César Ducruet, geographer, is the Research Director at the French National Cen-
tre for Scientific Research (CNRS) & UMR 8504 Géographie-cités laboratory,
Paris, France. His work focuses on transport geography and network science
with applications in Europe and Asia. Working as an expert for various organi-
zations (OECD, World Bank, Korea Maritime Institute, JETRO), he is currently
the Principal Investigator of the Word Seastems research project funded by the
European Research Council (2013–2019).
Pablo Achurra-Gonzalez is a PhD researcher at the Port Operations Research and
Technology Centre (PORTeC) within the Centre for Transport Studies, Imperial
College London. His research focuses on the development of mathematical
models for container cargo routing and resilience assessment of maritime ship-
ping networks.
Alfredo Alessandrini is a Researcher at the Joint Research Centre (JRC – Ispra),
where he has been since 2012. He is currently working as a Geographical Data
Scientist in the Demography, Migration and Governance Unit, a European
Commission Centre of expertise created to support EU policies related to
migration and demography. Between 2012 and 2015, he was a postdoctoral
researcher at the JRC Maritime Unit to support the implementation and moni-
toring of EU Maritime policies mainly through the application of data mining,
statistics, and geospatial analysis techniques. Between 2011 and 2012, he was
a postdoctoral researcher at the EMMAH INRA Unit (Avignon, France), where
he was using remote-sensing techniques and field experimental surveys to
model the functioning of the Mediterranean forest ecosystem. He holds a degree
in forestry and environmental management from the University of Tuscia
(2005) and received a PhD in forestry management in 2008.
Panagiotis Angeloudis is a Senior Lecturer in Transport Systems and Logistics in
the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Imperial College
London. His research spans the areas of network optimisation, resilience, logis-
tics, and maritime transport.
Pascal Arnaud is a Professor of Roman History at Lyon II University, with a
specialization in philology, geography, and archaeology, following successive

studies at the Ecole Normale Supérieure, Ecole Française de Rome, Sorbonne
University; fellowships at the Institut Universitaire de France, Cincinnati
(Tytus), and Berlin (Topoï); and professional experiences at Bordeaux and
Nice universities. His research interests include the Roman and Parthian Near
East, ancient geographical knowledge, mapping and sea-based descriptions
(periploi), ancient seafaring, travel, and trade, and he has published ten books
and 150 articles.
Jean-François Arvis is a Senior Transport Economist with the World Bank Group
Trade and Competitiveness Global Practice, where he is in charge of the knowl-
edge activities in the area of trade logistics. Prior to joining the Bank, he worked
in various positions with the French Ministry of Economy and Industry (regula-
tion, trade, finance and development aid). He is a graduate of the École Normale
Supérieure in Paris and École Nationale Supérieure des Mines, and holds doc-
torate degrees in physics.
Françoise Bahoken, Geographer and Cartographer, is a Research Fellow (UMR
8504 Géographie-cités and IFSTTAR – AME – SPLOTT, Paris). Her research
topic is the quantitative analysis of spatial mobilities by means of cartographic
representations of origin/destination flow matrices.
David Barriopedro is a Senior Scientist at the Instituto de Geociencias (CSIC-
UCM) in Madrid. He is interested in analyzing extremes from different perspec-
tives, including their long-term variability and the forcing induced by the
stratosphere-troposphere coupling. Currently, he is co-IP of the PALEOSTRAT
project ((PALEOmodelization from a STRATospheric prespective).
Mia Bennett is a PhD candidate and National Science Foundation Graduate
Research Fellow in the Department of Geography at UCLA. Her research
examines critical and material practices of Arctic infrastructure and natural
resource development by integrating fieldwork and remotely sensed data. Ben-
nett received an MPhil in Polar Studies from the University of Cambridge,
where she was a Gates Scholar.
Leah Beveridge is a Doctoral Student in the Interdisciplinary PhD Program at
Dalhousie University, studying multi-stakeholder and cross-cultural gover-
nance for Arctic marine spaces in Canada, with a particular interest in marine
navigation and vessel management and finding collaborative processes that
support the environment and way of life in the North. She has a BSc in Biology
and Aquatic Resources from St. Francis Xavier University, and a Master’s in
Marine Management from Dalhousie University.
Charles Bouveyron is a Professor of Statistics and head of the Department of
Statistics at Université Paris Descartes, Paris, France. He received, in 2006, a
PhD degree from Université Grenoble 1 (France) for his work on high-
dimensional classification. From 2006–2007, he was a postdoctoral researcher
in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics of Acadia University in Can-
ada, where he worked on a statistical analysis of networks. Then, he was

Assistant Professor (2007–2012) and Associate Professor (2012–2013) at Uni-
versité Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. His research interests include the classifica-
tion of high-dimensional data, classification under uncertainty and weak
supervision, adaptive and online learning, as well as network analysis. He has
become a recognized expert in model-based classification (EM algorithm, latent
variable, etc.) and analysis of high-dimensional data (latent subspaces, variable
selection, intrinsic dimension estimation, etc.). In this context, he has developed
several innovative clustering and classification methods and applied them with
success in medical imaging, mass spectrometry, and chemometrics.
David Brosset is an Assistant Professor of computer science at the Naval Academy
Research Institute in France. He holds a PhD degree in computer science from
Arts et Métiers. His research is composed of two main topics. The first one deals
with real problems containing spatial and temporal data. The second topic relies
on cyber security, particularly of naval systems.
Mattia Bunel is a PhD student (IGN COGIT). He integrated the ERC World Sea-
stems project as an Engineer in Humanities and Social Sciences in 2016. He is
the lead developer of GeoSeastems, a website for interactive visualization of
Lloyd’s data.
Daniel Castillo is a postdoc researcher at the University of Las Palmas de Gran
Canaria, Spain. He has published widely on West African seaport development,
especially on patterns of long-term evolution of regional port systems and port
communities and how seaborne trade influenced the economic development
process in Africa.
Marcelo do Vale Cunha is a Professor at the IFBA (Federal Institute of Education,
Science and Technology of Bahia). His research interests include complex sys-
tems, instrumentation in physics, social and complex networks, semantic net-
works, and time-variable graphs.
Sylvain Cuyala, Postdoctoral Research Fellow (CNRS, UMR 8504 Géographie-
cités), received his PhD degree in Geography in 2014 from University of
Paris 1. In the World Seastems project, he was in charge of data processing and
analysis of interdependencies between urban development and the maritime
network.
Ali El Hosni obtained his master’s degree (2015) at Paris 4 Sorbonne University
on port-city relationships. He was a team member of the ERC World Seastems
project and is currently preparing a PhD project about city logistics.
Laurent Etienne is an Assistant Professor at University Francois Rabelais, Tours,
France. He holds a PhD in Geomatics from the University of Brest (France) and
an MSc in Computer Science from the University of Rennes (France). His main
research interests include spatial data mining and knowledge discovery from
moving objects databases, spatio-temporal patterns of mobile objects, outlier
detection, and maritime geographic information systems (GIS).

Tim Evans is a Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London, where he is part of the
Theoretical Physics research group but also a member of the cross-disciplinary
Centre for Complexity Science and the Social and Cultural Analytics Lab.
Virginia Fernandez Arguedas received BS and MS degrees in Telecommuni-
cation Engineering from Universidad Autonoma de Madrid in 2008 and a
Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering from Queen Mary University of London
(QMUL) in 2012. From 2008 to 2013, she was a Researcher with QMUL, work-
ing on image processing techniques for surveillance applications. From 2013
to 2016, she was a Scientific/Technical Project Officer with the European Com-
mission, Joint Research Centre, where she was involved in maritime awareness
through the analysis of satellite imagery and self-reporting positioning data.
She is currently a Senior Image Processing Engineer with the Deimos-Elecnor
Group. Her current research is focused on image processing, machine learning,
and data mining for security applications. Furthermore, she has participated in
several European projects and collaborations with the private sector related
with multimedia data analysis and representation.
Claudio Ferrari is a Full Professor of Applied Economics at the University of
Genoa, Italy. His scientific research is focused on transport economics, trans-
port planning, and regional economics, namely with regard to ports and trans-
port infrastructures. He is the author of several contributions published in
academic journals and books.
Mélanie Fournier holds a PhD in Geography from Montpellier III University. Her
research mainly focused on maritime surveillance and illegal trafficking. She
is currently an Associate with NEXUS Coastal Resource Management Ltd., a
Canada-based company.
María Jesús Freire-Seoane is an Economist at the Institute of Maritime Studies
(University of A Coruña, Galicia, Spain), with a PhD in Economic Sciences.
She works currently as a Professor of Applied Economics in the University of
A Coruña. She has a wide path in maritime transportation research, with rele-
vant contributions to the analysis of a port’s foreland and hinterland. Since
2010, she has also been the co-director of the Spanish Government’s MSc pro-
gramme on Port Management and Multimodal Logistics.
David Gallego is an Associate Professor of Atmospheric Physics at the Universi-
dad Pablo de Olavide in Seville (Spain). His research background focuses on
understanding climate variability at different time scales. Currently, he is the PI
of the project INCITE (‘INstrumental Climatic Indexes. Application to the
study of the monsoon-Mediterranean Teleconnection’).
Ricardo García-Herrera is a Full Professor of Atmospheric Physics at the Uni-
versidad Complutense de Madrid and the Instituto de Geociencias (CSIC-UCM).
His current research interests vary from the analysis of weather and climate
research, to the use of documentary sources to characterize climate variability
in the las 500 years. He is the author of more than 140 research papers.

Fernando I. González-Laxe is an Economist at the Institute of Maritime Studies (Uni-
versity of A Coruña, Galicia, Spain), PhD in Economic Sciences, and a professor and
researcher of Applied Economics. He has been designated for many governance
positions and institutions (president of the regional government, Spanish fisheries
policies representative in the European Union, and director of Spanish Ports State
Entity, among others). He’s performed and published many studies related with port
efficiency, port sustainability, and foreland-hinterland interactions.
Daniel J. Graham is a Professor of Statistical Modelling in the Department of Civil &
Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London. His research includes
work on various aspects of transport modelling and spatial statistical analysis.
Kateryna Grushevska is a Marine Insurance Broker at Proteus Risk Solutions
based in Antwerp (Belgium), where she provides insurance and risk manage-
ment services to ship owners and managers, port and terminal operators, mul-
timodal operators, and other parties involved in shipping activities.
Dr Grushevska acquired her doctoral degree at the University of Antwerp in
2016. She holds an MSc in Transport and Maritime Economics from ITMMA,
as well as an MBA from Antwerp Management School. Her academic interests
particularly focus on ports and logistics in the Black Sea region.
Carlos Guedes Soares is a Professor of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineer-
ing and is heading CENTEC, the Centre for Marine Technology and Ocean
Engineering, of Instituto Superior Tecnico, University of Lisbon, which is rec-
ognized and funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology.
He received his MS degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology,
USA, in 1976; a PhD from the Norwegian Institute of Science and Technology,
University of Trondheim, Norway, in 1984; and a Doctor of Science degree
from the Technical University of Lisbon, Lisbon, Portugal, in 1991.
David Guerrero is a Researcher on the freight transportation team (Ame-Splott) of
the French Institute of Science and Technology for Transport, Development and
Networks (Ifsttar). He received a PhD in economic geography in 2010 at the
University Paris 7. His field of interest is the geography of freight transport,
especially topics pertaining to ports, maritime transport, and global supply chains.
Jan Hoffmann is Chief of UNCTAD’s Trade Logistics Branch and responsible for
UNCTAD’s research, teaching, and technical assistance programmes in interna-
tional transport and trade facilitation. Publications of the branch include the
“Review of Maritime Transport”, “Maritime Country Profiles”, and the “Liner
Shipping Connectivity Index”. Previously, he worked for ECLAC (1997–2003),
IMO (1995–1996) and a family shipping company. He is president of the Interna-
tional Association of Maritime Economists; he has studied in Germany, the UK,
and Spain and holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Hamburg.
Yan Hong obtained her MSc from the School of Urban & Regional Science, East
China Normal University, China. She was a visiting student at the French
National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), Paris, France.

Hidekazu Itoh is a Professor of Marketing with the School of Business Adminis-
tration and an Adjunct Professor of Technology Management, Institute of Busi-
ness and Accounting (IBA), Professional Graduate School, Kwansei Gakuin
University, Japan.
Atiya Habeeb Kidwai is a Geographer and Regional Planner. She has served as a
Professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University and at the School of Planning and Archi-
tecture, New Delhi. Her research interests are urban history and maritime studies.
Carl Knappett teaches in the Department of the History of Art at the University
of Toronto, where he holds the Walter Graham/Homer Thompson Chair in
Aegean Prehistory. He works on the societies of the Bronze Age Aegean, focus-
ing in particular on questions of urbanism, artistic expression, and interaction,
for which he employs network concepts. Recent publications include Human
Mobility and Technological Transfer in the Prehistoric Mediterranean, coed-
ited with Evangelia Kiriatzi, and the edited volume Network Analysis in Archae-
ology: New Approaches to Regional Interaction.
Claire Lagesse has been an Associate Professor (UMR 6049 ThéMa, CNRS /
University of Burgundy – Franche-Comté) since 2016, after a post-doctoral
fellowship in the World Seastems project. She holds a PhD degree in Physics
(University Paris-Diderot, Sorbonne Paris-Cité), and an Engineering degree in
Geomatics (from ENSG, French National Higher School of Geomatics). Her
research work deals with the analysis of complex networks embedded in space,
providing methodologies to characterize spatial graphs, with applications to
road and maritime networks.
Pierre Latouche is an Associate Professor in Applied Mathematics, SAMM Labo-
ratory, Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, France.
Damien Le Guyader is a Coastal and Marine Geographer specializing in spatial
data analysis and computing. Based at Terra Maris, his research interests include
human activities interaction, human impact mapping, and movement analysis
in the context of Marine Spatial Planning.
Sung-Woo Lee is the Director General at Port & Logistics Div., Korea Maritime
Institute. His research fields are multi-logistics in Northeast Asia and Arctic
shipping.
Yushan Lin is a Postgraduate Student at the School of Urban & Regional Science,
East China Normal University, China, and she is interested in port geography.
Bruno Marnot is a Professor in Modern History at the University of La Rochelle, a
member of the Center for Research in International and Atlantic History, and an assis-
tant director of the Interest Scientific Group in Maritime History and Sciences.
Javier Mellado is a PhD student at the Instituto Dom Luiz, Universidade de
Lisboa. His research is focused on the use of logbooks to characterize climate
variability in the last centuries in the Euro Atlantic area.

Eric Mermet is a CNRS Research Engineer appointed to Social Mathematic
Analysis Centres and the Institute of Complex Systems. He works at the EHESS
GIS Platform, where he has been developing organization components. He also
manages several projects in interaction with 60 researchers, as well as technical
components by implementing different tools (software, plugins, WebGIS, web-
sites). He was trained as a science engineer and focused his interest on robotics
and intelligent systems. He earned a PhD in computer science and geomatics
for the structural analysis of transport networks.
Amin Mobasheri is a research scientist in the field of GIScience. He received his
BSc in computer software engineering and MSc in geo-informatics. Currently
he is a doctoral candidate at GIScience research group of Heidelberg University.
His research interests include GIS and spatial planning, geospatial data quality
and analysis, and open geospatial data and services.
Ali Niknejad is a Research Associate in the Department of Civil & Environmental
Engineering at Imperial College London. His research involves maritime trans-
port, network optimisation, risk management, and relevant decision support
tools.
Theo Notteboom is a Professor in Port and Maritime Economics and
Management. His work is widely cited. He is a Chair Professor at Ghent
University in Belgium and a Research Professor at the China Institute of FTZ
Supply Chain of Shanghai Maritime University. He also is a part-time Profes-
sor at the University of Antwerp and the Antwerp Maritime Academy in Bel-
gium. He is co-director of www.porteconomics.eu, a knowledge dissemination
platform on port studies. He is an immediate Past President (2010–2014) and
Council Member of International Association of Maritime Economists
(IAME).
Carlos Pais Montes is a Mathematician at the Institute of Maritime Studies
(University of A Coruña, Galicia, Spain), with a PhD in maritime transport,
and is working currently as a database programmer and researcher in the men-
tioned university. He received an MSc in Port Management, and since 2010,
he’s developed multidisciplinary approaches in different fields of applied
economics.
Ronald Pelot is a Professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering at Dal-
housie University. In 1997, he founded the Maritime Activity and Risk Inves-
tigation Network (MARIN) at Dalhousie. Since then, his team has developed
new software tools and analysis methods applied to maritime safety (accidents),
marine spills risks, and emergency response planning.
Hernane Borges de Barros Pereira is currently a Professor at the State Univer-
sity of Bahia and at the University Center SENAI ClMATEC. Professor
Pereira’s main interests in the fields of science, information technology, and
innovation lie in the areas of network theory through computer modeling
techniques.

Séléna Petit, Geomatic Engineer, holds a Master’s degree in Cartography (Uni-
versity of Paris 1). She worked on the development of an online platform for
the visualization and analysis of maritime networks.
Cyril Ray is an Associate Professor in Computer Sciences, MOTIM Group, Ecole
Navale, Brest, France.
Ray Rivers is an Emeritus Professor and Distinguished Research Fellow in Theo-
retical Physics and a member of the Centre for Complexity Science at Imperial
College London. His interests include non-equilibrium behaviour of quantum
systems and of social networks, particularly proto-historic maritime networks
and city-state formation.
Stanislas Roussin is the Director of SERIC in South Korea, graduated with a
degree in geo-economy, and is a Senior Researcher at ASEM Institute for Inter-
national Relations, Seoul, South Korea.
Carlos César Ribeiro Santos is an Assistant Professor and coordinator of
graduate and postgraduate courses at the University Center SENAI
CIMATEC. His research interests include complex systems, social and com-
plex networks, logistics, maritime networks, time-variable graphs, and pro-
duction management.
Tiago A. Santos graduated with a degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engi-
neering in 1995 from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon,
Portugal, and obtained a PhD degree in 2007 at IST. Currently, he is an assistant
professor at IST and a researcher at the Centre for Marine Technology and
Ocean Engineering (CENTEC) in the field of Maritime Transportation, Ports,
and Logistics.
Guoqiang Shen is a Full Professor of Regional and City Planning at the University
of Oklahoma, USA. He is interested in urban, regional, and global freight trans-
portation models and logistics management.
Brian Slack is Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Concordia University, Mon-
treal. He holds degrees from the London School of Economics and McGill
University, as well as an honorary doctorate from the University of Le Havre.
In a career spanning more than 40 years his research has focused on ports, ship-
ping and intermodal transport. In recent years his work has dealt with a range
of issues related to scale, from small ports, family firms in container shipping,
mega ships, and the need to consider individual terminals rather than the port
as a whole. He continues to be engaged in extensive consultancies.
Mark Stoddard is a PhD student in the Department of Industrial Engineering at
Dalhousie University. As a member of the Maritime Activity and Risk Investi-
gation Network (MARIN) at Dalhousie, his research has focused on the devel-
opment of new computational methods and analytical processes to support
Arctic maritime risk assessment.

Alessio Tei is a Lecturer in Maritime Economics at Newcastle University, United
Kingdom. His scientific research is focused on port economics, shipping regula-
tion, transport planning, and regional development. He is the author of several
contributions published in academic journals and books and a member of the
editorial board of the International Journal of Transport Economics.
Kenmei Tsubota is a Research Fellow at the Institute of Developing Economies,
JETRO. His main research field is regional integration. His works have appeared
in Economic Modelling, the Journal of Economic Geography, and others.
Michele Vespe is a Scientific Officer at the European Commission – Joint Research
Centre (JRC), where he coordinates the activities of a research team in the fields
of data analytics, big data, and knowledge discovery. Between 2011 and 2013,
he was a Senior Scientist with the NATO Centre for Maritime Research and
Experimentation, where he was involved in maritime data mining and anomaly
detection. Prior to this, he was a Senior Engineer in the private sector and a
Postdoctoral Researcher at the JRC. He holds a degree in telecommunications
engineering from the University of Florence (2003) and a PhD in signal pro-
cessing from University College London (2006).
Lie-Hui Wang is an Associate Professor at the School of Urban and Regional
Science and a fellow at the Center for Modern Chinese City Studies of East
China Normal University in Shanghai, China. He got a PhD degree in historical
geography from Fudan University in 2008 and after that did a two-year post-
doctoral research study about urban geography at East China Normal Univer-
sity. From September 2013 to 2014, he was a visiting scholar at ITMMA,
University of Antwerp. He published a book (Forming the New Hub: Geo-
graphical Study on the Relationship between Shanghai and Ningbo Ports,
1843–1941) and more than 20 papers. Now he is taking charge of a project
about the maritime network of East Asian container ports from 1996 to 2016
supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC).
Haoxiang Xia is a Professor of Management Science and Engineering in the Fac-
ulty of Management and Economics at Dalian University of Technology, China.
In recent years, he has focused on the structure and dynamics of complex sys-
tems, including complex networks of road transportation and maritime
shipping.
Mengqiao Xu is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow on the Faculty of Management
and Economics at Dalian University of Technology, China. Her work focuses
specifically on the structure of maritime transport and its impact on interna-
tional trade and the wider economy.
Konstantinos Zavitsas is a Research Associate in Operations Research and Trans-
port in the Centre for Transport Studies of Imperial College London. His
research interests lie in efficient transport systems operations, management, and
maintenance.

Foreword
How many maps of worldwide maritime flows have been printed during the last
century based on actual shipping data? The response is extraordinarily ridiculous:
less than a dozen. This is particularly surprising, given that in the past and still
nowadays, about 90% of global trade volumes travel via maritime transport, so
being aware of the precise nature, volume, and distribution of shipping flows in
the past, present, and future should be crucial for both researchers and practitio-
ners. Like many other research fields, the digital revolution of the late 1990s and
early 2000s had the effect of exponentially increasing our knowledge on all sorts
of shipping flows, from the real-time position of individual ships to the macro-
scopic pattern of global maritime routes (Ducruet, 2016; Hoffmann et al., 2017).
Yet, maritime research is characterized by a number of weaknesses that the cur-
rent book wishes to address. First, it remains a much fragmented area due to its
strong disciplinary focus and limited dialogue among the different perspectives.
There is an urgent need to explore and reveal existing and potential bridges
between dispersed works on shipping, the backbone of the world economy (Lau
et al., 2017). Second, shipping itself still occupies a relatively peripheral place in
mainstream research, as it is often seen (and also advertised) as a technical, spe-
cialized subdiscipline of either history, economics, geography, management, or
engineering (Ng et al., 2014). Links with wider themes and issues are underex-
plored to such an extent that huge efforts are needed to enhance the recognition of
shipping in the academic and professional sphere. Third, and related with the
former, the richness, diversity, and explanatory power of shipping data are
underestimated – if not unknown – to a large audience, as well as the concepts,
tools, and methods dedicated to analyze such information.
This volume proposes to tackle these three lacunae head on. The methodological
entry based on shipping data is the common ground of all contributions, while
those also question the nature of shipping itself as an industry but also as a vector
and imprint of economic, cultural, and political interactions. How are shipping
flows distributed and evolving across space and time? What do they tell us about

the maritime and port sector and about the rest of the economy and society? This
chapter aims to provide a comprehensive review of shipping data analyses and
introduce the book’s contents. The next section is a tentative categorization of
existing works distinguishing amongst two sets of approaches, where shipping-
specific issues are central or peripheral, depending on the research angle. Finally,
we present the perspectives and structure of the book.
