Informative Speech Instructions

Purpose of Assignment:
The primary purpose of informative speaking is to ensure the audience's clear understanding of
the ideas or issues you share with them. The purpose of this speech is to present a clear
explanation of complex material to the audience. In other words, your task is to explain
something that requires a human to explain it. Your topic should be socially/culturally
significant, intellectually challenging, informative and interesting to your audience; you should
make it clear to your audience that they must listen, that they (their families, their communities)
will be better for learning the complexities of your topic. You are informing to educate.

 Your topic should be socially/culturally significant, informative and challenging to this


audience.
 The speech should be five to seven minutes in length.
 The introduction and conclusion should be fully developed—that is, they should include the
three clearly identifiable parts.
 Be prepared to answer questions from the audience after the conclusion of your speech.
 Your presentation skills should include:
 Natural and conversational delivery using notecards (i.e., you may not read from your
notecards)
 Effective vocal and physical delivery skills
 Effective use of visual aids

Speech Organization:
 There should be a definite, logical connective bridging each component of the speech.
 Each main point should be clearly stated and developed.
 Adhere to the principles of clear explanation. Use organizers (signposts, acronyms, slogans),
emphasis cues, analogies, and repetition.
Speech Development:
 Use at least three different types of supporting materials (i.e., examples, testimony, facts &
statistics, narratives, definition).
 Cite at least four sources in your speech.

Outline:
 A typed, full-sentence outline following the Outline Worksheet format (from the text or
previous speech assignments) is required.
 A reference page in APA format with at least four different source citations.

On the day of the speech bring the following:


 Your typed, full-sentence outline (rough draft and final draft); your note cards; peer feedback
forms; any visual aids; and your instructor agreed upon recording device.

Assignment addresses Course Learning Objectives 1-4.
