CEE 220 Homework Assignment No.

9 Spring 2017
Due: May 29th

Problem Set
For all problems, write a problem statement, provide sketches, and comment on your thought process.
Draw free body diagrams as applicable.

1. Simply Supported Beam Deflection

Consider the simply supported beam subjected to a point load, P , as shown in the figure. If the beam
has a constant EI:

2L/3 L/3

(a) Determine the shear, V (x), for the beam as a function of x.

(b) Determine the moment, M (x), for the beam as a function of x.
(c) Determine the curvature, v 00 (x), for the beam as a function of x.
(d) Determine the slope, v 0 (x), for the beam as a function of x.
(e) Determine the deflection, v(x), for the beam as a function of x.

2. Cantilever Beam Deflection

Consider the cantilevered beam supporting a balcony. It is subjected to an effective distributed load
of 5 kip/ft. If the beam is a W 14 × 30 steel beam (properties available via web search) with elastic
modulus E = 29, 000 ksi:

6 ft

(a) Determine the elastic curve, v(x), for the beam as a function of x.
(b) Determine the maximum slope.
(c) Determine the maximum deflection.

3. Concrete Canoes

The American Society of Civil Engineers hosts an annual engineering competition where student en-
gineers try to design, construct, and race the best concrete canoe. The competition requires teams
to include sample structural calculations in their design paper. As a means to transfer knowledge to
the next year’s team, the UW Concrete Canoe’s Structural Leads have chosen you to carry out this
important task! Fortunately, as ghastly as the analysis spreadsheet seems, it can all be summarized by
what you have learned this week! Shown below, the controlling load case of two male paddlers can be
simplified into two point loads while the buoyant load of the water can be simplified into a triangular
load. Assume the canoe has a rectangular cross-section in the middle (A-A) as shown below. Assume
that under the point loads (B-B) the canoe is 14 in wide instead of 28 in wide.

(a) Draw the shear and moment diagrams for the canoe.
(b) What moment and shear would you want to check the canoe for? Where do they occur?
(c) Determine the location of your centroid from the top and bottom of the cross-section at middle of
the canoe and where the paddlers sit.
(d) Determine the moment of inertia, I, for the middle of the canoe and where the paddlers sit.
(e) Draw and label a bending stress diagram for the middle of the canoe.
(f) If the concrete’s tension capacity, σt , is 105 psi and the compression capacity, σ0c , is 750 psi, will
the canoe be okay? If it will, by how much is it okay (i.e. what is the factor of safety?)? If it
won’t, what would you suggest?
(g) Determine the maximum shear stress, τmax , acting on the canoe due to the maximum shear force.
(h) If the concrete’s shear capacity, τcap is equal to 30 psi, will the canoe be okay? If it will, by how
much is it okay (i.e. what is the factor of safety?)? If it won’t, what would you suggest?

4. Bending of Compound Beam

Consider the compound beam consists of two segments that are pinned together at B, loaded as shown
in figure below.

W

A B C
L L

(a) Draw the shear and moment diagrams for this beam and determine the maximum moment, Mmax
as a function of W .
(b) Determine the moment of inertia, I, for the given cross-section.
(c) If L = 10 f t, determine the largest intensity of the distributed load, W , in lb/in which the
beam can withstand such that the maximum bending stress does not exceed its allowable value of
σmax = 36 ksi.

5. Combined Loading in pressure vessel

A thin cylindrical pressure vessel is subjected to an internal pressure P and its self weight as shown
in the figure. The pressure vessel is made from steel which has yield stress fy =40 ksi. Determine if
the pressure vessel will fail based upon the maximum shear stress (Tresca) failure criterion. What is
the factor of safety against failure in the pressure vessel? (P =0.25 ksi, rOuter =4 ft, t=1 inch, w0 =300
kip/ft, L=25 ft, L0 =5 ft)
