PRE-REQUISITES:
Power Electronics and Power Systems at UG level
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
HVDC Transmission: Capabilities, Applications and planning; Analysis and control of
power converter; Harmonics and Filters; Types of Multi-Terminal DC Systems and
control; Faults and Protection.
COURSEOBJECTIVES:
CEO1. To impart advanced knowledge in HVDC Transmission.
CEO2. To analyze various HVDC Converters, Harmonics, filters and their characteristics
and design new control strategies for HVDC systems.
COURSE OUTCOMES: After successful completion of the course, student will be able to
CO1. demonstrate in-depth knowledge in HVDC transmission systems, types of DC
links and MTDC systems, analyze the basic HVDC transmission conversion
principles and its applications.
CO2. demonstrate in-depth knowledge in static power converters, analyze various
static converters operation in HVDC systems and designing skills in control of
converters.
CO3. demonstrate in-depth knowledge in harmonics and analyze the harmonic
distortions in HVDC systems and designing skills in filters for harmonic
eliminations.
CO4. demonstrate in-depth knowledge in different types of faults and analyze the
various protection schemes in HVDC systems.

DETAILED SYLLABUS:
UNIT I– INTRODUCTION TO HVDC TRANSMISSION (10 periods)
H.V.D.C Transmission– Comparison of HVAC and HVDC transmission, types of DC Links,
power handling capabilities of HVDC lines, applications of HVDC Transmission, planning
for HVDC transmission, modern trends in DC Transmission, basic conversion principles.
