Lesson Plan
Grade: Fourth Grade
Standards:
4.NF.B.4b Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction by
a whole number. Understand a multiple of a/b as a multiple of 1/b, and use this understanding to
multiply a fraction by a whole number.
4.NF.B.4c Solve word problems involving multiplication of a fraction by a whole number, e.g.,
by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem.
1. Anticipatory Set (focus):

o Students will be to solve mathematical problems which will require them to

multiply a fraction by a whole number.

2. Purpose (objective):

o Students will be able to –

 Multiply a whole number and a fraction to solve problems
 Share their thinking with their fellow classmates

3. Input:

o For students to master this lesson they will need to be able to understand the
correct steps which need to be taken in order to multiply a fraction by a whole
number. (ex: multiply the whole number by the numerator of the fraction and then
divide the product by the denominator of the fraction).

4. Modeling (show):

o To begin this lesson, the class will be seated at their desks. I will display a Math
Warm-Up problem (“Predict the answer to 2/3 x 3. Why do you think that’s the
answer?”) on the doc camera for the class to see. The students will work to solve
the problem on their individual white boards. Meanwhile, I will be walking to
each of the tables while the students are solving the problem and visually looking
at their answers. Students will hold up their boards when they are finished so that
I can clearly see their answers. I will select at least two different students’ boards
and display their answers under the doc camera. I will select students who clearly
show the steps as to how they arrived at their answers as well as students who
took unique ways to solving the problem. As a class we will review and discuss
the math problem.

5. Guided Practice:

o I will have students take out their math notebooks as we will begin out math notes
for this lesson (Topic 13 Lesson 3). I will write the math notes in my math
notebook which will be projected under the doc camera for the class to see. The
students will be following along as they write these notes in their own notebooks.
In these math notes, I will state for students what the objective is as well as solve
different math problems within the lesson.

6. Check Understanding:

o In order to check the students understanding, the students will complete a Re-
teaching page in their envision Math workbooks which help to reinforce the math
concepts learned in the lesson. During this time, I will be walking around the
student tables and checking for students' understanding. I’ll make note of the
student(s) having difficulty and I will pull these students for additional support.

7. Independent Practice:

o For the student’s independent practice, they will complete the 13-3 Re-teaching
page in their envision Math workbooks which help to reinforce the math concepts
learned in the lesson. During this time the students will be working on the
workbook page. After they have completed that task, students will raise their
hands and I will visually check their answers for accuracy, providing additional
assistance when needed. Meanwhile, after they have successfully completed the
workbook page they will begin to work on “Resource Boards” which is a
collection of varying math assignments by learning style and by ability all
centered around the current math topic. I will be walking to each of the tables
while the students are working to ensure they are remaining on task as well as
answering any questions.

8. Closure:

o Students will continue to work on their Resource Boards choice activity until the
end of our math time.

-Duration of the lesson:

30 minutes
- Materials used:
enVision Math Common Core Reteaching and Practice Workbook (Topic 13 Lesson 13-3
Multiplying a Fraction by a Whole Number: Using Symbols)
Pencils
White boards and dry-erase markers
- Prior assessments given before lesson is taught:
In the prior lesson’s students have been working with fractions. In the prior lesson, students used
models to develop an understanding of multiplying a fraction by a whole number.
-Follow-up activity after the lesson:
Students will complete the “Practice” 13-3 page in their enVision Math workbooks for
homework that night.
- Strategies used in the lesson:
Use of visual signals (I agree, or I respectfully disagree) to better help students convey their
understanding of the different concepts and math problems
-EL accommodations:
Preview the math Re-teaching before the lesson in order to introduce the key concepts and
vocabulary pertinent to the lesson and word problems.
-Any accommodations for disabilities (IEP’s)
Preview the lesson with the student before the lesson. The student goes to resource earlier in the
day to receive the same lesson in a small group setting.
-How technology could be used in this lesson
Technology is incorporated in this lesson through use of the doc camera. The math notes will be
projected onto the T.V. screen through the doc camera so the class can see. Resource board is a
hyperdoc for students to work from on their individual computers.
