Grade Level 1

Learning Objective

Matter
1.3 The student will investigate and understand how
different common materials interact with water.
Key concepts include
a) some liquids will separate when mixed with
water, but others will not;
b) some solids will dissolve in water, but others will
not; and
c) some substances will dissolve more readily in
Content

hot water than in cold water.

Activity
This lesson’s purpose is to present the concept of matter to
students. Since this is a new lesson, the teacher will give the
students a brief synopsis of the lesson regarding what is matter
and the different types of matter (solid, liquid, gas) that will be
discussed. The students will work in groups of two, and will
collaborate with each other for a few seconds, while the teacher
interacts with the lesson on the SMART board. The students can
interact with the board by using the different colored writing
tools and/or their fingers. The first slide will ask students to
identify what matter is. The teacher will randomly choose a
volunteer group to approach the SMART board to write with the
writing tool what they think matter is. The students will write
what they think matter is and draw a picture as well. The class
will discuss with the teacher also what the potential answers
are. The next slide gives the answer, and students will learn and
see pictures of the different types of matter. The next slide
identifies what a solid is, and another volunteer duo of students
will approach the SMART board to erase the blank section of the
slide to see some examples of a solid. The class will discuss
which solids will dissolve in water and the solids that will not.
Pedagogy

These solids can be drawn on the SMART board by the students.

Another duo of students will approach the SMART board as the
class discusses what a liquid is. The students will use the writing
tool to click on the examples labeled 1,2,3 and 4, to view an
example of a liquid. The class will discuss what liquids can be
mixed with water that might separate, and what substances
dissolve easily in hot water versus cold water. The students will
write and draw what they think these substances are. The
teacher proceeds to the next slide explaining what a gas is and
asks students to think of a gas. The teacher chooses another duo
of students to approach the SMART board to write their
answers. As the teacher advances to the next slide, another
group is picked to sort the keywords on the SMART board and
uses the writing tool to move and match the word with the
description. The last two slides give the answers to the activity,
and the teacher and the students compare and reflect on the
answers given.
