Challenges of choosing a program at College

Going to college can be an exciting experience albeit stressful, the most important part of

this experience is the course that shapes someone’s future. Three main challenges of choosing a

program in college are financial situation, interest in courses, and planning for the future.

Firstly, it can be financially draining to choose a program in college. Some students

simply can’t afford the prices, while others will end up in debt trying to pay it. Students must

take into consideration that some programs can be extremely expensive. Money can possibly

become the main factor and cause a student to choose a cheaper course that they have no interest

doing. Without having adequate funds for college this can leave students feeling deprived of

money. Furthermore, considering if the students do not have enough money, college program

prices can put massive strain on the student’s family or guardian as well. However, resources

such as OSAP can help keep student financially in check going into a program they otherwise

would not be able to participate in.

Secondly, interest in the course that is chosen is vital. This can equate to having prior

knowledge in the course whether it was taken prior to college or from personal research.

Moreover, motivation towards the subject of the course is extremely important,

maintaining motivation throughout the program can be the driving factor towards a student’s

success and is a valuable trait to have. Also, a student must be able to make sacrifices by putting

aside hobbies to make time for the amount of course work they will be expecting throughout

their program. Without the sacrifices made and the dedication put forth a student can become

overwhelmed, stressed, and eventually fail.

Lastly, having a goal in mind after course completion is required for future experiences.
Students must ensure that the career path they have chosen is something that is desired for their

future. This is because the process of repeating college because of a lack of desire can become a

massive waste of time, money, and energy. Furthermore, another challenge arises when the

student needs to search for a job that matches the education they have been taught. Not every job

leads to one main career which is why seeking jobs which match best to students is essential.

Moreover, a student must incorporate financial security with their chosen job, being able to make

enough money and pay back any student loans or debts is crucial.

In conclusion some fundamental reasons as to why determining programs in higher

education is difficult are economic position, enthusiasm for material, and include ambitions after

curriculum fulfillment.
