Problem 1: A house has a composite wall as shown in the figure.

Indoor temperature is +20 C

and outdoor temperature is 6 C. The average convection heat transfer coefficient between
inner side of the wall and the room air is 8 W/(m2·K). The average convection heat transfer
coefficient between the outer side of the wall and ambient air is 23 W/(m2·K). To decrease the
heat transfer in the rate of 25%, an insulation material of thermal conductivity k = 0.04 W/(m.K)
is placed between the brick and the interior plaster.

a) Determine the overall heat transfer coefficient and heat transfer rate from the area of 25 m 2
of the wall in case that there isn’t an insulation material.
b) Determine the insulation thickness.
c) Determine the temperature of the inner and outer side of the wall in case of insulation.
d) Determine the highest temperature inside of the insulation material.

Problem 2: A wall with a thickness of 2 cm will be insulated by a material whose thermal
conductivity is k = 0.35 W/(m·K). The thermal conductivity of the wall is 1.3 W/(m·K). The
temperatures of the inner and outer surface of the wall are 1300 C and 30 C respectively. If
the heat flux is 1830 W/m2, determine the insulation thickness.
