The Wooden Bowl

A frail old man went to
live with his son, daughter-
in-law, and four-year
grandson.
The old man’s hands
trembled, his eyesight was
blurred, and his step faltered.
The family ate together at
the table. But the elderly
grandfather’s shaky hands
and failing sight made eating
difficult. Peas rolled off his
spoon onto the floor. When
he grasped the glass, milk
spilled on the tablecloth.
The son and daughter-
in-law became irritated with
the mess.
“We must do something
about Grandfather,” said the
son. “I’ve had enough of his
spilled milk, noisy eating
and food on the floor.”
So the husband and
wife set a small table in the

The Wooden Bowl continued from front
When the family glanced in Grandfather’s direction,
sometimes he had a tear in his eye as he sat alone.
Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp
admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food.
The four-year-old watched it all in silence. One
evening before supper, the father noticed his son
playing with wood scraps on the floor.
He asked the child sweetly, “What are you making?”
Just as sweetly, the boy responded, “Oh I am
making a wooden bowl for you and Mama to eat your
food from when I grow up.” The four-year-old smiled
and went back to work.
The words so struck the parents that they were
speechless. Then tears started to stream down their
cheeks. Though no word was spoken, both knew
what must be done. That evening the husband took
Grandfather’s hand and gently led him back to the
family table. For the remainder of his days he ate every
meal with the family. And for some reason, neither
husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a
fork was dropped, milk spilled, or the tablecloth soiled.
Children are remarkably perceptive. Their eyes
ever observe, their ears ever listen, and their minds
ever process the messages they absorb. If they see their
parents patiently provide a happy home atmosphere for
family members, they will imitate that attitude for the
rest of their lives. The wise parent realizes that every day
the building blocks are being laid for the child’s future.
Food Bank open Tuesday
The Valley County Community Food Bank will be
open for its regular monthly distribution on Tuesday,
April 21st at the Valley County Food Bank Building.
Distribution will occur from noon to 4:00 and
Food Bank volunteers are asking all recipients to remain
in their vehicles & no standing in line. Volunteers will
deliver all food to each vehicle on the distribution day.
If you have not received food from the Food Bank in
the past but are in need this month you are encouraged
to come to the distribution day and volunteers will make
sure you are taken care of. Pat Hallett of the Food Bank
says that community support has been overwhelming
with monetary and food donations and she would like
to thank all those who are donating to this important
cause.
She also noted that during the distribution on
April 21st that recipients are asked to not arrive before
noon and volunteers will be there as long as it takes to
distribute the food.

Starting January 2020, the Valley County Refuse
District #1 is limiting use of the container sites (blue
containers) to the dumping of household garbage
only. If a load contains any items other than daily
household garbage, the scale and landfill must be
used to dispose of those items. If a load weighs less
than 400 pounds, a flat rate of $5.00 per load will be
assessed. Anything in excess of that amount will be
charged based upon tonnage. If the cost of a load is
under $20.00, payment will be required to be made
at the scale. Individuals not using the scale when
required will be assessed fees according to the
following schedule adopted by the Refuse District:
• Pickup, Single Axel Trailer - $100.00 per load
• Tandem Axel Trailer, Single Axel Farm Truck -
$200.00 per load
• Tandem Axel Farm Truck, Triple Axel Trailer -
$400.00 per load
After notice of a fee being assessed is given,
failure to pay in a timely manner it may be deemed a
theft of services and will be referred to Valley County

Not All Heroes Wear Uniforms

A couple weeks ago, my classmate from the
U.S. Naval Academy was relieved from his job as
commanding officer of the aircraft carrier USS Teddy
Roosevelt (CVN-71). His crime? He notified his
superiors of a desperate Coronavirus situation aboard
the Roosevelt, and he requested immediate help in
getting sailors off the ship. The communication was
leaked to the media. My classmate was fired.
Now, there isn’t enough room here to write about
the Ethics of this case study, but it will surely be taught
for years in Naval Leadership courses at Annapolis.
The operative question will center on the concept of
Duty. Further…what is your ‘duty’ during peacetime
and what is it during wartime.
This week we are sending 2300 primary ballots
out to Montanans who are overseas or serving in the
military. This kicks off the official voting for our June
2nd primary, as we give our military voters a little
extra time to return their ballots. Many of Montana’s
sailors, soldiers, airmen and marines serve in places
you couldn’t find on a map.
Is America at peace or war?
I think we are at war with a deadly virus. Citizens
in uniform, during wartime, are often required to place
their duty ahead of their own safety. What’s different
about this battle, though, is this war is being fought
in every town, city, state and country of the world.
And the uniformed heroes aren’t just military. They’re
everyday uniformed employees in medical, restaurant,
food processing, automotive, law enforcement,
prisons, industrial, mail delivery, and so on.
In the blink of an eye, uniformed jobs which
have been generally safe and predictable, have become
anything but.
So if you’re one those people or businesses that
show up every day, donning a uniform and putting
your duty first, thank you from all of us who benefit
from your courage and commitment.
Not all heroes wear uniforms. But if you wear a
uniform, you are a hero.

While everyone is being asked to avoid mass gatherings, it’s very important to
note that blood drives are not considered “mass gatherings.” Blood drives are
controlled events with trained staff and appropriate safety measures to protect
donors and recipients. Like a hospital, grocery store, or pharmacy, a blood drive

It is possible to practice social distancing and donate blood. In fact, the U.S.
surgeon general has said, “You can still go out and give blood. We’re worried

Spring Will Soon Arrive

These are the times that try our souls. Isolation, face
masks, drugs and diseases that are difficult to pronounce,
let alone understand.
Take heart. There’s a world out there that proceeds
without us. A place where winter stubbornly exits stage
left, while spring occasionally lifts its head but seems too
shy to take command. A place of beauty we should try to
visit.
As the calendar approaches May, red-winged
blackbirds and Western meadowlarks are staking out
their breeding and nesting areas. Sandhill cranes stand
silhouetted on prairie hilltops like a weathervane on a
barn.
Mature bull elk have started to regrow their massive
headgear, and by early May, female pronghorn will start to
calve their young. Montana’s members of the deer family –
elk, mule deer and white-tailed deer – generally don’t have
their young until early June.
Bears, both black and grizzly, have started to venture from
their winter dens while ground squirrels, also known as
gophers, have been running around above ground for a
couple of months or more.
Already a snake or two has emerged from its hibernaculum,
soaking up solar heat on a rock ledge. And warmer, wetter
nights will soon bring out a chorus of boreal frogs.
Boreal frogs are heard everywhere in the spring and
early summer. During their April-June breeding season
their loud, short chirp that resembles the slow running of a
thumb over the teeth of a comb, seems to come from every
prairie pond and water-filled roadside ditch.
By midsummer, the inch-long boreal frogs disappear
underground, beneath vegetation, into water tanks, or
even on building foundations, anywhere they can keep
their skin moist.
In rivers and streams, wild rainbow trout are
spawning. The peak often occurs from mid-April to late
April, in rivers and streams with gravel bottoms. Those
requirements are important for a couple of reasons.
First, flowing water provides oxygen, which keeps the
eggs alive.
Second, gravel helps protect eggs from predators and
keeps them alive — a silt bottom could smother and kill
the eggs.
As daylight lengthens and water temperature warms,
at least into the mid-40’s, a female rainbow will clear a
slight depression, called a redd, in gravel. She does that
by turning on her side and beating her tail up and down.
Then she deposits 2,000 to 3,000 eggs in the redd. When
she’s done, she will dig at the upstream edge of the nest,
covering the eggs with gravel.
As she releases her eggs, a male rainbow will move
alongside her and release his milt over the eggs, fertilizing
them.
And that’s it. The pair swim away and let nature take
its course. In a month or two the eggs will hatch. Pretty
simple, really.
Rainbow trout in lakes and reservoirs are also looking
for a suitable tributary with flowing water and a gravel
bottom. That’s why right now they are slowly swimming
along the shorelines, searching.
However, most reservoirs in north central Montana
lack suitable spawning tributaries for a self-sustaining
rainbow population. As a result, they are stocked from the
state’s hatcheries.
T hat’s not a secret to the men and women who know
where and when to go fishing for them.
If being stuck in the house, isolated, is gnawing, then
perhaps a day spent bird watching, or fishing will lift the
spirits.
Nature and wild things may not need us, but right
now we sure need them.
