Pre-assessment:
The teacher will begin by asking the students if they know what a compound word is, if
they know what a root word is. The teacher can also ask the students how can the
students use the two smaller words in a compound word to help figure out its
compound words the teacher will review with the students the basics about compound
Formative assessment:
The formative assessment will include a lot of activities for the students to participate
in. The teacher will make different index cards for the students that have different root
words on them. If the students can’t read the word, there will also be pictures on them
so they can try and decode the word with the picture. The index cards will be handed
out to each student and they will have a few minutes to find someone with another root
word and see if the word makes sense. The teacher will then have the students sit on
the carpet with their partner and they will show the picture and say what they think the
compound word is. The class and the teacher will practice saying the word and looking
at the two individual words and see what makes them a compound word. The teacher
will then add the word to a chart that the students can refer too as they keep going
about the lesson. The teacher can also monitor how the students are doing when they
are trying to put the words together and when they are gathered together and see if the
students have an understanding when talking about the word and practicing. The
teacher will give out worksheets that have compound words and pictures to see if they
can match the picture up with the compound word by drawing lines. The students will
hand in their work for the teacher too grade and see who is struggling on the concepts.
The teacher will hand out at least one worksheet a day for the 5 lessons the teacher
has planned, or maybe more. Worksheets will include, cut compound words and glue
them in the blanks to make a full compound word, color specific words that make a
compound word, and work with a partner to create a full sentence using a compound
word. Handing them out will help show the teacher and get a grasp on which students
need more help with it and which students are understanding it. Homework can also be
assigned to the students and handed in the next day, the teacher can assess from the
students work on how well the students are understanding the material.
Assessment as learning:
The teacher will assess their progress throughout the lesson, asking if they remember
what a compound word is and reviewing the previous concepts they have learned
about like root words and how to combine them. Teacher can ask questions to the
students and challenge their answers to see if they know what creates a compound
word.
Summative Assessment:
The teacher will have the student create a group project together, the students will
have to create their own compound words by using magazines that the teacher will
provide. They will cut out pictures and glue them onto construction paper and then the
students will write the two root words that create the compound word underneath the
compound word they have created. The teacher will hang multiple posters of the
