SAFETY
NOTE
OPERATOR IS REQUIRED TO READ
ENTIRE INSTRUCTION MANUAL.
1.1 GENERAL
Sullair Corporation and its subsidiaries design and
manufacture all of their products so they can be
operated safely. However, the responsibility for safe
operation rests with those who use and maintain
these products. The following safety precautions are
offered as a guide which, if conscientiously followed,
will minimize the possibility of accidents throughout
the useful life of this equipment.
The filters should be operated only by those who
have been trained and delegated to do so, and who
have read and understood this Operator's Manual.
Failure to follow the instructions, procedures and
safety precautions in this manual may result in
accidents and injuries.
DANGER
NEVER start the compressor unless it is safe
to do so. DO NOT attempt to operate the com-
pressor with a known unsafe condition.
Tag the filter and render it inoperative by
disconnecting and locking out all power at source or
otherwise disabling its prime mover so others who
may not know of the unsafe condition cannot attempt
to operate it until the condition is corrected.
Install, use and operate the filter only in full
compliance with all pertinent OSHA regulations and/
or any applicable Federal, State, and Local codes,
standards and regulations. DO NOT modify the filter
and/or controls in any way except with written factory
approval.
1.2 PERSONAL PROTECTIVE
EQUIPMENT
A. Prior to installing or operating the filter, owners,
employers and users should become familiar
with, and comply with, all applicable OSHA regu-
lations and/or any applicable Federal, State and
Local codes, standards, and regulations relative
to personal protective equipment, such as eye
and face protective equipment, respiratory pro-
tective equipment, equipment intended to protect
the extremities, protective clothing, protective
shields and barriers and electrical protective
equipment, as well as noise exposure adminis-
trative and/or engineering controls and/or per-
sonal hearing protective equipment.
1.3 PRESSURE RELEASE
A. Secure all hose connections by wire, chain or
other suitable retaining device to prevent tools or
hose ends from being accidentally disconnected
and expelled.
B. Vent all internal pressure prior to opening any
line, fitting, hose, valve, drain plug, connection or
other component, such as filters and line oilers,
and before attempting to refill optional air line
anti-icer systems with antifreeze compound.
C. Keep personnel out of line with and away from
the discharge opening of hoses or tools or other
points of compressed air discharge.
D. DO NOT use air at pressures higher than 2.1 bar
for cleaning purposes, and then only with effec-
tive chip guarding and personal protective equip-
ment per OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.242 (b)
and/or any applicable Federal, State, and Local
codes, standards and regulations.
E. DO NOT engage in horseplay with air hoses as
death or serious injury may result.

1.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION
A. Clean up spills of lubricant or other combustible
substances immediately, if such spills occur.
B. DO NOT use flammable solvents for cleaning
purposes.
C. Disconnect and lock out all power at source prior
to attempting any repairs or cleaning of the filter,
if any.
D. Remove any acoustical material or other material
that may be damaged by heat or that may sup-
port combustion and is in close proximity, prior to
attempting weld repairs.
E. DO NOT attempt to operate the filter in any clas-
sification of hazardous environment unless the
compressor has been specially designed and
manufactured for that duty.
1.5 HOT SURFACES, SHARP
EDGES AND SHARP
CORNERS
A. Avoid bodily contact with hot fluid, hot coolant,
hot surfaces and sharp edges and corners.
B. Keep all parts of the body away from all points of
air discharge.
C. Wear personal protective equipment including
gloves and head covering when working in, on or
around the filter.
D. Keep a first aid kit handy. Seek medical assis-
tance promptly in case of injury. DO NOT ignore
small cuts and burns as they may lead to infec-
tion

1.6 TOXIC AND IRRITATING
SUBSTANCES
A. DO NOT use air from this filter for respiration
(breathing) except in full compliance with OSHA
Standards 29 CFR 1910 and/or any applicable
Federal, State or Local codes or regulations.
DANGER
Death or serious injury can result from
inhaling compressed air without using
proper safety equipment. See OSHA stan-
dards and/or any applicable Federal, State,
and Local codes, standards and regulations
on safety equipment.
B. DO NOT use air line anti-icer systems in air lines
supplying respirators or other breathing air utili-
zation equipment and DO NOT discharge air
from these systems into unventilated or other
confined areas.
C. Wear goggles or a full face shield when adding
antifreeze compound to air line anti-icer systems.
D. If air line anti-icer system antifreeze compound
enters the eyes or if fumes irritate the eyes, they
should be washed with large quantities of clean
water for fifteen minutes. A physician, preferably
an eye specialist, should be contacted immedi-
ately.
E. DO NOT store air line anti-icer system antifreeze
compound in confined areas.
F. The antifreeze compound used in air line anti-
freeze systems contains methanol and is toxic,
harmful or fatal if swallowed. Avoid contact with
the skin or eyes and avoid breathing the fumes. If
swallowed, induce vomiting by administering a
tablespoon of salt, in each glass of clean, warm
water until vomit is clear, then administer two
teaspoons of baking soda in a glass of clean
water. Have patient lay down and cover eyes to
exclude light. Call a physician immediately.

DANGER
All field equipment must be tested for elec-
trostatic fields prior to servicing or making
contact with the machine using the follow-
ing or equivalent test equipment:
• 90-600 VAC: Volt detector such as
Fluke Model 1AC-A
• 600-7000 VAC: Voltage detector
such as Fluke Networks Model
C9970
It is the responsibility of each organization
to provide/arrange training for all their
associates expected to test for electrostatic
fields.
1.7 LIFTING
A. If the filter is provided with a lifting bail, then lift
by the bail provided. If no bail is provided, then lift
by sling. Filters to be air-lifted by helicopter must
not be supported by the lifting bail but by slings
instead. In any event, lift and/or handle only in
full compliance with OSHA standards 29 CFR
1910 subpart N and/or any applicable Federal,
State, and Local codes, standards and regula-
tions.
B. Inspect points of attachment for cracked welds
and for cracked, bent, corroded or otherwise
degraded members and for loose bolts or nuts
prior to lifting.
C. Make sure entire lifting, rigging and supporting
structure has been inspected, is in good condi-
tion and has a rated capacity of at least the
weight of the filter. If you are unsure of the
weight, then weigh filter before lifting.
D. Make sure lifting hook has a functional safety
latch or equivalent, and is fully engaged and
latched on the bail or slings.
E. Use guide ropes or equivalent to prevent twisting
or swinging of the compressor once it has been
lifted clear of the ground.
F. DO NOT attempt to lift in high winds.
G. Keep all personnel out from under and away
from the filter whenever it is suspended.
H. Lift filter no higher than necessary.
I. Keep lift operator in constant attendance when-
ever filter is suspended.
J. Set filter down only on a level surface capable of
safely supporting at least its weight and its load-
ing unit.
K. When moving the filter by forklift truck, utilize fork
pockets if provided. Otherwise, utilize pallet if
provided. If neither fork pockets or pallet are pro-
vided, then make sure compressor is secure and
well balanced on forks before attempting to raise
or transport it any significant distance.
L. Make sure forklift truck forks are fully engaged
and tipped back prior to lifting or transporting the
filter.
M. Forklift no higher than necessary to clear obsta-
cles at floor level and transport and corner at
minimum practical speeds.
N. Make sure pallet-mounted filters are firmly bolted
or otherwise secured to the pallet prior to
attempting to forklift or transport them. NEVER
attempt to forklift a compressor that is not
secured to its pallet, as uneven floors or sudden
stops may cause the compressor to tumble off,
possibly causing serious injury or property dam-
age in the process.
1.8 ENTRAPMENT
A. If the filter enclosure, if any, is large enough to
hold a man and if it is necessary to enter it to per-
form service adjustments, inform other personnel
before doing so, or else secure and tag the
access door in the open position to avoid the
possibility of others closing and possibly latching
the door with personnel inside.
B. Make sure all personnel are out of filter before
closing and latching enclosure doors.

COMPRESSED AIR FILTERS
2.1 SAFETY INFORMATION
WARNING
Disconnect or depressurize compressed air
line prior to any installation or maintenance
activity. Eye protection goggles or safety
glasses are always recommended during
installation and maintenance.
WARNING
Air is not for breathing purposes. Activated
carbon filters are intended for odor removal
and are not intended for removal of CO
(Carbon Monoxide) or CO2 (Carbon
Dioxide).
2.2 DESCRIPTION
Sullair Compressed Air Filters have been designed
to remove airborne contamination in a compressed
air stream, delivering energy efficient operation and
reliable performance. The air filters have multiple
ranges of efficiencies for a full range of industrial
applications. See Table 2-1:Element Specifications.
Filter combinations are to meet specific application
requirements. Filters comply with PED and perform
as per related ISO 8573 standards.
2.2.1 FX FILTERS
1/4” to 3” NPT up to 1600 cfm
These filters (except type C) may be equipped with
differential pressure gauge.
PED (Pressure Equipment Directive)
A protected auto float drain (2 mm orifice) is standard
for reliable removal of liquid contaminant (minimum

pressure required for auto float drain is 30 psig).
Zero-porosity aluminum and durable epoxy powder-
coat finish, along with a corrosion-resistant internal
coating gives long service life. These filters are
equipped with differential pressure gauges for easy
maintenance and energy efficiency. Sullair
Condensate Separators are always recommended
with this system.
2.2.2 FW FILTERS
3” to 14” FLG up to 17,700 cfm
The filter housing is made of steel and externally
painted with epoxy powder paint. These filters are
equipped with differential pressure gauge as
standard.
A protected auto float drain (2 mm orifice) is standard
for reliable removal of liquid contaminants. Zero-
porosity aluminum and durable epoxy powder-coat
finish, along with a corrosion-resistant internal
coating gives long service life. These filters may be
equipped with differential pressure gauges for easy
maintenance and energy efficiency. Sullair
Condensate Separators are always recommended
with this system.
2.2.3 FHP FILTERS
1/4” to 2-1/2” NPT up to 1750 cfm (725 psi)
(See Connect sizes starting on page 19).
Manual drain is supplied as standard. The product is
made of zero prosity aluminum which is anodized
inside and out, then finished in a durable epoxy
powder coating to provide a corrosion-resistant long
service life. No gauge is applied on these filters.
(There is no moisture separator for high pressure.)

2.5 INSTALLATION
(ALL EXCEPT FW)
1. For optimum performance, connections must
be sized to fit inlet and outlet piping.
2. Cut the air supply and discharge of air.
3. Adjust the filter height so that drain accesso-
ries (such as timer drain or external drains)
can be fitted and the bowl can still be
removed.
4. The filters must be mounted in a vertical
position.
5. Connect the housing to the Pipeline. Pay
attention to the arrow indicating airflow direc-
tion.
6. Check the filter head and bowl and make
sure that they are connected and tightened
properly.
7. Connect the system to the air supply and
then check the connections under pressure
for any air leaks.
8. Keep all personnel out from under and away
from the filter whenever it is suspended. G.
Lift filter no higher than necessary.
9. Keep lift operator in constant attendance
whenever filter is suspended.

2.6 FW (WELDED FLANGE
FILTER) LOCATION
The FW and Mist Eliminators are large and heavy
free standing filters. It is strongly recommended that
these filters are installed on the floor with their weight
supported by the stands provided. All other models
are inline filters. The filter should be located in a
pipeline that is level and strong enough to support its
total weight. Pipe supports are recommended within
5 ft of each side of the filter if it is not otherwise
supported.
2.7 SERVICE AIR PIPING
Direction of airflow is critical to filter performance.
Please follow air flow directional arrows and/or inlet
and outlet decals. Filters will not operate correctly if
installed backwards. Provide sufficient space above
or below the unit (as applicable) to remove filter
element(s). Compressed air piping should be at least
of equal size to that furnished on the inlet and outlet
ports with block and bypass valves to permit isolation
of the unit for servicing and element replacement.
WARNING
Pressure vessel MUST be installed accord-
ing to ASME as well as applicable local/
state codes. Failure to install properly may
cause danger or injury to persons or dam-
age to property.

2.8 MAINTENANCE & DAILY
OPERATION
(See Figure 2-4 and Figure 2-5)
DAILY: Check the function of the installed drain (if
applicable) and relief valve to ensure they are
operating properly.
DRAIN INSPECTION, CLEANING OR
REPLACEMENT
1. For external drains, close drain isolation
valve & DEPRESSURIZE drain by opening
vent valve.
2. Remove drain(s) & clean or replace as
necessary according to the respective drain
manual.
3. Reattach the drain(s). Ensure fitted correctly
then slowly open the isolation valve to re-
pressurize.
F/H Coalescing and Particulate Type Elements:
Filter performance will decrease dramatically after
approximately 1 year due to deterioration of the
fragile fibers of the filtration media caused by the
acidicity of the condensate & bombardment by fast
moving particles. This most often occurs with little or
no increase in differential pressure. Filter elements
MUST be changed annually regardless of differential
pressure. More frequent replacement is
recommended if differential pressure exceeds 5 psid
—which may suggests blockage by excessive
contamination.
FILTERS AND MOISTURE SEPARATORS
Activated Carbon filter element life is directly
dependant upon the temperature of the air it is
filtering. Activated Carbon elements are designed to
provide 1000 hours of service at 70ºF (21ºC). At
cooler temperatures, more oil is in liquid form (and is
therefore removed by the upstream coalescing filter)
and less oil is in vapour form, so element life will be
longer. At warmer temperatures, more oil is in vapour
form and therefore the element life will be shorter– so
always use carbon filters at the lowest temperature
possible. Maximum recommended operating
temperature is 86ºF (30ºC). If possible monitor
downstream oil vapour content, and simply replace
elements when oil vapour exceeds desired levels.
MIST ELIMINATOR: Includes a true air/oil separator
element with coarse fibers designed to slow
deterioration. Element should be changed every 5
years or when the pressure drop of exceeds 1 psid.

2.8.1 FX AND FHP FILTERS–REMOVING AIR
FILTER BODY AND REPLACING THE
ELEMENT

WARNING
Filter housing must be fully depressurized
before attempting to install dp gauge, drain,
replace elements or perform any mainte-
nance.Failure to install properly may cause
danger or injury to persons or damage to
property. See below for how to depressurize
the FX filters.

1. Filter elements must be replaced once

per year or when the differential pressure
indicator turns from green to red. Perfor-
mance should be monitored.
2. IMPORTANT: Shutoff the air supply and
discharge all pressure to the filter.
3. Remove the air filter body from the
housing, (see Figure 2-4).

4. Take out the dirty element, (see
Figure 2-5).
5. Check the O-ring on the new
element and install the element into the
housing.
6. Check the O-ring in the head of
housing. Replace if necessary with
O-ring provided with the replacement
element.
7. Clean and lubricate the threads (with non-
petroleum based lubricant for some specific
applications) on the body before reassembly.
8. Connect the system to the air supply.
9. Check for leakage.

FX FILTERS DEPRESSURIZATION

Before dismantling the filter, make sure that
the filter is depressurized.

In order to discharge compressed air, turn
the bottom nut of the drain in the counter-
clockwise direction. WARNING
Before repressurizing the filter, make sure
that the nut is turned clockwise completely.

2.8.2 FW FILTERS & MIST ELIMINATORS–
REMOVING AIR FILTER BODY AND
REPLACING THE ELEMENT
1. Filter elements must be replaced once
per year for FX or once every five years for
mist eliminators or when the differential pres-
sure indicator turns from green to red. Per-
formance should be monitored.
2. IMPORTANT: Cut the air supply and
discharge all pressure to the filter.
3. Remove the nuts and bolts holding the cover
of the filter housing.

4. Take out the dirty element(s). Remove wing
nut from the tie rod and remove dirty ele-
ment(s), install new element on the tie rod
and replace wing nut.
5. Inspect all gaskets and clean inside of filter
housing (if required).
6. Inspect inside of housing for corrosion or
damage.
7. Replace cover and tighten flange bolts
evenly.
8. After unit is re-assembled, check for air leaks
& record initial pressure drop.

CONDENSATE SEPARATORS
3.1 DESCRIPTION
Sullair Condensate Separators have been designed
for the removal of bulk liquid water and particulate
from compressed air and gases. Unique centrifugal
action removes contaminants with low-pressure drop
for energy savings. Sullair Condensate Separators
are available in 1/4” – 3” NPT pipe sizes for flows up
to 1600 SCFM (2718 m3/hour). While highly efficient,
condensate separators will not remove 100% of the
oil from the air stream. Additional coalescing and
particulate filters downstream are normally required
to remove the final traces of oil, water and particles,
which migrate through the separator.

3.2 UNPACKING 3.3 FEATURES

Handle carefully. Check the packing list to account
for all items. Visually inspect for shipping damage. If
damaged, immediately file a claim with the carrier.

3.4 SAFETY INFORMATION
WARNING
Disconnect or depressurize compressed air
line prior to any installation or maintenance
activity. Eye protection goggles or safety
glasses are always recommended
during installation and maintenance.

3.5 INSTALLATION
1. To get optimum performance there must be a
suitable connection that fits the inlet and out-
let piping.
2. Cut the air supply and discharge remainder
of air.
3. Adjust the condensate separator height with
respect to other component parts of system.
4. The condensate separator must always be
mounted in a vertical position.
5. Connect the housing to the system. Pay
attention to the arrow direction,which indi-
cates airflow outlet.
6. Check the condensate separator body mak-
ing sure that it is connected properly.
7. Connect the system to the air supply and
then check the condensate separator under
pressure.

3.6 MAINTENANCE
Normally shipped for use with timer drain. See below
for float drain maintenance.
Except for occasional replacement of timer drain and
cleaning of the strainer inside the ball valve the
condensate separator is maintenance free
3.6.1 REPLACEMENT OF FLOAT DRAIN
(WHERE APPLICABLE WITH
FLOAT DRAIN)
1. Cut the air supply and discharge pressure to
the condensate separator.
2. Pull the body off of the head by turning body
counterclockwise.
3. Check the O-ring in the head of housing.
Replace if necessary.
4. Remove old float drain and replace float 1
drain by loosening external nut at bottom of
bowl. Remove old float drain. Insert new float
and resecure with the new external nut.
5. Clean and lubricate the threads of the body
before reconnecting head.
6. Connect the system to the air supply to
check for any leakages.
