Ideas have a life of their own and that life, too, is revolutionary.
Once fixed in men's minds, set down in writing on papyrus, they
continue to work ... Jesus confronted the Scribes and the Pharisees
with the words of the Law and the prophets, Heretics of all
descriptions... have used the dynamic text of the Gospels against
the rigid establishment of the Church... Protesters of all kinds oppose
their governments with the declaration of the Rights of Man. Lenin
waved the ardent, revolutionary prose of Marx in the faces of the
pundits of social democracy. The opponents of Stalinist oppression
recalled the declarations of Lenin. And so history is made-by a
torrent of live, boiling forces. So it was with Islam... The historian
cannot extricate himself by assuming some kind of primitive
determinism or an elementary form of Marxism : If Muhammad had
never been born, things would certainly have been very different..
A different throw of the dice and chance takes another turning.

Man is "an instinctively rational being who is moral
because he is rational. Morality is an appeal to conscience,
and conscience is the instinctive awareness of, and reaction
to, environments. It is a machanistic biological function on
the level of consciousness. Therefore, it is rational.

Religion is the self-consciousness and self esteem of man
who has either not yet found himself, or has already lost
himself again. But man is no abstract being encamped outside
the world. Man is the world of man, the state, society... Religion
is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless
world, just as it is the spirit of spiritless conditions. It is the
opium of the people. To abolish religion as the illusory
happiness of the people is to demand for their real happiness..
The criticism of religion is therefore in embryo the criticism of
the vale of tears, the halo of which is religion. Religion is only
the illusory sun which revolves round man as long as he does
not revolve around himself. (Introduction to Contribution to
the Critique of Hegel's Philosophy of Law, (M.E.C.W. Vol. 3,
PP 175-6).

"A man's ethical behaviour should be based effectually
on sympathy, education, and social ties and needs; no
religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor
way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and
hope of reward after death."
"I consider ethics to be an exclusively human concern
with no super-human authority behind it."
