LING/PSY201 – Introduction to Linguistics (Spring 2018; 50 students + grader)
Taught the introductory course for linguistics as sole instructor. Created the syllabus, teaching
materials and homework assignments, administered tests and held office hours. Taught
phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics.

LING314 – Phonetics (Fall 2017; 25 students)


Taught phonetics as the sole instructor. Created the syllabus, exams, homework assignments,
and other materials for in-class demonstrations. Graded all assignments and assisted students
whenever they needed help.

SBS200 – Introduction to Statistics for the Social Sciences (Fall 2018 – Spring 2020, 3x 30 students)
Teaching several in-person sections for an introductory class to statistics. Creating exam

LING150A – Language (Spring 2017; 25 students)


Taught an in-person section for the general education class Language. Taught phonetics,
morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and animal language to freshmen from various fields.
Graded all assignments and papers as well as the final project of constructing a language.

Taught an accompanying class to the main lecture; created teaching materials in form of
worksheets, PowerPoints, and supplemental materials; assisted students with transcription
practices, taught the IPA and the fundamental basics in articulatory phonetics and phonology,

Effective Pronunciation (WS11/12)


Supervised students in their tasks: recorded themselves and find their pronunciation mistakes
in English; used IPA to transcribe these mistakes and offered assistance to detect
mispronunciations and other mistakes; corrected their pronunciation for their final and graded
task.

The Certificate is a 10-unit graduate program focusing on learner-centered theories as well as
instructional strategies. It provides foundational information, assisting in developing and honing
one’s competencies to become an effective collegiate professor. The Certificate includes both
theoretical background and practical application when observed while teaching. Topics include
writing a student-centered syllabus, rubrics and creating rubrics, applying learner-center
strategies, reflection, and many possibilities to observe and being observed (even video-taped).

Member: Faculty Learning Communities (Fall 2019 - present)


In biweekly meetings, faculty comes together to discuss various topics related to teaching, e.g.
how to begin the semester, how to learn names, how to create active lectures, how to implement
learner-centered activities. Faculty share past experiences, discusses readings, and potential
benefits and shortfalls of certain teaching strategies.

Bootcamp: Online Course Development (Spring 2019)


The Bootcamp is a month-long online course in which Graduate Teaching Assistants learn how
develop an effective, learner-centered online class based of a syllabus for one of their classes;
this includes designing engaging activities, developing content, and using technology.

Workshop: Teaching Distracted Minds (Fall 2019)


Workshop by James Lang about the background and theories about attention as well as
suggestions on how to drive curiosity, create patterns and structure, and include ways to restore
attention for both in-person and online classes.

Workshop: VoiceThread Basics (Spring 2020)


A synchronous online workshop that taught participants, step-by-step with hands-on activities,
how to upload media, comment, annotate, and share that media.

A two-week online mini-course teaching about methods, tools, and best practices for hybrid and

Profilehre is a further training program at Bavarian universities to foster good collegiate
teaching. Participation in two two-day courses about humor in teaching and good presentations
and presentation skills. Learned theoretical background about humor; how to include humor in
teaching; roles plays; learned how different types of presentations are structured, prepared, and
held; several video-taped practice sessions including feedback.
