with a lot of
heart, a bad play deep in the Royal zone allowed
striker Melvin Achari to tap in his first, Southern
Cross’s 2nd goal after defender Appu Mudaliar
weaved in a quality through ball between 2 central
defenders.
Live wire Reddy was a constant threat, playing alongside
his dad, veteran defender Mun Reddy. Reddys’ Southern
Cross dominated 2-0 in the first half.

It was an emphatic victory that ends 25 year playing
drought for 2 players who would otherwise never
be a part of any Diwali soccer tournament.
Nawaka Royals defender, Ilshad Ali and Solovi
Southern Cross midfielder, Asuad Ali celebrated
the inclusion with renewed hope and a tale to go
with it for the next 25 years.
For Ali’s anticipation is something of the past,
the two played with the friends this past Sunday
at Unwin Park. Say, “it meant the world to them”.
Both season campaigners had played Diwali
soccer games for the respective teams in Fiji on
numerous occasions but current rules preclude
them participation.
“We certainly respect other organizations
governance”, Ali said. Still feels this is one
tournament every one should be allowed to
partake.
Everyone celebrates Christmas, Eid and Diwali;
it is one game everyone looks forward too.
“I don’t see a reason why we can’t play here.
“We got included purely based on true friendship
and respect,” Ilshad Ali said. “Munesh and Appu
certainly made us feel we are no different than the
rest, it makes us both feel proud and can’t thank
them enough.
“Believe me I had never imagined I would get
to play in a Diwali cup match, ever,” said Asuad
Ali.” “Dreams do come true.”
The two Ali’s played an important role for their
teams Sunday.
Organizer Munesh Raj said having them was
a pleasure, we have played all summer, and it
would be unfair to exclude them.
Raj said the two would feature in more similar
games. “This is the first year of such game, and it
will not be the last.”
“People have an appetite for Diwali soccer,” Raj
said.
It has been a long-standing tradition in Fiji that
everyone participates with friends and family.
The much-anticipated fixture in Fiji; people
anxiously await the Diwali arrival so they either
could play in singles games or verse married in
challenge matches.
“This is one time people of all cast, creed and
religion come out in numbers to show their
respect, play and celebrate Diwali,” Raj stated.
He said many in Fiji play pick up soccer, which is
a popular event among variety of other activities
during the day and later every one gets together
for sweets and a big feast.
“It is all about brotherhood and love for one
another for the joyous occasion,” said Raj.
“When do you see me score goals? Asuad asked.
The 2 goals I scored have a reason; “one for my
brother Appal Naidu and one half for Rakesh
Kumar and Anand Simon, my other halves to this
day, this is my little Diwali gift to them”.
His other goal was from the final spot kick. “The
moment is etched in history,” Ali’s said.
Ali dedicated his victory to his first Diwali Cup
coach, Masla Mani (kaka) who peacefully passed
away in Fiji on Thursday. He was a wonderful
coach with a lot of humor. “Kaka you nicknamed
me Salim and I still cherish who you were
comparing me with.” Ali said. It was an honor.

When is the best time to plan my trip?
It’s difficult to predict when there will be a
backlog of cars waiting to cross the border.
If you live close to the border, you can gauge
traffic flow by checking the Canada Border
Services Agency’s website which updates

Quick Meal Ideas
Here are some ideas for easy meals
and appetizers using the following
ingredients:
Grab a bag of combination frozen
vegetables and:
• Add to pasta during the last 3 minutes
of cooking time. Drain. Toss with
reduced-fat salad dressing and cooked
diced chicken for an easy salad.
• Cook and pile on cooked pizza crusts.
Drizzle with reduced-fat salad dressing
and top with low-fat mozzarella cheese.
Bake to melt the cheese.
•Stir-fry with cooked chicken or
seafood. Add in lite soy sauce. Serve
over rice or noodles.
What is influenza?
Influenza, often called the ‘flu’, is an
infection of the nose, throat and lungs
caused by an influenza virus.
A person with influenza is also at risk
of other infections. These include viral
or bacterial pneumonia, an infection of
the lungs. The risk of complications is
greater for seniors 65 years and older,
very young children, and people who
have lung or heart diseases, certain
chronic health problems, or weakened
immune systems.
In Canada, it is estimated that up to
7,000 people die from influenza and its
complications every year.
How can influenza be prevented?
You can reduce the risk of catching
influenza, or spreading it to others, by
washing your hands regularly, eating
well and exercising, and getting the
influenza vaccine.
Influenza vaccine, also known as a flu
shot, can help prevent you from getting
sick with influenza or from spreading
it to others. In British Columbia, the
vaccine is available in October or

DIABETES AND NUTRITION
Open some flour tortillas and:
• Cut into wedges and spray generously
with nonstick cooking spray. Bake at
400 degrees until crisp. Sprinkle with
dried herbs before baking if desired.
•Spread reduced-fat cream cheese onto
tortillas. Top with thinly sliced meat
or vegetables. Roll up, wrap in plastic
wrap and chill. Stick toothpicks into roll
1 inch apart. Cut between the toothpicks
for an easy snack or appetizer.
• Do the same as above, except use 4
tortillas and spread with cream cheese.
Add on meat or vegetables and stack
the tortillas on each other until all
ingredients are used. Cut into wedges
to serve.
Use a can of tomatoes and:
• Drain and toss with hot pasta, herbs
and a dash of Parmesan cheese.
• Add one 14 1/2-ounce can undrained
diced tomatoes in place of  1/2 cup
water when preparing instant rice.
• Add to a slow cooker with chicken
recipes in place of 1 cup water.
•Add drained, diced Italian-style
tomatoes on top of turkey meatloaf
during the last 15 minutes of baking
instead of tomato sauce.
•Add  1/2 up drained, diced tomatoes
to a bowl of hot tomato soup for extra
flavor.
Select a bag of frozen corn and:
• Make Quick Succotash. Combine
1 box frozen lima beans with 1 cup
frozen corn kernels, a thinly sliced
early November. It is best to try to get
the influenza vaccine by the end of
November to allow your body enough
time – about two weeks – to build
immunity before the influenza season
starts. However, the vaccine can offer
protection if given at any time during
the season.
How is influenza spread?
Influenza spreads easily from person
to person through breathing, coughing
and sneezing. The virus can also spread
when a person touches tiny droplets
from coughs or sneezes on another
person or on an object, and then touches
his or her own mouth or nose before
washing his or her hands.
Symptoms can begin about one to four
days, or an average of two days, after a
person is first exposed to the influenza
virus. Fever and other symptoms can
usually last 7 to 10 days, with cough
and weakness possibly lasting one to
two weeks more.
An infected person can spread the
influenza virus even before feeling
onion, 1 cup milk and a pinch of honey
in a saucepan. Bring to boil and cook
on a simmer for 20 minutes until limas
are tender and milk is reduced to a
few Tbsps. Increase the heat and stir
constantly until milk is just glazed over
the vegetables.
• Make Easy Corn Chowder. Combine
1 Tbsp olive oil with 1 medium onion
in a medium saucepan and cook until
onion is golden. Add 2 diced medium
potatoes and toss for a few minutes.
Add 2 cups fat-free (skim) milk and
fresh ground pepper. Simmer for 15
minutes. Add 2 cups frozen corn and
return to a simmer.
Buy a carton of eggs or egg substitute
and:
• Make Quick Spanish-Style Eggs.
Scramble eggs in a nonstick skillet
with diced onion and peppers. Pile into
a warmed whole-wheat or corn tortilla.
Roll up. Top with bottled salsa.
• Make Indian-Style Eggs. Add hard-
boiled eggs to cooked brown rice. Add
a few drops of olive oil and raisins or
currants and lightly sautéed chopped
apple.

•Toss rehydrated mushrooms with
shaped pastas, olive oil and sauted
garlic.
•Fill an omelet with rehydrated
mushrooms and bean sprouts and top
with a little soy sauce.

•Top any homemade pizza with
rehydrated mushrooms.
• Rehydrate 1 cup dried mushrooms and
saute in a little olive oil. Add a clove of
minced garlic and pile high on 4 pieces
of toasted French bread (1 oz each) for
a delicious appetizer.
Find a jar of roasted red peppers
and:
• Puree 2 roasted peppers with 2 tsps
olive oil and 1 tsp capers. Spread on 4
slices of toast for a nice appetizer.
• Toss roasted peppers with pasta and
rehydrated sun-dried tomatoes.
•Slice into strips and place on
homemade pizzas.
• Toss chopped roasted red peppers into
chicken soup.
Take a package of reduced-fat cream
cheese and:
• Soften 1 cup cream cheese and mix
with 2 Tbsps sugar-free strawberry jam.
Spread on 6 slices whole-grain toast.
• Mix 3 Tbsps into 1 pound of hot
mashed potatoes. Add minced chives
for extra flavor.
• Spread 2/3 cup softened cream cheese
over 4 slices French bread. Place under
the broiler for 2 minutes. Top with slices
of ripe tomato and sliced cucumber.

If you do get sick with influenza or
the flu, home treatment can help to
ease symptoms. Home treatment may
include:
• Get plenty of rest. Bed rest will also
help you avoid spreading the virus to
others.
• Drink plenty of extra fluids to replace
those lost from fever.
• Avoid smoking and breathing other
people's smoke.
• Breathe moist air from a hot shower
or from a sink filled with hot water to
help clear a stuffy nose.
• Anti-influenza drugs or antivirals
are available by prescription, but these
must be started early. They will shorten
symptoms by about 3 days if given within
12 hours and by about 1.5 days if given
within 2 days of the start of symptoms.
Over-the-counter medications can help
relieve symptoms such as pain and fever.
These are not recommended for children
under 6 years of age. Non-prescription
influenza remedies are also available at
the pharmacy.

Bhojpuri film will be shot at Bangkok.

The Year has really been a hectic year
for you?
As you already know that I had many
films to be completed for that year;
has been one of the reasons of keeping
me really occupied. Initially I have
been busy in looking after my national
and international stage shows. These
shows have a complete team including
the popular heroine of my film ‘Nirhua
Rikshawala” Pakhi Hegde and my
younger brother and artist Praveshlal
Yadav. These shows have been the reason
of me not being able to give proper to my
films. Then I decided to invest my entire
time into my films. Films take away
most of my time because I myself sing
for my films. I have also sung for other”s
films also. I have my albums” work also
going on.
That means now there is a full stop to
the international visits?
No, in fact it is the other way round.
This is ideally the most appropriate
time for the international visits to
happen for me. My shows have earned
immense popularity overseas and thus
a different territory has been created.
There have been so many films made
in Bhojpuri but no film has been so
popular abroad. My film has inclined
the minds of the overseas distributors
to seriously promote Bhojpuri films.
Even the Bhojpuri albums have gained
the attention of the overseas. One of my
promoters confirmed having hearing my
Bhojpuri album once in America. So
now my trip to America and Canada is a
sure shot plan. We are making concrete
plans for the travel.

At the recent grand opening of the Newton
Cultural Centre, the Surrey Board of Trade
presented a cheque to the Arts Council of
Surrey in the amount of $1,000.00 that will
be utilized for the cultural centre.
The President of the Surrey Board of Trade,
Nigel Watkinson, said, Our world is truly
a global economy, driven by information,
ideas and discoveries. It is a creative
economy, where art and culture are the
building blocks of innovation, invention
and understanding. This cultural centre
epitomizes the makings of Surreys creative
economy by being a training ground and
ICBC gives all Olympic license
plate revenue to VANOC
Deal made before the Games
ICBC says it’s handed over all revenue from
Olympic license plates to VANOC to support
future Canadian athletes. The organizing
committee got an added bonus out of the deal.
A $16 million agreement was signed between
VANOC and ICBC before the Games, says
ICBCs Adam Grossman. Most of that goes to
supporting athletes, but some went to insuring
the organizing committee’s vehicle fleet.
