Ethics in compensation
Compensation or reward is the payment to an employee in return for his or her
contribution to the organization . compensation occupies an important place in the
life of an employees . his or her standard of living status in the society ,
motivation , loyalty , and productivity depends upon the compensation he or she
receives . for the employer too, employee compensation ho or she receives . for the
employer too, employee compensation is significant because of its contribution to
the cost of production . besides , many battles ( in the form of strikes and lockouts )
are fought between the employer and the employees on issues relating to wages or
bonus , forb HRM too, employees compensation is a major function . the HR
specialist has difficult task of fixing wages and wage differentials acceptable to
employees and their leaders . A typical compensation of an employees comprises
of financial as well as non – financial compensation .

The compensation comprises of following elements :

1 ) Base salaries

2 ) Annual incentive plan

3)Long – term incentive

4)Executive perquisites

Workplace Harassment of employee


Workplace harassment is any type of unwelcome action towards an employee that
leads to difficulty in performing assigned tasks or causes the employees to feel he/
she is working in hostile environment the harassment may be based on factor such
as race, gender, culture age , sexual orientation or religious or political
preferences . in many countries there are laws that protect employees from
enduring this type of on -the -job abuse , if the reality of the harassment can be
proven.
Harassment leads to feeling of exploitation .exploitation means an act to keeping
employees as slave and bonded . harassment covers wide range of offensive
behavior . it is commonly understood as behavior that is intended to disturb or
upset any employee it is unlawful for any employer to discriminate on the basis of
sex , caste , race, gender , etc.

Type of Workplace Harassment

1) Emotional harassment : Unlike physical harassment , emotional harassment is


unnoticeable and also viewed as being more socially acceptable . Naturally
emotional harassment in the workplace , which perpetuates the issue of emotional
harassment in the workplace , which perpetuates the issue of emotional harassment
in the workplace .

2 ) Physical Harassment : Another form of physical harassment at work is


workplace violence , workplace violence is defined as physical threats and assaults
targeted at employees there are two main perpetrators for workplace violence –
criminals who approached as clients , and co – workers . the criminals assert
violence through the forms of robberies and homicides .

3 ) Sexual Harassment : Sexual harassment is a serious offence that can get


offenders into trouble . employers can be held liable for damages in cases where
an employee sues because of sexual harassment from a supervisor or another
employees. This is why so many companies now mandate a sexual harassment
prevention programme for their new hires . there are two types of legally
recognized way of committing sexual harassment at workplace :

1) Quid pro quo sexual Harassment

2) Hostile environment sexual Harassment

4) Verbal Harassment : Another unethical activity causing exploitation of


workers is verbal harassment . verbal harassment in the workplace . like sexual
harassment in the workplace , like sexual harassment , is a violation of the civil
rights . this type of abuse in the workplace happens , when one person is guilty of
unwelcome verbal conduct that is discriminatory .
Any verbal harassment related to race ,colour , religion , sex , gender, identity , age
, disability , sexual orientation or for purpose of retaliation can be a violation of
the law is some circumstance . if the conduct creates a hostile work environment or
a supervisor’s harassment ends in the demotion , termination , or reduction in
benefits for an employees , then it is considered a violation `

Impact of workplace Harassment


Workplace harassment can have a significant negative impact on both people and
business :

1 ) How workplace Harassment can affect a person : there are a range of


psychological and physical illnesses and injuries that an individual who continues
to be exposed to workplace harassment may experience . the effects of workplace
harassment may experience . the effects of workplace harassment on a person may
include :

1) High levels of distress , impaired ability to make decision and poor


concentration ;

ii ) Loss of self – confidence and self – esteem and feelings of social isolation at
work ;

iii) panic attacks ,anxiety disorders , depression , social phobia ( withdrawal from
usual social interaction ) and deteriorating relationships with family and friends ;

iv ) Reduced output and performance , incapacity to work , loss of employment ;


and

v) sleep disturbance , such an insomnia or severe tiredness .

2 ) How workplace Harassment can affect a business : It makes good business


sense to ensure workplace harassment can have significant human and financial
costs for a business and can lead to :

i) The breakdown of teams and individual relationship;

ii) poor worker health


iii Reduced efficiency , productivity and profitability;

iv Bad publicity , poor public image – becoming ‘ known’ as a difficult workplace


environment;

v increased absenteeism and staff turnover ;

vi poor morale and erosion of worker loyalty and commitment;

vii increased costs associated with;

a) counseling , employees assistance , mediation , recruitment and training of


new workers; and

b) legal costs and workers’ compensation claims .
